Congruatulations Prime Minister.’ JUNIOR CONCERT This term’s junior concert highlighted once again not only the astonishing musical talent of some of our juniors, but also the general level of enthusiasm and skill of the many. With over 70 performers on strings, brass, woodwind, percussion and voice, and a wide range of genres represented in a programme bridging many centuries and styles, this was a delightful late afternoon concert. Soloists Brendan Bennett, Charlotte Dinwiddy, Jonny Kajoba, Jennifer Clare and Adam Cubitt deserve special mention for performances of extraordinary confidence and musicality, but everyone who played or sang can pat themselves on the back for a job extremely well done. Many congratulations one and all, and of course to the teachers who helped bring it all together so marvellously on the day; many thanks also to the audience for supporting so generously the retiring collection to the tune of £264.86 to be shared between two Nepal disaster aid charities. ADVENTURES IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY Year 10 pupil Harrison Cole holds an Organ bursary from the East Anglian Academy of Organ & Early Keyboard Music. He’s recently participated in two public master-classes - one locally with Anne Page, on JS Bach, and another at St Giles-in-the-Fields in central London, with Jonathan Bunney: this was given under the auspices of the Royal College of Organists, on 18th century English organ music. Earning great praise from both tutors, Harrison is resolved to investigate both repertoires further. Harrison isn’t the only Woodbridge School pupil to hold an EAA bursary: Charlie Green is another, and both of them will appear with current Year 10 pupil Joseph Brierly (cello) and Rosa Gaffney OW (recorders) in a showcase concert at St Michael’s Church, Framlingham on Sunday 20 September at 3.00pm: to book tickets and find out more about their adventures on the EAA website – www.eastanglianacademy.org.uk YEAR 7S TAKE ON SPONSORED WALK CHALLENGE All strength to the legs of our Year 7s Hope Jerstice, Zoe Newman, Beth Turner, Madeleine Cheshire, Lauren Wilkes, Neve Walker and Nell Pilkington (and more may yet join the enterprise…). On 16 May they are embarking upon a trek from Woodbridge School to Felixstowe in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust charity. Please support them generously as they seek to complete their near half-marathon distance: visit their Just Giving page here. CSI: WOODBRIDGE On Friday 24 April, thirty budding crime scene investigators arrived from Year 5 at St Mary’s School to help us solve a crime. They were given the following case notes: - The chemistry lab has been broken into; - The intruder has moved things around and we think might have stolen something; - The intruder has also left us a note in code and has also left a glass of drink in the lab; - The intruder has bypassed the alarm by using a home-made electrical cell from some metal strips and a lemon; - We have the profiles of three people who might be the intruder. The students’ investigations were thorough and they quickly worked out who the culprit was, how they broke in, what they stole and why. The culprit was swiftly apprehended and the case closed. Everyone had a great time and we all enjoyed meeting such a bright and enthusiastic group of students. THE YEAR 8 PLAY: THE GENERAL INSPECTION WEDNESDAY 20 MAY ONLY: SECKFORD THEATRE 7:30PM Please come and enjoy with usYear 8’s ‘live’ comedy radio show! The action is set at Woodbridge School in 1940 on the brink of an invasion during WW2. Things are bad enough, but then there’s a rumour that the School faces an inspection… Please note this is a ‘one night only’ treat. We apologise for the incorrect inclusion in the calendar of a second performance the following night. All welcome, no tickets required. SPORT ATHLETICS TRIUMPHS Many congratulations to our junior (Years7 & 8) and intermediate (Years 9 & 10) teams on their successes in the ESAA English Schools’ Track and Field Cup at Bury St Edmunds. Woodbridge School dominated the day, competing against ten other schools. Teams comprise the best dozen or so pupils in each group for boys and girls, with competitors taking two events each to cover all the events between them. Distances and times gain points, with the team scoring the most points qualifying for the next round. It was fantastic news, then, that our strong unbeaten junior girls’ team won with a total 371 points, Amy Graham scored 55 of these points on her own with 2:32 in 800m and 30m in javelin. Younger sister Sophie scored a further 45 points with 14.2s in hurdles and 26.50m in javelin. Sarah Barker scored 22 points for her super 1500m run in 5:21 and a PB in high jump. The Junior boys also won scoring 304 points. Alex Weir-Simmons was top scorer with 39 points thanks to his 300m in 45.0s and discus throw of 24.43m.Year 7 Daniel Norman was close on his heels with 36 points with 29.2s in 200m and 30.63m in javelin. Oliver Juszt scored 22 points for his throw of 10.71m in shot. The intermediate girls finished a creditable third with 297 points. It was a young team, most being Year 9, and a team further beset by injury and illness. Rosa McInerney followed her success from last week and selection for the Suffolk team with 38 points scored 1.47m high jump and 14.0s in the hurdles. Georgia Harrold, returning from injury, scored 23 points for her 100m in 13.3s, while Amelia Brown scored 21 points in discus. The intermediate boys finished one better in second with 369 points and will have to wait to see if they have qualified as it depends on the scores from the other first round meet. Abraham Hew scored 45 points with 5.12m in long jump and 25.0s in 200m, and then team mate Felix Kibble stormed in with 24.9s in the next 200m race to show our strength in depth. Oliver Whiting ran a 300m in 41.0s, Henry Bellhouse threw 11.52m in the shot and Theo Lindsay-Smith leapt to a triple jump of 10.29m.Well done one and all – great team efforts! Meanwhile, a few days before, 16 pupils went to the County Track and Field Championships in Bury, seeking personal bests or qualification for the Suffolk team. All performed excellently, five pupils particularly as they secured places in the Suffolk team to compete in June: Rosa McInerney jumped 1.50m in high jump, coming second to a club athlete who cleared 1.55m; Oscar Butcher also came second with 1.55m in the high jump; Sarah Barker ran a very good 1500m coming second in 5:33; Amy Graham won the 800m in 2:33; and Laura Graham came first in the javelin with a throw of 35.48m and a close second in discus with a throw of 28.15m. Maddie Craig in the hurdles and Chloe Outen in the long jump came agonisingly close to joining them, and on another day may well have qualified too. Well done, though, to all 16. ROUNDERS The U14A rounders v St Joseph’s match was a real nail biter and, given it transpired our girls were up against St Joesph’s Year 10s, the victory was all the sweeter for it! Great rounders were scored by Flora Johnston, Mollie Biddle, Harriet Spence and Zara Lye, and crucial half rounders by many others. Add to that some great fielding by Millie Cave (on 4th post), Mia King, Mollie and Harriet and all the girls can be proud of their performances; moreover their support of each other is a great example to other schools. And the score? We won 14½-12½! Wspa Alerts MIDSUMMER’S NIGHT GARDEN PARTY A wonderful summer evening with the sound of soft jazz, a glass of Pimm’s and great company (without the children!).
