Lesson 5: Place Value - Groups of Tens 0-100
Objective
Students will be able to identify groups of ten up to 100.
Tell students that the red rings mark the tens. Ask the students to slide the first red ring and all
the rings in front of it to the left. Look at the number next to the ring (10). Now slide the next
red ring to the left and read the number next to it (20). Continue sliding each read ring and
saying the number aloud as a class.

Practice – Have students identify the number of tens on the MathLine. [There are 4 tens.]
Have them trace over the number 4.
Activities - Complete the first problem with students and model it on MathLine. Encourage
students to complete the other problems independently.
Challenge - Make sure students understand that there are 10 pennies (10 rings) in each
dime. Ask them to complete the Challenge.
Extension
Pair students. Each group will need one MathLine and blank cards. Have one
student write a multiple of ten from 0-100. Have the other student model it. Then
ask the team to take one ten away. Write the new number. Ask the team to add on
a ten write that new number.
