Dear AP US History Student: WELCOME TO APUSH!!!
To prepare for the AP class, you are required to complete a “SUMMER ASSIGNMENT.” Since the AP History
curriculum is so extensive, reading the beginning chapters of the text makes it possible to cover more periods of
history during the school year.
The Summer Assignment includes the following:
1) CHAPTER SUMMARIES 1-2-3:

On the left click on Chapters 1-2-3 – make a copy of each chapter
• Read the Chapter Summaries and Complete the assignment for each Chapter
(Assign Sheet attached at the end of this letter)
The Assignment is due at the end of the first week of school. You will be taking the first
these 3 Chapters sometime during the second week of school.

2) OPTIONAL “Bonus” Assignment: You may want to take advantage of this Assignment to
earn some extra Bonus Points that will be added to your quarter AP Grade. The Bonus is
due the first day of class.
Below you will find a list of films and documentaries. View one film from each list – Early America – Civil War AND
Recent History. Choose films that you have not seen already. Also, choose movies that your parents will not object to
your viewing. For each film write 2-3 pages (no more than 3 pages) discussing each of the following:
1) write a brief summary of the film, 2) State your opinion of the film – describe its strengths & weaknesses,
3) explain which character(s) did you identify with most –what are the main personality of the character,
4) how does the film relate to American culture and this period of American history, 5) other reactions?
