As we have for nine decades, we bring the words of our mission, peace, justice, freedom and dignity to life every single day through our programs and services. This is a perfect time to look back on our rich history and how that mission lives on in our work today. We are committed to providing critical services that meet the growing and changing needs of women, children and families throughout the greater Princeton area. Last year alone, our programs reached thousands: • Breast Cancer Resource Center served 6,333 women. • English as a Second Language Program served 409 students from 42 countries. • Nursery School Program served 104 children. • The Stand Against Racism, founded by the YWCA Princeton and the YWCA Trenton, was held by 71 YWCAs across the country reaching 267,000 participants. • Aquatics Program served 4,100 children, teens and adults. • Dance Program served 686 children, adults and teens. • After School and Summer Camp served 740 children. We also introduced new programming through our Mission Advancement Program such as our first celebration of Women’s Equality Day commemorating the anniversary of the women’s right to vote and our Women’s Economic Empowerment Series with seminars that give women specific information on financial management such as “Getting Fiscally Fit,” “Investment Basics,” and more. These programs are empowering women with the knowledge they need to be financially savvy and independent. We are proud of our long history here in the greater Princeton community. With your help, we have been on the forefront of eliminating racism and empowering women for nine decades and have seen remarkable changes happening both in our communities. We began offering English language classes in the 1920’s to immigrants. In 1972, the YWCA Princeton established ENCORE, started as an aquatics rehabilitation program for women who had undergone mastectomies and was later expanded and renamed the Breast Cancer Resource Center. In 1995, we established a program specifically designed for preschoolers with little or no English language skills to foster school readiness. And in 2008, the YWCA Princeton and the YWCA Trenton came together to hold our first Stand Against Racism, inviting the community to come together to “take a stand.” This program has become a model and is now held at YWCAs across the county. These are just a few of the milestones on our journey together. Thank you for being a part of our past and we look forward to you being a part of our future as we continue to meet the needs of all our community members. Thank you, Judy Hutton, Chief Executive Officer Diane Lefebvre, President Board of Directors 1 sources and uses of operating funds 2010-2011 Investment Return - 5% Membership Dues - 2% Special Events - 7% Program Services - 71% Government Grants - 5% Contributions 4% Foundation Grants - 6% total revenue: $3,954,504 Fundraising - 7% Management & General - 11% Total Programming - 81% total expenses: $4,110,413 2 program highlights advocacy On April 7, YWCA Princeton staff joined nearly 250 YWCA leaders from around the country exerting their “Persimmon Power” in the halls of Congress. YWCA executives and staff met with nearly 80 members of Congress and congressional aides, advocating against budget cuts to community service programs, which fund vital services critical to the YWCA’s two million clients across the country. The YWCA Princeton attended meetings with legislative aids from the offices of Senator Frank Lautenberg, Senator Robert Menendez, and Congressman Rush Holt to advocate for three major funding streams critical for nearly 300 YWCA’s nationwide: the Child Care Development Block Grant, the Community Development Block Grant, and the Victims of Crime Act. bcrc Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC) members and volunteers gathered in early May to stitch together prayer flags made by survivors attending recent retreats. The Nurturing Journey Breast Cancer Survivorship Retreat Series is designed to help women explore new ways to cope, to learn, and to grow while reconnecting with body, mind, and spirit after a breast cancer diagnosis. Along with many types of nurturing activities, attendees created prayer flags from simple pieces of cloth and decorated them – with writing, designs, fabric, feathers, or sequins – during the course of the retreat weekend and hung them by the ocean as part of the retreat’s closing ceremony. A group of survivors transformed these prayer flags into beautiful quilts (one seen here) for display at future retreats. 3 program highlights esl Student from the English as a Second Language Program (ESL) attended the Holiday Open House at New Jersey’s Governor’s mansion, Drumthwacket. It was a unique opportunity to learn more about New Jersey’s rich history. Students were treated to the spectacular seasonal decorations courtesy of garden clubs from across the state. dance Students performed Jellicle Ball from the Broadway musical “CATS” as part of Princeton’s Communiversity celebrations last April. The YWCA Princeton offers Musical Theater Jazz through the dance department where children learn dance technique and choreography from the most popular Broadway shows! women’s equality day The League of Women Voters of the Princeton Area joined the YWCA Princeton in celebrating Women’s Equality Day with a showing of “Iron Jawed Angels.” This movie tells the story of Alice Paul, a resident of New Jersey, and her fight for the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. 4 our partners make a difference! nrg energy, inc. NRG Energy, Inc. employees lent a helping hand and lots of muscle to the YWCA Princeton as part of its “NRG Global Giving Day.” In preparation of the June 20th start of the YWCA’s summer day camps, dance camps, gymnastic camps, and adventure camps, NRG volunteers landscaped the grounds, added play space and spruced up the Nursery School facilities. mercer county community college save - a friend to homeless animals Our Nursery School Program provides many enrichment activities for our preschoolers including a partnership with SAVE – A Friend to Homeless Animals. Each week, a volunteer from SAVE visits our Nursery School, bringing a furry, four legged friend to teach children the proper care and respect for animals. Children have an opportunity to interact with a dog or cat and learn about animals that need homes. YWCA Princeton staff participated in a free, onsite training program provided by the Center for Training and Development at Mercer County Community College. This opportunity, made possible through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development in partnership with the New Jersey Business & Industry Association and the Community College Consortium, was beneficial as the YWCA transitioned to Microsoft Office 2010. Instruction in Word, Excel, and Outlook prepared employees to work more efficiently, providing not only a solid knowledge base in the Microsoft Office suite, but also new insights into leveraging technology’s power in areas such as member communications, calendar scheduling, business analytics, and developing engaging presentations. Team building was an additional outcome, as employees shared suggestions about using the new software to grow our programs. 5 Not pictured: Debra Joy Perez Patricia Sellers tribute to women 2011 Event Chair, Linda Richter and Keynote Speaker, Patricia Sellers, of Fortune helped to honor ten outstanding women who have made significant contributions to their professions and communities at the YWCA Princeton’s 2011 Tribute to Women Awards Dinner. 2011 Tribute to Women Honorees: Sandra Baumann Tyco International Beth Ogilvie-Freda Ogilvie Appraisals, LLC Susan Pikaart Bristol Susan Pikaart Bristol Architect Debra Joy Perez Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Jessica Durrie Small World Coffee Terri Harris Reed Princeton University Elizabeth Gray Erickson Community Volunteer Mika Ryan Community Volunteer Maria Falca-Dodson NJ Air National Guard Irene Etkin Goldman Fannie E.
