ARTH-A102 RENAISSANCE THROUGH MODERN ART
This course surveys major monuments of Western art and architecture since 1300. You will learn how
to identify period styles such as
Renaissance, Romantic, and Surrealist and learn how these monuments
reflected and shaped the social
values, cultural norms, and political realities of their times. Among
the monuments we will study are:
da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the palace at
Versailles, the Eiffel Tower, Manet’s
Dejeuner sur l’herbe, Picasso’s
Guernica, and Maya Lin’s Vietnam
Veterans’ Memorial.
The format is 2 lectures and 1 discussion section per week. Discussions
will emphasize cooperation, collaboration, and will include museum
visits. We’ll discuss topics such as art
conservation, fakes and forgeries,
public sculpture and public morality,
art dealers and the art market.
Our text will be smarthistory.
khanacademy.org and Canvas PDFs.
Assessment will be based on attendance, participation in sections,
weekly assignments, a term project/
