NEWCOURSE DividedCity/UnitedCityINI339H Winterterm,Tuesdays,1amtonoon,JanuarytoApril,2017.InnisTownHall.3rd/4thyearstudents Professor:JDavidHulchanski,PhD DividedCity/UnitedCityfocusesontheimpactofincreasedeconomicinequalityandtheresultingsocio-spatialpolarizationtrendsthatare reshapingthesociallandscapeofCanada’smetropolitanareas,changingneighbourhoods,andaffectingthelivedrealitiesofanincreasingly diverseurbanpopulation.Theaimistobringintotheclassroomthelatestresearchonkeyurbanissueswiththeopportunitytodiscussthe researchprocessandfindingswiththeresearchersthemselves. ThecourseisinpartbasedonanddrawsfromtheresearchcurrentlybeingcarriedoutbytheNeighbourhoodChangeResearchPartnershipbased attheUniversityofTorontofundedbytheSocialSciencesandHumanitiesResearchCouncilofCanadasince2005.Thisresearchhelpedinspirethe TorontoStar’sDividedCity/UnitedCityseriesofarticles(fromwhichthenameofthiscourseistaken). Thecourseexaminesinequality,diversity,andchangeattheneighbourhoodlevelinCanada’smetropolitanareas,withanin-depth focusonTorontoasacaseexample.Wediscussthetrendsandseektoexplaintheprocessescausingthetrends,aswellasthe consequencesandtheirimplicationsforpublicpoliciesandprograms.Manyofthesetrendsandprocessescontributetosegregation anddisadvantageonthebasisofage,gender,race,ethnicity,Aboriginalidentity,andimmigrationstatus. Theaimofthecourseistoprovidethelatestresearchfindingsandpolicyimplicationsaboutthemajorsocio-spatialchangesaffecting metropolitanareas,inparticularthe: • natureandcausesofneighbourhoodrestructuringtrendsandprocesses,bothsocialandphysical; • humanandurbanconsequencesofsocio-spatialincomeinequalityandpolarization; • policyandprogramresponses(orthelackofthem)atalllevelsofgovernment;and • developmentofnewormoreeffectivepoliciesandprograms.
