I’m interested in doing the Heart Health 5K Fun Run/Walk, how do I prepare for something like that? Participating in 5K events can be very rewarding and FUN exercise, but it can also be daunting to know where to start if you’ve never done one before. Follow these simple tricks to get you from couch to 5K! 1. Start slow and work your way up! There is no need to try all 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) your very first time walking or running. Start training a few months before. Begin with a half mile distance and then gradually increase by half-mile increments every 1-2 weeks until you reach the goal of 3.1 miles total. 2. Try interval training! Break up the longer distances by switching up your speeds to keep it fresh as you build endurance. Include walking, power walking, jogging and running. As long as you are moving consistently you’re doing a great job preparing your body for the 5K. 3. Grab a friend! Running or walking with a friend or a family member can make the time and distance seem like nothing at all. Keeping each other company and cheering each other on not only motivates you to go farther or faster but also is a great way to bond!!
