At that time, Sgt. Jeff Patton met his new partner, Charlie, a 1-year old German Shepherd from Slovakia. Charlie is now 9 years old and is retiring. Recovering from back surgery in April 2016, Charlie recovered well, but arthritis is now taking its toll. As a team, Charlie and Sgt. Patton have been deployed approximately 700 times as of Dec. 2016. They’ve had numerous narcotic finds with the largest being 6 pounds of marijuana. Charlie has also made more than 30 suspect apprehensions. Here are a couple of Charlie’s memorable deployments: In May 2009, Charlie and Sgt. Patton were called in to work a vehicle pursuit with 4 robbery suspects. The suspects crashed their vehicle and fled the scene. Three were located and arrested by pursuing units. Ninety minutes after the pursuit of the first 3 suspects, Charlie tracked down the fourth suspect, who was hiding behind a garage. In June 2009, following a business robbery on Glenway Ave., Charlie tracked in the parking lot, through woods, and into a yard. There he found all the money from the business as well as clothing the suspect was wearing. Investigators were able to get DNA from the clothing and a suspect was arrested 1 year later, eventually pleading guilty to robbery. . According to Sgt. Patton, “Charlie has been a huge asset to the City of Cheviot Police Dept. Thanks to Charlie, the public relations between the community and the police department have been very positive.” The City is working on a replacement K9 and Charlie will retire and live with Sgt. Patton and his family. Cheviot Outdoor Market Event Here’s your opportunity to get involved with a fun start-up event!
