To inspire philanthropy and be a catalyst for strengthening communities throughout Monterey County Vision Healthy, Safe, Vibrant Communities annual report 2012 Cover: top left, Return of the Natives; top right, Alzheimer’s Association; bottom, El Sistema USA/Salinas (YOSAL) MESSAGE to the Community from the Chair and President/CEO We are very pleased to present the 2012 Annual Report for the Community Foundation for Monterey County (CFMC). 2012 was a year of many accomplishments and new levels of achievement. As you’ll read, we surpassed significant historical benchmarks ($100 million of cumulative granting), ended the year with our highest asset total ever ($155 million), granted more than $9 million, received $15 million in gifts, achieved a 13.9% investment return on our portfolio, rolled out the Community Impact grant program and launched the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (and much more). And, we did so while adhering to our core values. What are those values? We think they’re best summed up in our mission statement: “To inspire philanthropy and be a catalyst for strengthening communities throughout Monterey County.” In order to strive for such a high level of accomplishment, an organization must have a board of —Dan Baldwin, President/CEO directors and staff that are committed to the mission, and work well together. Such is the case at the CFMC. This is best exemplified through all-important committee work. “...doing the work well —creating impact— will inspire others to join in.” 2012 saw the formation of new grant committees, chaired by board members who worked closely with our program officers to implement the Community Impact grants program. These committees met several times and deliberated on scores of applications. The grants and program committee then became the oversight group that looks at all our grant programs and policies. The investment committee, working with staff and our investment consultant, revised the Investment Policy Statement. The finance committee, while overseeing the CFMC’s operating budget, worked with the director of finance to establish a cash reserve policy. The resource development committee guided the introduction of charitable gift annuities into our philanthropic portfolio. The nominating committee transitioned into the governance committee, not only 1 2012 Board Chair, Craig L. Johnson and President/CEO, Dan Baldwin leading the critical work of nominating, but also reviewing by-laws and other governance related subjects. This is only a partial list that describes the remarkably dynamic work that is occurring at your community foundation. We believe impact attracts resources. Whether the impact is demonstrated through stewardship of invested assets, adhering to donor intent, committees that help guide effective grantmaking, training the next generation of nonprofit leaders through the Center For Nonprofit Excellence or working with a donor advisor to make solid grants within their area of interest, doing the work well – creating impact – will inspire others to join in. Craig L. Johnson Board Chair 2012 Daniel R. Baldwin President/CEO Community Foundation for Monterey County Circle of Philanthropy It all begins with giving. As a direct result of the generosity of individuals and families who create charitable funds in their lifetimes and through their estates, the CFMC celebrated a $100 million cumulative grantmaking milestone in 2012. Hundreds of local agencies were supported over the years and thousands of individuals have benefited from valuable programs and services. Philanthropy fuels the annual grantmaking – over $9 million last year alone – and augments resources for local nonprofits doing important work in the arts, environment, youth, health, human services, and more. The CFMC also strengthens these organizations through the offerings of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE). 2 Grants to these agencies create change in the lives of our neighbors. From a young girl receiving her first toothbrush, a student participating in a musical performance or residents learning to care for our environment, to a person healing through counseling, or a homebound senior receiving meals or a ride to the doctor, these grants make an impact. It’s our hope that by sharing some of these stories, you and others will be inspired to partner with us. 1945 established annualFoundation report 2012 to preserve historic buildings 1969 1st grant – $600 to Beacon House in Pacific Grove 1970 Focus turned to preserving open space 1981 Granted $18,000 PacRep Theatre’s production of Peter Pan (2007) Photo by Chris deFaria Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History Garden at California’s First Theatre Photo by David Laws Beacon House Casa Abrego The CFMC celebrated $100 million in historical grantmaking 1984 Granted $49,000; became Community Foundation for Monterey County Giving Inspiring Philanthropy Received $15.6 million in gifts The CFMC supports philanthropy in all its facets. Andy is not only the famous face of the Andy Boy label, but the Chairman of the Board of D’Arrigo Bros. Co. of California. Phyllis has been volunteer extraordinaire. They are also, in their own quiet way, leaders in philanthropy. “The Joy of a Healthy Life” captures the essence of their business, says the company website. The joy of giving, describes the feeling that emanates from the D’Arrigos when they talk about their philanthropy. “This valley has been very good to us. If you’re in a position to give back why then you do it. Leave a little seed for the next crop.” —Andy D’Arrigo Their values were instilled by their parents. “(It was just) the way we were raised,” said Andy. “My father, who was an immigrant, donated to Boys Town because it benefited young people like himself. Coming up at the tail end of the depression, (we) absorbed it naturally. It just stuck with you.” Phyllis concurs adding, “When you see someone in need you just want to help.” The D’Arrigos have also passed down the spirit of giving to their family. It was absorbed “at the dining room table. Just talking. Our way of living,” said Andy. Phyllis, Salinas Volunteer of the Year in 1978, took her girls to volunteer at the Girl Scouts and the Steinbeck House. The D’Arrigos received the 2006 Philanthropists of the Year award from Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and Development Executive’s Network (DEN) as well as the 2010 Hero Award from Natividad Medical Foundation. The Agricultural Leadership Council, founded by their son John D’Arrigo, was the 2013 recipient of the Hero award. Their daughter Margaret D’Arrigo-Martin is active with the Hartnell College Foundation, Impower and the CFMC’s Women’s Fund. “My parents have always inspired us to give. That’s how we were raised,” said John. The D’Arrigos believe strongly in supporting education and youth. “We appreciate the benefits that have been given to us. We like to offer others the opportunity to help themselves, especially children,” said Phyllis. They support the Kinship Center and Rancho Cielo, “to give them some hope and some inspiration.” One of the most rewarding things to them is seeing the impact of their generosity. “There was a baby in a special incubator (that they had funded at Natividad Medical foundation). “She weighed less than 2 lbs. She’s doing well and will be going home to her parents soon. You can’t help but feel good,” shared Andy. The D’Arrigos have also received lasting satisfaction from their philanthropy. Andy spearheaded a $1 million drive for the YMCA in 1974, and is still gratified by it, said Phyllis. The D’Arrigos have utilized their donor advised fund at the CFMC to support many local nonprofits with major grants. “The (CFMC) is very knowledgeable and has been very helpful. I don’t hesitate to call and ask advice. The funds we’ve invested have done well. It’s money well spent,” Andy remarked. 7 About giving back Andy notes, “You have to feel it. You can’t teach it. We’re not motivated by having our names out there but it hopefully acts as a catalyst for other people. Knowing you’ve done something for Salinas, knowing it’s a little better, that gives us great satisfaction.“ “It’s only right to give a helping hand.” — Phyllis D’Arrigo Community Foundation for Monterey County GRANTMAKING Record $9 Million Granted 2012 was a banner year for the CFMC’s grantmaking. More than $9 million in grants were awarded through the many funds established by charitably minded individuals, families and businesses in Monterey County. The benefits of this funding are far reaching, touching the lives of residents through programs and services offered by local nonprofits. The range of organizations supported can be seen in our full grants list. 8 The Community Impact framework was launched in 2012 as the CFMC’s largest grants program. It is made possible by a pool of more than 35 funds with unrestricted or broad interests. The CFMC established this new program to focus grantmaking on achieving measurable results within four major program areas guided by a countywide vision of “Healthy, Safe, Vibrant Communities.” Grant committees made up of 29 board and community representatives reviewed hundreds of proposals and recommended funding for 113 Community Impact projects totaling $3,305,000. Environment 6% Program Areas Community Development 14% Education 21% Basic Needs 23% Arts & Culture 15% Animal Welfare 3% annual report 2012 Historic Preservation 3% Health 15% The CFMC also offers other meaningful grant programs. Girls’ Health in Girls’ Hands, funded through the Women’s Fund with support from our foundation partners, is a ground-breaking girls’ leadership initiative organized in collaboration with six youth-serving organizations. With the Rudy E. Futer Fund for Human and Humane Needs, the CFMC is investing $1.5 million over three years to strengthen the region’s major safety net services. At the same time, the Neighborhood Grants Program continues to support grassroots community projects where a small grant makes a huge difference. And, the CFMC’s new Center for Nonprofit Excellence led the way in helping local nonprofit organizations become more efficient through coordination of resources and effective management practices. It has indeed been an extraordinary year for grantmaking – made possible through the many funds created by donors over the years. 2012 Grantees Awards Anthony Nicholas Narigi Memorial Baseball Awards Dr. William D. ALBA provides education and business opportunities for farmworkers and aspiring farmers to grow and sell crops grown on two organic farms. Francisco Lopez and family celebrate a bumper crop of strawberries Through its three main programs (small farm incubation, Programa Educativo Para Agricultores (PEPA) and ALBA Organics), ALBA provides education, training, mentoring, and access to markets in the tri-county area. Its training and support services are designed to help program participants achieve long-term business success and include organic crop production and planning, marketing, small business management, meeting compliance requirements and accessing land and financing. The grant is expected to support 150 farmers with their new businesses, which in turn will create additional jobs and allow new business owners to participate in ALBA’s programs. 113 grants totaling $3,305,000 Invest in developing healthy, safe and vibrant communities across Monterey County. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 30% of all landfill consists of organic material, material that could be composted and recycled back into usable energy. In 2011, the Governor signed AB 341 which requires businesses to achieve 75% waste diversion by 2020. The grant, through the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County, supported programs in Pajaro. 13 TOP is also working with the City of Monterey, Monterey City Disposal Service, Food Scrap Resource Recovery Coalition, Monterey Regional Waste Management District, the County of Monterey, restaurants and others to increase awareness and effectiveness of waste diversion. A grant was made for educational materials to help businesses comply with the new legislation. “In today’s economic climate, the City of Monterey would not be able to meet the recycling requirements and diversion goals of AB 341 as completely and efficiently without the expertise of The Offset Project.” —Ted Terrasas, Sustainability Coordinator, City of Monterey Community Foundation for Monterey County The Women’s Fund Endowment More than $700,000 raised towards $1.5 million goal The Women’s Fund Women are the central threads of our community. To that end, the CFMC is building a Women’s Fund endowment to ensure that there are permanent resources available to meet those changing needs. With an endowment, a percentage of the fund’s value is available to grant each year while the principal remains intact and is invested, ensuring a source of philanthropic resources for years to come. We invite you to partner with us. To learn more visit www.cfmco.org/ womensfund. The Women’s Fund is a catalyst for change, seeding ideas, leveraging resources and encouraging partnerships to achieve broad, lasting change for women and girls in Monterey County. annual report 2012 annual report 2012 Research shows that investing in women and girls now creates a better future for us all. The Women’s Fund of Monterey County brings people together, identifies community priorities, funds solutions, and invests time and talent to generate change. Together, we are transforming the lives of women and girls and creating lasting impact on the communities in which they live. In the last five years, more than $315,000 has been granted to organizations serving women and girls in Monterey County. From the beginning, the Women’s Fund has seeded ideas and endeavors that would not have occurred without its support. Most recently, The Lives of Women & Girls Status Report, commissioned by the Women’s Fund in 2011, pointed to two areas where philanthropic leadership is needed: advancing economic security for women and supporting the future of girls. To increase women’s economic opportunities, grants have helped women start their own businesses, pursue their educational and career goals, and transition to self-sufficiency when in crisis. In addition to grants that advance women’s economic self-sufficiency, the Women’s Fund launched the three-year Girls’ Health in Girls’ Hands collaborative and granted $95,000 to six partner organizations (see page 15). In our first year, the initiative leveraged $160,000 in additional co-investment support from GHGH funding partners: the Claire Giannini Fund, Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Monterey Peninsula Foundation and Women’s Fund donors. We thank all our partners for their support. With support from Women’s Fund donors and our funding partners (see page 14), a multiagency collaborative was formed early in 2012 to work together over the next three years (and beyond) to actualize the girls’ vision established in a 2009 action research project. Sharing friendship bracelets at the November 2012 GHGH summit “GHGH is making a positive difference for hundreds of girls, all the organizations involved and ultimately the community. The success of the initiative is a testament to the power of relationships. Feedback from the girls and the nonprofits involved has been extremely positive and the movement for girls’ health will only grow stronger in the years to come. Richard Green program so much. To survive and thrive, nonprofits must adapt and in many cases rethink their business models. This is particularly true for the human service organizations that people in need turn to first for help. 16 As a response, the CFMC announced the Futer Essential Human Services grant program, a multi-year initiative to strengthen safety net organizations in Monterey County. Ten high-performing human service organizations were awarded general operating grants of $50,000 per year for a total of $150,000 over three years to develop more effective practices and new business approaches. The grantees are: Coastal Kids Home Care, Community Human Services, Food Bank for Monterey County, Franciscan Workers of Junipero Serra, Housing Resource Center, Legal Services for Seniors, Shelter Outreach Plus, Sun Street Centers, United Farm Worker Foundation and YWCA Monterey County. Each organization is working on capacity-improvement goals based on their assessment of what is needed to sustain and grow their services. We are already seeing results as these agencies stretch in new, positive directions. For example, Sun Street Centers, which provides alcohol and drug addiction treatment in multiple sites, set a goal to reduce its reliance on government funding and increase community support. In less than a year, they have raised over $400,000, far exceeding their fundraising goal of $250,000. annual report 2012 Ten agencies were selected as Futer Essential Human Services grantees to receive multi-year funding and capacity building support. Futer grants are funded by the Rudy E. Futer Fund for Human and Humane Needs of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. Shelter Outreach Plus and Housing Resource Center, which together provide the full continuum of housing resources from emergency and transitional shelters to stable and permanent housing, have begun collaborating on fundraising and marketing initiatives where mutual benefits can be achieved. They see collaboration and sharing of resources as a way to economize their efforts and maximize their joint reach. Neighborhood Grants Program Small Grants, Big Impact “Small Grants, Big Impact” is perhaps the best way to describe the Neighborhood Grants Program (NGP). Since 1997, NGP has awarded over $700,000 in grants ranging from $500 to $4,000 to resident-led groups throughout Monterey County. Last year, NGP awarded 25 grants totaling $50,000. Although the grants are small by nonprofit budget standards, they provide a significant boost to these grassroots organizations. Neighborhood grants benefit local groups who help beautify their communities and keep them safe, youth sport “The grant allowed teams and arts organizations that provide positive after school activities, advocacy and us to engage our support groups, such as parents of children with neighbors to step up special needs, and many more. In 2012, the CFMC rolled out the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE) to help local nonprofit organizations “connect, lead and thrive” in today’s changing environment. Building on previous successes as the Management Assistance Program, the CNE seeks to incorporate new ways of strengthening nonprofits while responding to local needs. More in-depth training was offered in a multi-seminar setting, where teams from each organization were encouraged to apply new skills and tools between sessions. Almost 300 people participated in 10 trainings in which more than 100 organizations delved deeper into persistent concerns like how to expand their individual donor base and build a stronger board. Capacity builders’ network created closer coordination with other organizations that support nonprofits, such as the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Volunteer Center of the United Way Monterey County and Leadership Monterey Peninsula. They now jointly offer a stronger, more cohesive set of trainings. Over 250 people attended six coordinated events with topics ranging from board recruitment and fund development to collaboration. Greater use of online resources was encouraged through a region-wide calendar of over 200 webinars and in-person seminars and a monthly e-newsletter. Another way the CNE leveraged technology for learning was to create an online book group for nonprofits where 100 participants are exploring how to use social media more effectively. annual report 2012 Board Transformation Toolkits are now available on the CNE website. These short training modules on multiple topics are specially designed for board members to bring into their meetings to increase their board’s effectiveness in governing a nonprofit organization. The CNE is partnering with other local capacity building organizations to leverage their efforts Organizational development grants totaling $130,000 were awarded to help nonprofits strengthen their internal capacity. As part of the new Opportunity Fund (see next page), CFMC’s capacity-building funding has increased significantly, more than doubling the average of previous years. Strategic Partnership Program was a successful project to support organizations exploring collaboration. Six different groups of nonprofits, with over 50 organizations participating, received training and facilitation to explore strategic partnerships. As a result, these alliances have a stronger organizational commitment to working together and a deeper understanding of the risks and opportunities. The feedback received from nonprofit leaders has been extremely positive. They speak of the quality of programs and individual attention provided by the CNE and feel that the new brand is powerful and positive. The CNE will continue this innovative approach as well as conduct ongoing successful programs, such as the LEAD Institute (see next page), monthly meetings for board chairs, referrals to local consultants and informal consulting with local nonprofit organizations seeking advice. For more information or resources, visit www.cfmco.org/cne. The Center for Nonprofit Excellence received a generous grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation to support its first year of activities. LEAD Institute Opportunity Grants The LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) Institute of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence graduated its third cohort in 2012, and began the fourth. LEAD provides high-quality, in-depth professional development in leadership and management for talented nonprofit managers with the skills and experience to be successful in organizationwide leadership. LEAD provides a multicultural learning environment, with 12 seminar days over 10 months, complemented by applied learning, peer and leadership coaching and personal and professional goal setting. Strategic Partnership Team Mindful Social Media workshop with Beth Kanter 19 Emerging and Urgent Needs grants address situations that arise outside of the Community Impact grant cycle or when a small grant is needed to test an innovative idea or capture a promising opportunity. For example, the Breakaway College Access (BCA) project received $4,000 to expand to Pajaro Middle School its afterschool soccer academies that combine academics and sports. The goal is to make college a reality through college trips, meeting with soccer coaches and scholarships. Richard Green “I can honestly say that I can LEAD and not be perfect or try to fit into a specific mold... I am a leader. I am leading. I am very excited about what the future has in store for me.” — 2012 LEAD graduate Organizational Development grants support one-time internal capacity building, such as strategic planning and board development. One example is CASA Monterey County (dba Voices for Children). A $4,000 grant supported the rebranding of CASA to Voices for Children, which involved an extensive public outreach and marketing campaign. The grant also helped develop a new logo, website and print materials. “The name change makes much more sense, is easier to understand, and speaks more directly to our mission.” — Siobhan Greene, former Executive Director, Voices for Children An opportunity grant helped CASA rebrand to “Voices for Children” CNE Director Kaki Rusmore at launch event Richard Green Richard Green More than 60 organizations and 70 leaders from Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties have participated to date. LEAD equips nonprofit leaders The LEAD 2012-2013 Cohort gathers for a day of learning from a wide variety of organizations focusing on the arts, environment, health, education and social services and more. The CFMC responds quickly to time sensitive needs through its new Opportunity grants program. Thanks to additional support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, 58 Opportunity grants were awarded between January and December 2012, for a total of $203,946.
