declare war, and this harmed the Federalists, but they continued to harass Jefferson (Marbury V
Madison).

5)What is judicial review and how was it established?
KEY The Tripolitan War lasted four years, and at the beginning Jefferson
was reluctant to send troops but it was inevitable. After the four years a
peace treaty was established between Tripoli and America.
America purchased the Louisiana territory for about $15 million dollars once Napoleon suddenly decided to sell it,
and would be known as the most magnificent real estate bargain in history. Jefferson was once again skeptical of the
purchase as there was nothing within the Constitution regarding a situation such as this one, but he
followed through with the purchase.

Confederation and the US Constitution!
1)What were some of Jefferson’s presidential goals? What did his
election in 1800 become known as according to the text?
Jefferson refers to his election as a revolution, which came to be
known as the Revolution of 1800, and was determined to restore the
republican experiment and stop the decay of virtue that had been
established by Federalists.
2)What did Jefferson’s inauguration mark and what happened for the
first time?
Jefferson's inaugural address was a classic statement of democratic
principles, and his triumph marked the first party overturn in
American history.
3)What changed and what remained the same when congress met?
When Congress met, the new naturalization law was enacted which
lowered the required residency time from 14 to 5 years. The only
prop of the Hamiltonian system Jefferson removed was the excise
tax, everything else was let in tact.
4)What was Judiciary Act of 1801? Who was the Chief Justice?
The Judiciary Act of 1801 was one of the last important laws passed
by the expiring Federalist Congress. Chief Justice John Marshall had
been appointed by Adams and remained in the Supreme Court.
5)What is judicial review and how was it established?
The case of Marbury v. Madison established the concept of "judicial
review".

MYSTERY?
Jefferson became the leader of the Republican
Party, Hamilton of the Federalist. Jefferson was
elected vice president in 1796 and served under
President John Adams, a Federalist. Under Adams,
Federalist judges began to use the Alien and
Sedition Acts to stifle Republican support for
France in its war against Britain.
