Kaba Australia’s
Open Day
To celebrate our 150th birthday, Kaba Australia opened its
doors nationwide to share a BBQ, some product specials,
and a laugh with our valuable dealer network.
NSW
Although the weather wasn’t particularly kind to us, our dealers
were, showing up in droves to wish us well, check out our new
premises and show room, and eat from our all day BBQ.
They also got an extra surprise, with our accordion player
providing traditional polka music throughout the day.
As reward for their visit, not only did we supply a constant supply
of barbequed goodies but also the opportunity to experiment
with all of our products, including our Detex range of exit devices
and popular E-Flash range.

With Queensland being such a large state, we were pleasantly
surprised with our customer’s willingness to travel far and wide to
come and celebrate our 150th anniversary with us.
It was a great day, with dealers able to interact with our products
and join us for a bite to eat and general catch up.

The Kaba Open Day gave our dealers in Victoria
the opportunity not only to visit the office and
sample our products, but also catch up with our
new team members, with Stan Redfern recently
commencing with Kaba Australia and David Hyams
being promoted to Victoria and Tasmania State
Manager.
Our South Australia dealer network showed up
on mass and were greeted with some fabulous
local catering within the South Australian office.
Along with the tasty treats, there were plenty of
products to play with, with our c-lever and E-Plex
products proving popular.
WA
Being a large state, we were overwhelmed by our dealer’s ability to
travel vast distances to come and visit us and help celebrate our
150th anniversary. We had a great day and enjoyed the opportunity
to welcome our customers into our offices, give them some food and
drink, and show them our entire range of products.

Positioned overlooking the Pacific Ocean,
WIN Stadium in Wollongong NSW is a
multi-purpose facility with the ability to host
a variety of sporting and special events,
including rugby league, rugby union and
soccer. Win Stadium is also the Wollongong
home ground for the St George Illawarra
Dragons who are part of the National Rugby
League.
2012 has seen WIN Stadium undertake a major
refurbishment with the building of the new Western
Grandstand and the renovation of the Southern
Grandstand with new corporate, player and retail
catering facilities. These changes saw the removal
of the stadium’s 50 year old grandstand and the
installation of a more modern two-tiered stand,
boosting the venue capacity to 23,000 with
approximately 13,000 seats being undercover.
In addition to an increased seating capacity,
WIN Stadium now boasts improved patron facilities
(such as toilets, box offices, and food & beverage
areas), 4 leased areas to be used as shops/eateries,
Page 8
2 new function rooms for game days and conferencing
events, 21 new corporate suites, and new media and
player training facilities. As part of this improvement
2 new patron entry points were built, with the venue’s
access system supplied by Kaba Australia Entrance
Control.
Kaba Australia Entrance Control was the natural
choice for WIN stadium as Kaba products were already
successfully being used in the 2 existing entry points
and Kaba entrance control systems are compatible
with Ticketek tickets, allowing automatic entry to the
stadium.
The 2 new entry points were fitted with 4 motorised
turnstiles and 1 disability access gate each, with
each unit fitted with scanner housings featuring
2 dimensional barcode scanning and full graphic
displays.
As well as providing the systems to produce 2 new
entry points, Kaba Australia also upgraded the
existing, seaside entry point with a new scanner
housing, also featuring 2 dimensional barcode
scanning and full graphic display, to match the other
entry points.

Interview with Carl Dean,
National Sales Manager, Detex Corporation
Kaba Australia has recently entered into a strategic agreement with Detex
Corporation to become the Australian distributor of Detex Life Safety and
Security Door Hardware products.
Detex Corporation has been
servicing the US market since
the 1870’s and today produces a
wide range of products centred
around protecting people and
securing property.
With Carl coming back out to
Australia this month for a
whirlwind visit, including
Security 2012, we recently sat
down with him to learn a little
more about Detex Corporation
and their impressive range of
products.
Q. Tell us a little about the Detex
range of products available here
in Australia?
Detex has several categories of
products. Loss prevention,
including the ECL series of pani
paddle dead bolts and battery
operated door monitor alarms.
Next there is the Value Series,
which are performance based
panic devices with several models
applied in loss prevention in retail
and industrial secondary exits.
These are available with most of
the alarm and electric control of
the Advantex institutional grade
exits. Lastly, there is the Advantex
premium exit device series, the
industry proven panic device with
high use, high abuse tolerant
performance.
Detex also provides Easy Kits to
the industry. More than a product;
Easy Kits are complete one source
systems. While each kit is based
on one or more Detex products
Q.Detex is an American brand,
how long have you been in
operation?
Detex started as a manufacturer
of Guard Watchclocks in 1923.
Manufacturing was located in
Chicago Illinos and the main
office was in New York, New York.
In 1981 Detex combined its
operations to its current facility in
New Braunfels, Texas.
New Braunfels is in the center of
Texas, close to San Antonio.
Q. Could you give us a little
history lesson on the Detex
brand and its products?
Detex has its origins in a
predecessor company established
in 1878 by Abraham A. Newman to
manufacture and sell stationary
watchclocks. This was a period
before watchclocks of the portable
type had gained wide usage.
Through the Newman name, Detex
has observed over 130 years of
involvement in the watchclock
industry and proudly continues the
name for two of its products.
Mr. Newman was more than a
salesman. He was attentive to his
customers’ suggestions – and he
was inventive. In all, he received
more than 30 patents in the United
States, most of them related to
watchclocks.
In 1906, Newman incorporated the
Newman Clock Company and then
sold it to Charles E. Renshaw, who
subsequently changed to the name
to “Detex Corporation”.
The term “Detex,” believed coined
by Philip H. Haselton, Sr., was
suggested by a watchclock’s
detector feature, which marks the
Page 11
recording chart automatically
when the cover of the clock is
tampered with or opened.
The corporate name was soon
amended to “Detex Watchclock
Corporation” to highlight the
company’s product offerings.
Detex remained principally a
manufacturer and distributor of
Watchman’s Clock Systems until
1963, when it first introduced a
new line of security hardware
products and entered the builders’
hardware field. These products are
designed primarily for use in the
control of exits and entries in
industrial, commercial, institutional
and educational buildings for the
purposes of loss prevention and
security. As a result of this
broadening of interests, the word
“Watchclock” was removed from
the company name in 1964, and
“Detex Corporation” was once
again the corporate designation.
In 1981, Detex consolidated its
Chicago headquarters and
manufacturing operation, and its
New York City financial operation,
under one roof in New Braunfels,
Texas. Detex continued diversifying
its product lines and in 1997
introduced the Advantex high-end
exit device line. Designed for
high-use and high abuse
environments, Advantex changed
the panic hardware marketplace
with its patented, template-free
installation features, PVD finishes,
heavy-duty angled end cap, new
architectural styling, grade 1 fire
and hurricane ratings, and broad
electrified options offerings.
In 2001, the Value Series product
line was introduced offering the
same superior functionality,
installation benefits, fine styling
and ruggedness of Advantex to the
core alarmed loss prevention
market segments Detex has
served. Now, Detex offers more
electrified options for Value Series
Page 12
than any other product in its class.
Innovations have continued and
will continue into the future.
EasyKits – preconfigured,
integrated door security systems,
additions to the Advantex and
Values Series lines, new families
of exit alarms, upgrades and
enhancements to the worldrenown loss prevention products
continue and more will come.
Q. What applications do you see
your range of products being
most suited to?
The Detex Loss prevention
products, ECL230, EAX 500, and
Value Series V40EB are mainstay
products designed to secure
secondary life safety exits in retail
and casual dining facilities. The
EAX 3500 was designed to provide
a secure exit alarm capabilities
while incorporating a timed
override feature to allow the same
opening to be used for deliveries.
From the ground up it was
designed by customers in the
dining markets.
The exit device line, both the
stainless steel performance based
Advantex series as well as its
sibling, Value Series each offer the
rugged simple design for long life.
Each have the patented strike
locator system, totally eliminating
paper templates for installation.
Each offers the most complete
line of electrical options. Each
encompasses a rugged abuse
resistant endcap, the weak point
in most exit device designs.
Q. What do you think are the
benefits of Detex products over
the competition?
Detex can be summed up in two
words: products and service. The
products are the right products for
our customers. Tough and long
lasting. Being designed based on
true user feedback, Detex products
are the easiest to install and
require very low maintenance. With
the “family” atmosphere of a small
company that Detex provides;
everyone truly is in “customer
service”. Detex has the undisputed
top level customer service in the
mechanical and electromechanical
exit device market place. The proof
is at the other end of the phone. If
you call to place or check an order,
you get a knowledgeable LIVE
person. If you call with a technical
question, you get a knowledgeable
LIVE person.
Q. You have entered into a
strategic partnership with Kaba
Australia for distribution. What
was it about Kaba Australia that
appealed to your distribution
strategy?
Detex has had a long relationship
wth Kaba in North America in both
the hospitality division (Saflok) and
the institutional Access Control
divisions. One of Detex’s earliest
EasyKits was a one package panic
device fitted onto the correct
KABA eplex access control lever
lock. Customers wanted to make
one call and get a compatible
rugged access control combined
with a rugged (and good looking)
panic exit device.
Other manufacturers would supply
one part but require the end user
to figure out which product was
compatible and secure on their
own. If there was a conflict the
problem was the end user. KABA
and Detex both put the kit together
and the “kit” could be ordered
complete from either company. If
there is an issue one call gets the
right person for all the pieces.

We asked Alan to share some insights into the Queensland Team.
This is what he had to say:
Q. How long have you and your
team been with Kaba?
believe our front door will one day
run our homes and buildings.
Most of us have been with Kaba 10
years or more.
Q. Now spill the beans on the
rest of the Queensland team,
what do we all need to know?
Q. What is the best thing about
working in a small team away
from the main office and what is
the biggest challenge?
As most of the team is on the road
and with, most times, only two in
the office we get a better
understanding of the products
Kaba makes and their diversity.
We all have to know the main
features of our products, be the
first point of contact, and once a
contact is made refer it to the
appropriate person. Basically we
need to have a broad knowledge
of Kaba.
We get to discuss changes to
standards and building codes.
This sometimes leads to robust
discussions on the interpretation
of standards, leading to a better
understanding to the changes and
why the authorities made them.
Q. Tell us a little about yourself.
What do you like to do when not
working for Kaba.
I am a product of the construction
industry having worked in all
facets of the industry from pick
and shovel to design and
construct.
Having worked in third world
countries for 18 years, I am very
interested in ancient construction
methods and the quality of trades
in the past which have now
disappeared. I like innovation and
The boys are a diverse lot.
Paul has two daughters who twist
him around their little fingers (If I
only had that power). He makes a
point of knowing the ins and outs
of our products, also that of our
competitors. Paul conducts a lot
of our training.
Bob runs the office and is the only
permanent fixture as the rest of
us are on the road at one time or
another. He has a diverse
knowledge of our products and
can point most of our customers
in the right direction. He is very
customer oriented.
Robert is the youngest male in the
team and brings a gen Y
perspective to our marketing
(I know that is terrifying!). He is a
great problem solver and has
great technical knowledge.
Tom looks after the locksmiths
and spends his time trying to find
the perfect chicken sandwich. He
has had food poisoning more
times than I can remember.
Ray is access control, has found
out about bikes and is trying to fit
an X09 to his to prevent its theft.
David calls on architects,
developers and builders. He is
always cheerful & happy (we are
working on changing that).
Q. What are the challenges
facing the industry in Queensland
and Northern Territory at the
moment and do you think that
these challenges translate
Australia wide?
The GFC is going to be our
greatest challenge with
construction declining. Service,
innovation and communication will
be of most importance. Never
allowing our problems to become
our customer’s problem is
paramount. This I see as a national
issue and we all need to look
outside the box on how to increase
our market. We need to ask the
question, ‘where else can our
products be used that they are not
being used now?’
Q. With Kaba celebrating its
150th anniversary this year, what
is the one thing you wished all of
our customers knew about us
here in Australia?
We are a problem solving group,
with a diverse range of access
control products which will fit
their situations. Just call us.
We were not responsible for
the weather.
That was our competitors.
Q. Anything else you would like
to share with us?
Always grab the moment as old
age is not for wimps. When an
opportunity presents itself, grab it
with both hands.
