Vol.33 No.9 - June 2015 A final word from Ms. O Connor

Vol.33 No.9 - June 2015
A final word from Ms. O Connor
Here we are at the end of another wonderful chapter in the St. Oliver Plunkett story. I would like to
take this opportunity to thank our amazing staff for all of the hard work, care and dedication they
have shown to the children this year. They are playing a huge part in making memories for these
children and hopefully shaping our decision makers of the future. Thank you to our wonderful Parents
Association, who have never been as busy as you have been this year, your hard work in organising
the bunanza, garden fete, concert tickets, swap shop, communion and confirmation parties, book
covering, the endless cutting and laminating, first aid, field trips, fruity Friday, healthy eating, stage
building, runs in the park and the green team. Thank you to those of you that worked directly with
the children in the classrooms, your input has really added to the educational experience of our
students. A special thanks to Leone and Ciara, our chairperson and wingman. Please accept our
heartfelt thanks for your invaluable support, cooperation and for trusting us with your most precious
possessions. To the children. You have had a wonderful year, and have come in with a smile everyday.
Have a lovely holiday. Keep safe and come back rested and ready for another great year. Sadly we
must say goodbye to our wonderful sixth classes. It has been a pleasure and a privilege getting to
know you over the past eight years and we are confident that you will be amazing ambassadors
for Ollies as you move to your new schools. Our long association with many families ends also as
many of our sixth class students are the youngest in their families. Thank you to you the parents for
entrusting us with your children, and for the wonderful support and cooperation over the years.

Lollipop Lady
Our wonderful lollipop lady Anne
Magill will be retiring on 30th June
after 12years of being a warden at
the school gates. Anne, thank you
for all your patience and dedication. I’m sure
Margaret will miss and so will we. Anne asked
us to include the following:
Dear Parents/children,
I wish to let you know that I am retiring on 30th June
as school warden. I would like to give my heartfelt
thanks, mainly to all the children but also the parents,
teachers and staff for your kindness and generosity
to me over the past twelve years I have been at the
school gates. It was a pleasure to cross such mannerly
and enthusiastic children every day. It did not seem
like work at all, to see such smiles all the time. I have
enjoyed my time immensely. Go raibh mile maith

Mile Run
On Thursday 4th June children from third to sixth
class completed the fourth run a mile challenge. It
was a great day for the event which was officiated by
Pat Hooper who represented Ireland in the marathon
at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Despite the difficult
windy conditions the children all competed well
and a huge amount improved their time from the
September challenge! Massive thanks to the parents
who helped to make it such a seem less affair.
School Tours
On May 27th Senior Infants went to Imaginosity
for their school tour. It was their first time taking the
bus! It was so much fun and they learned so much
from all the great interactive games and activities.
They can’t wait for their next adventure!
Sailing on the Estuary—PC8
In June our class went sailing on the estuary. We left
at nine oclock and walked down. When we arrived we
got into our wet suits. We started off by playing warmup games on the grassThen we were put into groups
and assigned to our yachts. We were very excited!
There were four yachts, one JY, one Topaz and two
Omegas. There was one instructor to each yacht. The
main instructor was past pupil Colm Mc Caffery. We
all helped with the rigging of the yachts which was
great fun as it was very windy, which made it a little
more difficult. Then we all set sail. It was brillant!
We were going very fast. Two yachts capsized which
was great fun. We all managed to get back into the
yacht with the help of our instructor and the life
boat. We learned about the gib, the boom, tacking,
the trapeze and steering with the tiller extension. We had hot soup in the clubhouse for lunch and played
more games and then headed back out for fun games in
the yachts. We were divided into two teams and had to
jump into the sea to collect balls and throw them into
a basket on the life boat. It was a bit cold in the water
but we hardly noticed we were having so much fun. We returned to the clubhouse for hot showers, hot
chocolate and biscuits. It was the best tour ever!

Cycle to Malahide Castle - Green School Committee Last October sixth class children completed
a six week cycle training and safety course as
part of our green school programme. On June
the 11th they put those skills into practise and
cycled from the school to Malahide Castle. Once
inside the castle they cycled two loops of the
castle and then back to school. Classes cycled
in relays with their class teacher and parents.
Mr Stephen Mac Donagh came back to lead the
cycle and to instruct the children on the rules of
cycling in large numbers prior to the cycle. As
with previous years , it was a beautiful sunny
FRIENDS for Life
The 12 week ‘FRIENDS for Life’ programme
wasundertaken by Mr Morton’s and Ms Rooney’s
fifth classes this year. (The younger programme ‘Fun
Friends’ was carried out in a Sen Infant class.)
The fifth class children were asked to write a piece
telling people all about this programme and how it has
helped them in their lives. One piece was chosen to be
printed in the school news. The winning piece was
written by Lydia Costello in Mr Morton’s class. Lydia
was chosen because of her excellent participation
during the programme, both during the FRIENDS
sessions in school and for the home activities. She
was also chosen because of her super piece of writing
which you are about to read. Well done Lydia. Well
done also to Jamie Burke in Ms Rooney’s class
who wrote an excellent piece of writing about his
experience of FRIENDS for Life.
FRIENDS for Life by Lydia Costello.
FRIENDS for Life is a programme written by Dr.
Paula Barrett. She explains that this programme
helps many different people to learn positive skills to
deal with numerous situations that you will deal with
day and it was great to see the cyclists leave
the school in their hi-vis jackets and cycle
in a controlled and orderly way to the castle.
Hopefully children will continue to cycle over
the years and help reduce CO2 emissions ! Well
done everyone and safe cycling! Many thanks
to the parents association for their continued
support of green
school activities

now and in the future.
Our class (Mr Morton 5th) and Ms Rooney were the
first people to experience this project in our school.
We started at 1pm every Tuesday and finished at 2:25
pm. Ms Curry and Ms Delaney were the two teachers
who started the programme. Without them I don’t
think the project would have succeeded at all! So I’d
like to thank the two ladies for all their hard work. I
hope that this programme will go on to the next fifth
classes, as I found it very useful.
Here is what the FRIENDS symbol represents:
F = Feelings
You can recognise when you are worried about
something when you have butterflies in your
stomach, your heart is beating fast and your palms
are sweating. This means you
should calm down.
R = Remember to relax.
Have quiet time. I can practise
some of my relaxation games,
like the sports relaxation game
or the face muscles game.

Fireman Visit
Ms Leahy’s junior infants were so lucky to have a
visit from the Fire Brigade, during their visit they
received an emergency call out and off they went
leaving the children wondering what happened!
Luckily Lauren’s Dad knew how disappointed they
would be so they came back to a very excited and
grateful class.
Cricket
All hail the Leinster champions!
Earlier this month, the boys’ cricket team were
crowned champions of all of Leinster, lifting the
Leprechaun Cup for the first time. We played against
St. Matthew’s of Sandymount in the final which
took place in Malahide Castle on Friday 5th June. At
first we were just happy to get to play because the
rain was so heavy in the morning it looked like the
match would be cancelled. Luckily at 10.20am, just
ten minutes before the final was due to start, the rain
stopped and the sun came out. Our captain, SJ de
Klerk won the toss and he decided that we would bat
first. We didn’t get off to the best start but then SJ
and Binyam Keegan managed to get 36 and 37 runs
each! That set us on our way and we ended up with
118 runs. St. Matthew’s needed to score 119 to win
but our wonderful bowling meant that their task was
very difficult. Finn Daly-Dolan got three wickets and
Wilhelm de Klerk and Jack Grant got two wickets
each. St. Matthew’s were all out for 57 runs. Andy
Balbirnie from the Ireland team presented our medals!
It was a long journey to get to the final and the whole
squad played an important
part along the way. We
would like to thank Mr
Lynch for coaching us,
Ms O’Connor and all our
teachers for allowing us to
play the matches during
school time and Ilse de
Klerk and all the parents
who came to support us
along the way. Our trophy
is on display in the cabinet
in the main building –
have a look at it the next
time you are passing.

Basketball
Another great year for Ollies basketball teams! We
are very proud of both our league teams and our
tournament teams. We entered a new league this
year. with 36 girls teams and 28 boys. Our girls won
their section and went on to play in the A final, while
the boys were runners up in their section and played
in the B final. We enjoyed a great day out in the
National Basketball Arena in February, when along
with our fantastic supporters, we experienced two
victories! Delighted players, coaches and supporters
came back to Ollies in triumph! We also took part
in 3 tournaments. The boys team were first to play,
on June 4th, and had mixed fortunes. The 5th class
girls were playing on June 5th, and were runners
up in their section. They got into the pay-offs, but
were narrowly defeated by St Olaf’s. Our 6th class
team played in a very competitive section and
qualified for the final. They played their hearts out,
but ended up just one point behind when the final
whistle blew. 7 Ollies girls played on a club team in
a regional competition held in Kerry over the Easter
holidays. They played really well and improved with
every match, eventually winning a lovely trophy.
Yet more honours were in store when 3 Ollies players,
Isabelle Oppermann, Dearbhla Reid and Mia Symes
were picked to play for Dublin in a competition
held recently in Belfast. We were very excited when
Isabelle was picked for the All-Star team along with
one of last years players, Vicky Young. The whole
basketball community is excited and proud of the
girls. With such large numbers of children wanting to
play basketball, we needed more than one coach. Ms
Leahy is very appreciative of the help and assistance
given by Carol Oppermann, Louise Young and Eric
Westphal who volunteered to help out each week,
training and coaching the players. Thank you also to
all the parents and minders who gave lifts to matches
and who supported us in any way.
Girls 6th class Basketball Tournament
On Tuesday June 9th, the 6th class members of
our girls’ basketball team went to the National
Basketball Arena to play in a tournament.
We played well and won our section comfortably.
We then had to play the final against a team from
Hollypark. It was a well contested final and the
teams were well matched. It was basket for basket
and unfortunately, when the final whistle went we
were just one point behind. We were presented with
a lovely glass trophy after the game to mark our
success. We really enjoyed the whole day and would
like to thank Ms Leahy or organising the team during
the year and Carol Oppermann who coached us. 5th class girls basketball tournament
– Ella Johnston & Aoife Mitchell.
St Oliver Plunkett’s Girls Basketball Team played
in a one-day tournament in The National Basketball
Arena in Tallaght, on Friday the 5th of June. Erica
Egan, Louise Mulcahy, Ella Johnston, Aoife Mitchell,
Ellie-May Delaney, Laura Burke, Saoirse Mayes,
Nicci Luijkx, Amy Farrell and Heather Mulcahy
played very well in all of our games. Ms Leahy and
her assistant coach Deirdre Delaney came with us to
the tournament. We played five games; we won three
and lost two. Our final game was against St. Olaf’s
in the second place playoff. We spent the whole day
in the Arena in Tallaght. Everyone played really well
and all of us had a great time!!!
Boys basketball tournament In early June we went to the National Basketball Arena
to play in a tournament. We played 4 matches in one
day. We had mixed fortunes and were unfortunate not
to make the final. While we didn’t come back with
any trophies we had a great day and really enjoyed
ourselves. We would like to thank Ms Leahy for
organising the
tournament
and
Ms
Brennan who
coached us on
the day.

Girls Soccer
The girls play in Divsion 1 and had a great
campaign this year. We had to play 6 teams in the
league stage of the competition. We won five and
drew one with Lusk to finish top of our league.
This set up a semi-final with Southside runners
up, Scoil Aine Naofa from Lucan. Normal and
extra time couldn’t separate us and we finished
2-2. We held our nerve and keeper Aoife Mc
Loughney pulled off two fine saves to see us
through to the final with Taney Girls. Taney had
knocked us out of the cup earlier in the year on a
comprehensive score line, but we were confident
that we had improved greatly and gelled well as a
team throughout the season.
Katie O’ Sullivan got us off to a flying start and
she and Ericka Egan added two fine goals. Taney
however and in particular their no. 7 found their
goal-scoring touch and they managed to reel us
back in. Again, extra time couldn’t separate us
and disappointingly we came out the wrong side
of the penalty shoot out this time. Thanks to all the
supporters who cheered us on, and thanks to all
the mums and dads who provided the lifts during
the year without whom it would be impossible to
field a team.
Boys Soccer
- Don Flynn & Darragh Timmons
It was a very successful season for the boys football
team. They went through the whole league season
undefeated playing 6 games. The highlight of the
league season was the last game against Colmcilles
in the Castle. Colmcilles went ahead with an early
penalty but the the lads dug in hard an Finn Daly
Dolan found the net from close range. Then with
minutes left Darragh Timmons lofted the ball over the
top of the defence and Jed Tormey popped up with
a calm finish. The boys had won the Fingal League.
The team also entered the Dublin Senior Cup. The
first few rounds we played in the Cup we passed
with ease. The boys made it to the final of the Cup.
The Cup final was in Finglas and we were playing
St. John Boscos from Navan Road. The pitch was
in fabulous condition and many supporters came to
see the match. They went ahead with one off-side
goal and another dodgey goal. The boys upped their
game in the second half and Brendan Crean scored
a cracker which put us only one goal behind. With
minutes to go the two managers put the tall centrehalf (Darragh Timmons) up top. We created a lot of
chances and Darragh scored a deflected goal but the
ref dis-allowed the goal even though the lines-woman
said it was over the line. Then the ref blew his whistle
and the game was over. The players were gutted and
heartbroken about the controversial decision made
by the ref. Over all it was a great season for the boys
football and one they’ll never forget.
