America purchased the Louisiana territory for about $15 million dollars once Napoleon suddenly decided to sell it, and would be known as the most magnificent real estate bargain in history. Jefferson was once again skeptical of the purchase as there was nothing within the Constitution regarding a situation such as this one, but he followed through with the purchase. When Congress met, the new naturalization law was enacted which lowered the required residency time from 14 to 5 years. The only prop of the Hamiltonian system Jefferson removed was the excise tax, everything else was let in tact. 4)What was Judiciary Act of 1801? Who was the Chief Justice? The Judiciary Act of 1801 was one of the last important laws passed by the expiring Federalist Congress.
