“My Soul’s a Shepherd too”
In George Herbert’s poem “Christmas,” he imagines meeting Christ as
he journeys by horseback. Tired and distracted, he is not thinking of
important things, but realises that here is the place where Christ may
rest and that his “glorious yet contracted light, wrapped in night’s
mantle, stole into a manger.” If Christ could enter the world in this
way then he could enter into his heart as he meets him on the road.
So what should he do? Well he can sing like the shepherds on
Christmas morning “The shepherds sing and shall I silent be? My God,
no hymn for thee.”
And so he sees his soul as a shepherd. “My soul’s a shepherd too, a
flock it feeds of thoughts and words and deeds. The pasture is thy
word, the streams, thy grace, enriching all this place.”
Herbert wants us to use Christmas to refocus ourselves on what is
really important. To place Christ at the centre of all that we are - our
heart. To meditate on the most important words, the bible and our
worship and not let distractions get in our way. Herbert himself
realised that he himself was weighed down by “the grief of pleasures.”
That’s pretty much what we say today about indulging ourselves and
expecting instant gratification and is one reason that Herbert’s poetry
still speaks to us today.
Best wishes, Jonathan Cooper
