Knights win Div. II state title in girls soccer 2-1 in overtime Down 0-1 to Granville with 50 seconds left in regular play, senior Alexandra Sheldon scored the goal
that sent the game into overtime. Sophomore Liz Gilbert scored what would be the winning goal with
an assist from Sheldon. The Knights (19-2-1) prevailed 2-1 over the Blue Aces (17-4-2) to take the
OHSAA state championship in Division II girls soccer at Columbus Mapfre Stadium Nov. 13.
Hoban dedicates Health and Fitness Center, celebrates conclusion of $6.6 million campaign The conclusion to the most successful capital campaign in Hoban history was celebrated at the dedication of the
Hoban Health and Fitness Center on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the newly constructed facility.
Dignitaries, friends and donors were given a tour of the new facility, heard presentations and participated in the
blessing of the building, led by the Rev. Michael Ausperk and student representatives. The leadership team of the
campaign was recognized, including honorary co-chairs Philip Maynard and Richard Fedorovich and steering
committee co-chairs William Scala and David Showers. The dedication concludes the "This is Hoban" campaign
which included $1.4 million for the school’s endowment funds and $2.5 million for the Maynard Family Center for

Hoban Theater presents 'The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail' This year's fall play ran for three nights in early November and
garnered rave reviews. For detailed information and pictures of

Canned food drive will help needy families
Through the generous donations of Hoban students and families,15 area agencies will receive
nonperishable food items from the annual canned food drive. The drive began Nov. 2 and will run
through next week. As of Nov. 16, the total was 15,373 cans. All donations are accepted and greatly
appreciated.
Admissions
office to host evening open house
Hoban invites all seventh and eighth grade students and their families to join
us for the next Open House on Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tour
the school, meet the faculty, staff, students, coaches and alumni and learn
more about a Holy Cross education.
Hoban vs. St. Vincent-St. Mary OHSAA football regional final is Friday, Nov. 20
The game is at 7:30 p.m. at Infocision Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m. We are on the home team on
the press box side.
Tickets are being sold $8 presale in the Athletic Office 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday. Sales will end at 3 p.m. on Friday. We will also have parents selling tickets during lunch in
Foley Commons. A portion of the presale tickets will go back to Hoban. Tickets are $9 at the stadium
on Friday.
Parking will be $5. Lot 9 will be $10 for all day tailgating.

Hoban students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation
Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Holy Cross Chapel. Local parish priests will be available to hear confessions
throughout the day. Dinner will help hungry celebrate Thanksgiving
Project HOPE will again host a Thanksgiving dinner at the Front Porch Cafe on Grant Street for
community members on Wednesday, Nov. 25, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Food donations are needed. If you
are interested in donating, the menu is turkey and ham (sliced and cooked please), stuffing, mashed
potatoes, green bean dish, chocolate chip cookies and pumpkin pie. Beverages have been provided.
If you are donating food, please make sure all of the food is prepared beforehand. Place all food in
disposable pans, no personal cookware. We ask all food be brought in on the Monday or Tuesday
before. Volunteers are on a limited basis because of overcrowding in prior years. Peace and Justice Club expands Fair Trade Sale
Hoban's Fair Trade sale is Tuesday, Nov. 24, during the school day. Students,
faculty and parents are welcome to buy fair trade items from seven visiting
vendors. If you are unable to make Hoban's Fair Trade sale, consider hosting a
fair trade event at your house. Invite your friends over. Mr. Milo's wife,Terra, will
bring Trades of Hope fair trade jewelry, scarves and home decor or items, plus
some fair trade chocolate to enjoy. You and your friends can learn more about
women around the world whose lives are made better by fair trade. Eat some
chocolate, and go shopping. To book a party, email [email protected]. Vendors for the Hoban Fair Trade event: Ten Thousand Villages, Trades of Hope, IRTF, the Market
Path, Threads, the Silk Road, and Holy Land Handicrafts Cooperative.
Choir and orchestra to conduct concert Monday, Dec. 14
This year's choir and orchestra concert will be held at the Akron Public Library Auditorium, 60 S. High
St. in Akron from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

announced
Each grading period two students from each grade level
are selected by the Academic Review Board to be
Academic Knights and Chivalrous Knighs. Academic
Knights excel in scholarship. They also demonstrate
leadership, service to the Hoban family, service to the
community, Christian values and good character.
Chivalrous Knights exhibit industriousness in the
classroom, outstanding effort, involvement in student
activities, Christian values, and a polite, positive and
helpful attitude toward others.

Freshmen elect student council representatives
Members of the Class of 2019 have elected their class
officers, who will represent them on student council. They
are (clockwise from upper right) president Jacob Biscan,
and vice-presidents Abigail Griffith, Sarah Caley
and Sadie Salamone. These four students are excited to
be involved in student council and hope to have a great
impact on the school community
Ladies Luncheon held at Fairlawn Country
Club
The Ladies Luncheon in preparation for Extravaganza
2016 was held at the Fairlawn Country Club at noon on
Oct. 28. As admission, those attending were asked to
donate a gift in value of $50 or more, such as a unique
home décor item or ladies accessories. The program
featured Kristy Stewart of Sugar Loves Spice Boutique,

Lewis, Marshall nominated for Wendy's High
School Heisman
For over 20 years, Wendy's has teamed up with the
Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee to create the
Wendy's High School Heisman Award. The award honors
both male and female high school students who excel in
academics, athletics and student leadership. Scholarship
Management Services, a Division of Scholarship America,
evaluates applicants and determines school winners,
state finalists and state winners. A distinguished panel of
judges votes on national finalists and national winners.
The Hoban nominees for 2015-16 are seniors Nicholas
Lewis and Kara Marshall.
Todd Sibley shines in High School Spotlight
Junior running back Todd Sibley was one of five studentathletes featured in the Akron Beacon Journal’s High
School Spotlight in the Nov. 12 paper. He was
recognized for his performance in the OHSAA Division II
regional quarterfinal with New Philadelphia on Nov. 6. In
that game he rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns
on 35 carries. Hoban won 35-21 and advanced to a
regional semifinal against Louisville at Green High School

Art club to display work at the Akron Art Museum
Artwork created by the Hoban art club will be displayed at the
Akron Art Museum in the Island of Misfit Toys student exhibition.
The sculptures will be exhibited in the Corbin Gallery from Nov.
27, 2015, to Feb. 28, 2016. Art club members sculpted and
painted on blank designer toys known as Munnys. Created by
KidRobot, Munnys are soft, supersmooth vinyl figures that
artists of all sorts have embraced and come to love.
Participating art club members include Rebecca Kneier,
Elizabeth Jorgensen, Alexandria Artino, Elvis Yand, Maria
Redle, Lauren Fricker, Ian Doucet and Josie Savitski. Art club,
led by Mr. Zach Feador, meets weekly and is open to all
students.
AP Biology students attend conference on genetics
Students in AP Biology attended a Genetic Update Conference
Nov. 3 at Rocky River High School, where they learned about
the most up-to-date research in medical genetics and tissue
engineering. Here Sam Rhine, who spoke at the conference,
chats with seniors Ben Sutter, Jacob Romero, Lauren Cea and
Alexia Markowski, along with their teacher, Mrs. Amie Mancine.
“Our students left inspired and excited to learn more about the
future of biology, genetics, bio-medical engineering and
medicine,” Mancine said. Mrs. Candy Bates and Mrs. Sam

Girls soccer team takes regional title
The girls soccer team beat Mentor Lake Catholic 2-1 at
Ravenna High School Nov. 7 to become the OHSAA Region 5
champion and advance to the state final four in Division II.
Senior Ashley Dobbins and junior Olivia Petit scored Hoban’s
goals. The Knights (17-2-1) next face Celina (17-4) in the state
semifinal at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at a site to be announced.
Honor roll is published for first grading period
Students qualifying for the first-quarter honor roll have been
announced. To be listed on the honor roll, a student must have
a 3.00 grade-point average, with no grade lower than C-minus.
There are three honor roll classifications:
Highest Honors: 3.85 to 4.83
High Honors: 3.50 to 3.84
Honors: 3.00 to 3.49
Students on the honor roll for the first three quarters qualify for
a Scholastic Honor Award presented at Honor Night in May. For
the first-quarter lists, click HERE. Kline commits to play baseball at University of Findlay
Senior baseball player Drew Kline signed a National Letter of
Intent Nov. 11 to play for the University of Findlay. His
teammate, senior Jacob Bonner, has announced he will
continue his academic and baseball careers at Baldwin Wallace
University.
Knights win Div. II district title in girls soccer
For the fifth year in a row, the girls soccer team captured the
OHSAA Div. II district championship Oct. 29. Hoban beat
Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy 5-0 at Highland High
School. The Knights (15-2-1) advance to the regional semifinals
Nov. 3 at Nordonia High School, where they face Niles McKinley
(15-2-2).
Senior Allie Purcell crowned homecoming queen
At the halftime ceremonies of the Padua Franciscan football
game on Oct. 16, Allie Purcell was crowned queen of the 2015
homecoming court. Elected by her classmates, she reigned over
the dance in Barry Gym on Oct. 17. The theme of the dance
was "A Knight on the Red Carpet."
Earlier, members of the court were presented to the student
body at an all-school assembly on Friday, Oct. 16. They were
freshmen Audrey Scanlon and Zoe Farrah, sophomores Jenna
Poor and Sam Wentz, juniors Claire Frego and Christina Miller
and seniors Dominica Allio, Kaitlin Kleinman, Emma Bennett,
Julie Ciotola, Jaqueline Krim and Purcell. More picrures HERE.
Students place calls to raise funds in annual Alumni
Phonathon
During the fall of each year the alumni association conducts the
HOBAN Fund Phonathon, enlisting contributions to provide
financial backing for needed school projects and programs,
primarily scholarships. On the evening of Nov. 4, seven students
paid it forward by calling alumni to raise money for the HOBAN
Fund, from which they receive financial aid and scholarships.
They raised over $6,000 in two hours. The alumni association
annually donates over $100,000 to the school.
Students plant native grasses, wildflowers in National Park
The environmental science classes visited Oak Hill Trailhead in
Cuyahoga Valley National Park on Oct. 20. Students used
dibbles, a specialized planting tool, to create holes for native
grasses and wildflowers, such as purple coneflower, yarrow and
switchgrass. Most of these plants will survive over winter and be
ready to flower again in the spring. Students planted 2,585
plants in less than four hours. The field trip is part of the
environmental science curriculum. Students will visit the park
again in the spring to remove invasive trees and shrubs.
