Drones Narrative Performance Task
Introduction:
[Attention Getter]: Finally, my team and I just received confirmation from the
Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) to use a drone to film a volcano eruption.
[Background information]:
I
work for National Geographic’s and they assigned me to go to the Hawaiian Islands to film a
volcano erupt. The scientists who study this volcano hypothesized that the volcano will not
release lava, but will start to release smoke. My mission is to capture the beginning stages of
how it is like before a volcano erupts. A helicopter flies overhead and a package tied to a
parachute is launched down in our direction. The package slowly floats down to our camp, where
my team and I begin to gather. The package lands softly and my partner unwraps it. In big red
letters, it read “DRONE.” [Controlling Idea/Thesis/Claim]: I just received my new drone and I am
excited to turn it on.
Body 1:
[Topic Sentence]:
In the past, the FAA did not have many regulations on drone
users. [Evidence]: However, there have been many incidents where drones have been dangerous
and interfering with other aircraft. In my case, I am an explorer and I intend to capture the
world on film to show the world how it works. [Evidence]: In a normal situation, I would have to fly
the drone under 400 feet in altitude, but now, that does not apply because we are on the top of
a cliff ready to film a volcano. We are standing away from the mouth of the volcano because it
is much safer and cheaper than using a regular helicopter. I know the scientist said the volcano
wouldn’t erupt, but we can never be too safe. [Transition/closing]: It can go to the areas that are
too dangerous for us to go to, which is why we asked for a drone to begin with.
Body 2:
Now, I take hold of the remote, turn on the drone, and it begins to fly. We know
the camera is recording by the little red light that is flickering. There is a computer screen
that shows us what is being filmed. After everything is working correctly, I fly the drone to
the mouth of the volcano. We are observing how the volcano is releasing smoke into the sky,
until suddenly; the smoke begins shooting out faster, and faster. “This is not right,” my partner
says, “The scientists did not predict this, I think the volcano is about to explode!” My heart
began racing. I remembered the villagers that lived at the bottom of the volcano. “Quick!” I
yelled, “We have to warn the villagers!” We had a couple hours to get to the villagers and warn
them. I made sure the drone was recording the entire time.
Body 3:
In the village, the people were harvesting bananas and pineapples. We arrived in
a hurry and warned, “The volcano is about to erupt! We must evacuate immediately!” The
villagers did not waste any time and luckily they were prepared for the day when the volcano
decided to unleash its molten rock, the lava. The villagers lead us to a volcano shelter on the top
of the highest cliff and we all watched the volcano in silence. The volcano’s sound rumbled the
earth and began spitting out its lava. The lava began creeping out of the volcano’s mouth slowly
made its way into the village. I quickly made sure my drone had enough battery life and began
recording the terror of the volcano. The drone was able to get so close to film the damage the
lava caused in the village. My team, the villagers, and I stayed at the shelter for a week. I
captured the entire eruption on film, including the damaged village.
Conclusion: [Concluding statement]: In the end, my footage of the volcanic eruption was a
huge hit. My film was premiered on a special episode on T.V. that informed viewers about the
way a volcano erupts. As for the villagers, we were able [evidence]: to send my footage of the
damages caused by the lava to the insurance companies. The people were able to quickly begin
rebuilding their village to recover after the disaster thanks to the information I provided to
the insurance companies. [Lesson learned]:
