Longtime
Employee of
HILCO Retires
On October 4, 2013,
HILCO Electric Cooperative
said farewell to long-time
employee Gary Bob Wilson.
Bob, as he is known to most,
began his career with the
cooperative on January 6, 1975. After earning a BBA
in Marketing from Texas Wesleyan University in Fort
Worth, he accepted a position with the cooperative,
advising the General Manager at the time, Ralph
Bailey, that he would work at the cooperative for a few
months “until something better came along.” Heading
up the marketing and member services department for
much of his career, over 38 years passed before Bob
found something better – retirement.
An Itasca native, Bob has been extremely active in
the communities served by HILCO. He has served as
the Chairman of Texas Electric Cooperative Member
Services Association; president of Itasca Chamber of
Commerce, Whitney Chamber of Commerce, West
Chamber of Commerce, Itasca Rotary Club and Hill
College Century Club. He has served the community
as Democratic Precinct #9 Chairman in Hill County, as
Chairman of Itasca Boy Scouts Troop 366, and has
been a member of the Advisory Committee of Hill
County
4-H
Club.
He
held
several offices
in other local,
state
and
national
organizations
and
has
received
numerous
awards
and
recognition for
trade accomplishments and civic service including the
2013 National Brand Champion Award from
Touchstone Energy.
HILCO serves over 24,000 electric meters in
Johnson, Dallas, Ellis, Hill and McLennan Counties.
Both employees and members will miss working with
Bob Wilson, but wish him well as he enjoys some welldeserved free time.

“Cans for Paw
Pals” Totals
12,874 Pounds!
Hill County Paw Pals’
“Cans for Paw Pals” project
recently produced a harvest
of 860 pounds of aluminum
cans for $530.20. Proceeds
from this worthy project are used to support the mission
of Paw Pals: 1) Facilitate installation of a county animal
control program and promote and contribute to building
a county animal shelter; and 2) Organize to challenge the
overpopulation of unwanted companion animals (dogs
and cats) with four programs working simultaneously–
Education, Legislation, Spay/Neuter, and Adoption
(Project ELSA).
Since the inception of this fund raiser in September
2006, 15 harvests have been made for a total of $8,207.62.
This equates to 360,472 cans with a combined weight of
12,874 pounds! If one were to place this number of cans
end to end, the cans would stretch 27 miles (from
Hillsboro to Alvarado)! To put this into symbolic
perspective, each of these donated cans was handled by a
person who consciously made a determination to place
the empty can into a receptacle destined to “Cans for Paw
Pals”—a seemingly slight but in reality a major
contribution in correcting pet overpopulation since the
success of our endeavors is based on a collective
community wanting to improve the place we call home.
This worthy project is managed by Jean and JD Landis.
This couple’s selfless devotion and contribution to Paw
Pals’ undertaking bring great commendation and
represents the warm and progressive spirit that exists in
our community. The 16’ caged trailer used for this
worthy project (valued at $1,600) was graciously donated
by Ronnie & Dana Fuchs, proprietors of Cen-Tex
Trailers of Hillsboro.
If you would like to participate with “Cans for Paw
Pals”, please bring your clean aluminum cans to
Brookshire’s in Hillsboro, at our Pet Adoption Center
(PAC) during the Low Cost Spay/Neuter and Vaccination
Clinic on the first Tuesday of each month which is located
at 1500 South Abbott Avenue in Hillsboro, drop them off
at Jean and JD’s home which is located one mile west of
Hackberry bridge on SH 22 (west of Hillsboro), or simply
call 580-0679 to arrange for pick up. Please do not donate
aluminum foil, pie tins or cat food cans (recycler will not
accept these items). If you would like to join the success of
Paw Pals, please complete the Volunteer Opportunity
form (http://hcpawpals.org/Volunteer.aspx) or call us at
254.580.0679.

The Dew of Life
To see the world through Jesus ‘eyes
Is everything to me.
Loving everyone as Jesus did
Strengthens and sets me free.
When I can love the unlovable
And true worth plainly see;
When I give to feed the hungry
Fills me up, feeding me.
Sharing faith with unbelievers,
Knowing it will change thoughts,
Increases value of life for everyone;
Shows the cost of CalvaryAnd what our Savior bought.
Blessings abounding all around us
Are for those who will believe.
I must be willing not only to give,
But also to receive.

Eighteen-year-old Isaac John Stickel son
of Melissa and Isaac Stickel is a graduating senior at Itasca High. He was born
August 5, 1995 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Isaac has one sister, Miranda (19) and a brother, Brandon
(16).
Isaac has attended IHS on and off for 3 years. He will always remember his great teachers; especially Justin Maenner
and Ron Bishop. After high school, Isaac plans to join the Navy. He wants to advance and make the Navy his career. If
Isaac chooses college, he will attend the University of West
Virginia. “I want to make money, and be successful,” he said
In his free time, he can be found hunting and watching
football and going to the movies. His favorite subject is science
and his favorite food is pizza, hands down.
He enjoys taking trips with his family and
dislikes when people act immature.
Isaac can be described as “funny, mean,
and sarcastic.” His red hair and goofy smile
are what makes him unique. Isaac is a “chill
kind of guy who can keep it cool and not get
mad.”
He is looking forward to prom and
graduation, of course. Isaac looks back and loves his middle
school football memories. When asked his most embarrassing
moment, Isaac said, “You can’t get embarrassed. Just embrace
it.”

The ballot will feature nine proposed amendments for voters to
decide, including Proposition 6, which could address water needs
in the state well into the future. The proposition would create the
State Water Implementation and State Water Implementation
Revenue funds. It would assist in the financing of priority projects
in the state water plan to ensure the availability of adequate water
resources in the future. Estimates indicated that the state’s population will double by 2060, and additional nine-million acre feet of
water or three trillion gallons will be needed to meet the demand.
A State Water Plan has been on the books for years, but this is the
first meaningful step by legislators to come up with a funding
mechanism for its implementation.

“I will never forget how pumped we get
at our pep rallies,” said eighteen year
old, Shyanne Reece, who is the daughter
of Shawnasey and Bobby Stanford.
Shyanne has attended Itasca ISD since
she was in 3rd grade and has loved
Itasca. Shyanne has two loving brothers, Cody (21) and Colton
(8). “A fun thing that I love about my family is that they have a
really odd sense of humor,” said Shyanne. Included in this
family are her three pets: Bullet, Fancy, and Firefly.
Sarcastic, humorous, and friendly are words Shyanne
would use to describe herself. She loves her eyes and finds her
height a unique quality. Her school activities consist of playing
the clarinet in band, and an active member of FFA. When she
is not in school, she attends the Cowboy Church in Maypearl.
Her favorites include chicken fajitas, making people smile, and
sleeping. Shyanne’s favorite teachers are Mr. Middleton, Mr. Bishop,
and Mr. Lockheart. “My favorite
sport is most definitely football,”
said Shyanne and her role model is
her brother, Cody. Her most treasured memory is the birth of her
younger brother, Colton. Among
school memories, being kicked out of
athletics is a fond one.
Upon Graduation, Reece plans to
attend Navarro College to become an
Occupational Therapist Assistant. In ten years, Shyanne hopes
to be living in the mountains of
Georgia.
Melvin’s Musings
Dr. Melvin Curry Class of 1952
One of many pests we had plenty of back on the farm were chicken
snakes. None were poisonous except
the cotton mouth moccasins at the
creek. We saw the chicken snakes or
skins everywhere. We had a cellar,
and in the cracks, you could see the shed skins and occasional
live snakes. We dreaded going in there during storms. They
were not poisonous and would not bite you, they were just big.
We always carried a light when we gathered eggs in the
early morning. One time Mother hollered for me to bring some
eggs. I did not have a light and trying to take a short cut, I
thought that I could get them this time without a light. I stuck
my hand in several nests, and then I felt this big cold slivering
snake. I managed to get my hand out, and killed him with the
light. You tell from the lumps along his body he had eaten
many eggs. I never did that again.
One day I found a huge snake in an old tire, and my dog
Oogie was barking and digging the ground acting as if he was
really going after him. I got a small switch and ran it between
his legs. He jumped up and backwards, he thought he had
been bit. We made our own amusement.

Wampus Cats VS Gladiators

Friday’s rivalry game between Itasca and Italy took place at
Itasca’s Patton Field. Itasca’s first district game commenced
with Italy winning the coin toss and choosing to receive in the
first quarter. With a touchdown drive, the Gladiators scored
the first points of the game (7-0). The Wampus Cats were
quickly intercepted in their first play, and the Gladiators
gained another touchdown. #22 Wayne Arellano charged
through a pack of Gladiators to get the first down.
In the second quarter, the Cats punted, and Italy was unable to grip the ball so #51 Tristen Prescott recovered it. With
Itasca in control of the ball, #5 Taylor Minyard passed the ball
to #22 Wayne Arellano for a touchdown. Italy quickly answered back by scoring one of their own. Itasca ended the half
with #22 Wayne Arellano making a shoestring tackle, and #54
Casey Carranza making a sack (33-6).
The Gladiators started the third quarter with another
touchdown under their belt. The Cats fumbled the ball and
quickly recovered it, but were unable to score again. The game
ended with Italy intercepting the ball and running it for a
touchdown (46-6).
Next week the Wampus Cats travel to Cayuga for their second district game of the season. Come support your varsity
team! Do not forget to mark your calendars for October 25th as
Itasca takes on Dallas Gateway for the Homecoming game at
7:30.

interrupt her, and have a lack of respect.
“May your neighbors respect you, troubles neglect you,
angels protect you, and heaven accept you.” “I love that
quote; it explains life perfectly.” NaNa looks up to her
cousin Danitra and “my granny is my best friend. She
helps me through anything. I know she has my back
when no one else does.” NaNa
would like to thank her Granny
(Shirley Anderson) and her
Momma. “Granny changed my
life in a big way.” “Momma always makes me laugh even when
I’m sad.”
She is looking forward to senior prom and graduation. In the
future, NaNa plans to attend
Blinn and then transfer to Grambling. One of NaNa’s
future goals is to be a successful professional singer. She
also wants to make enough money to provide for her
family. NaNa is very confident and encouraging. NaNa
leaves Itasca with a smile and an education. She will always look back and remember all the good times she
had, and the lessons she learned.

Wampus Cat of the Week
Reporter Jennifer Murray
Photographer Bekah Payne
Mrs. Nancy
Watson deserves
the
title
of
Wampus Cat of
the Week. Not
only will you
find her teaching high school
students,
but
middle school as well. We hear students say they
do not have an artistic side, but Mrs. Watson will
say, “Switch over to the right side of your brain”.
Whether it is doing daily sketchbook drawings
or learning art elements, Mrs. Watson will draw it
out of you (no pun intended).
She truly is an amazing educator with vast artistic abilities. If you see her, stop and
say “great job”.
Keep up all the hard work
you do Mrs. Watson, and
thank you.
