ALTRUSA INTERNATIONAL OF CORVALLIS, OREGON PO BOX 1573 CORVALLIS, OR 97339 Email: [email protected] December 2013 A L T R U S A A C C E N T The holiday season is upon us with all the bustle of activities that come along with it. Plans are set for the Altrusa International Inc. of Corvallis Business meeting and Holiday party on December 4th at the Holiday Inn Express at 5:30 p.m. As part of our new meeting format we are visiting different meeting spaces and utilizing various caterers during this Altrusa year of 2013-2014. While we have enjoyed many years meeting at the Corvallis Country Club for our noon time meetings, we members decided to mix things up this year. So the move was made to an evening meeting that includes some social time and invitations to possible members who can’t get away for a noon meeting. So far everyone seems to like the opportunity to visit before we start our business meeting. We even had an interested young lady join us because of our Facebook page. I know the Membership committee of Carolyn Powers, Carla Allen and Bettina Schempf have worked very hard to find affordable options for us as we try to use the ‘Power of One’ to bring in new members. The Pecan fundraiser for our operating expenses has begun. This year our chair of the Pecan committee, Julie Livingston, was able to leave town on a well deserved vacation just after ordering the pecans. Being the efficient organization we are, Helen Kupeli, Jeannette Maier, Sharon Emenegger and Tammy Skubinna stepped in to help get the pecans out of Julie’s office and into Seriously Sassy and the Hair Palace beauty salons. Those members that pre-ordered in November should have their orders delivered by now. Those of you that didn’t place your order last month, please contact Julie or Helen. We have been invited to attend the Dec. 10th Altrusa International Inc. of Albany Holiday party with the offer to sell our pecans to their members. Anyone interested in attending please contact me. Once again it is again with heavy heart that I announce the passing of another of our dear friends and Altrusa members. Molly Bloomfield passed away on Sunday, November 24th after a very long and challenging battle with cancer. Molly was a very special lady, a dedicated golfer and true friend to many members. Please keep Molly’s family and friends in your prayers. This time of year brings many emotions into our lives. My hope is that all of you will recall the fond memories of holidays and friends past while also enjoying the treasured moments of the people in your present. We all have a purpose while here on this planet. May it be one that brings love, joy and friendship to all you meet. Because you are the ‘Power of One.’ Yours in Altrusa, Kristy Pribyl INDEX Page 1 Presidents Message Page 2 Business Meeting Minutes Page 3 Board Meeting Minutes Page 4 Points of Interest Page 1 Page 5 Special Memories / Latest on Our Ladies Page 6 Latest on Our Ladies / Dates to Remember A LT R U S A M I N U T E S Officers President Kristy Pribyl 541-753-1603 (W) [email protected] President-Elect Helen Küpeli 541-753-4468 (H) [email protected] Vice President Carolyn Powers 541-207-3556 (H) [email protected] Secretary Priscilla Greig 541-967-0345 (H) [email protected] Treasurers Operations Karen Grant 541-745-7979 (H) [email protected] Foundation/Service Bettina Schempf 541-207-3054 (H) [email protected] Directors Carla Allen Julie Livingston Mary Lou McLocklin Past President Elizabeth Groner Newsletter Karen French [email protected] Evelyne Hendrix [email protected] Business Meeting: Nov. 6, 2013’ Corvallis Country Club, . Board meeting minutes will have to wait until next month. See you then. Santa’s Helper Page 3 POINTS OF INTEREST Pecans and Pizza Party Tickets are Here! Holiday Party donation for College Hill It was suggested at the November 20th board of director meeting that the pecans and Pizza Party tickets be made available at our December 4th Business meeting/Holiday party. So please plan on bringing a little extra cash to purchase this year’s crop of fresh pecans. The supplier, Mascot Nut, is selling these gems at a sizeable profit to the Chinese market. They are considered a delicacy even in the Orient. So supplies are limited! And you might as well get some early Christmas shopping done by purchasing Pizza Party coupons for our February 25th fundraiser at Woodstock Pizza. Carolee Woodstock refunds all coupons turned in during that day back to Altrusa International, Inc. of Corvallis. For more information about this fundraiser contact Priscilla Greig. Just a reminder that we agreed at our November business meeting that the recipient for this year’s Holiday Party giving recipient will be College Hill High School. Below is the email request we received from the school’s staff. Please bring your donated items to the Holiday Party. If you are unable to attend the Holiday Party and wish to donate please leave your donation at the home of Bettina Schempf before Dec. 4th. She is also taking donation at her office at Old Mill Center for Children & Families. Bettina will deliver the donated items after our Holiday Party. And thank you as we try to support the students from this alternative high school. New Magazine Rack Chair The board of directors of Altrusa International, Inc. of Corvallis wants to thank one of our newest members, Cecily Feudo, for volunteering to fill the void left by the passing of Bev McNeil earlier this year as our chair for the Magazine Rack fundraiser. A new lock was purchased and installed as we were not able to locate the original keys. Cecily will be checking the rack and giving us an update on the need for replacement magazines. So remember to save your old magazines to replenish the magazine rack at the bus depot. Please bring them to the January 8th Altrusa Business meeting. Dear Altrusa members, We are putting together a Christmas gift bag for our students at College Hill and wondering if your group would be willing to donate items to make these bags for our students. We have 98 students this year and would like items to put in the gift bags ( a pair of socks, water bottle, gum, granola bars, roll of mints, chap stick, microwave popcorn, hot choc packs, Gatorade, small bag of chips, Pringles, etc). Our dream is to have a $10 gift card to Fred Meyer or Grocery Outlet for each student as well. Debbie Zuidema College Hill 542-757-8075 Baubles, Bangles and Beads Update. Janet Magedanz ,Tammy Skubinna and committee members are hard at work getting the ground work laid for this new Spring fundraiser. So as you meet up with relatives and friends over the Holiday, ask if they have any jewelry they would like to donate for this event. It’s amazing how many ladies will say, “Why yes I do have some jewelry that I didn’t know what to do with.” Again it is amazing what the ‘Power of One’ question will generate. Page 4 SPECIAL MEMORIES Thoughts of Molly Bloomfield. As many of you know Molly Bloomfield has been battling melanoma cancer for many, many years. She tried every new treatment and opportunity that she was offered to try to combat this terrible disease. Unfortunately the cancer moved into her brain. Molly left us on Sunday, November 24th. Her dear friend and fellow Altrusan Lynda Warren along with her daughter, Becca Davis, have kept us informed of Molly’s last weeks. Molly recently moved to Portland to be nearer to her family. Lynda emailed Becca’s mailing address to members recently. If you did not receive that email and would like to send a card please let me know. Below are some of the comments we’ve received as of November 27th about the impact Molly had. We will miss her! Kristy Pribyl I met Molly through 4-H, when she was a 4-H Horse Club leader. Both her kids (Becca & Jonathan) were in 4-H. Molly invited me to lunch and told me all about Altrusa. She was very passionate about the organization and, of course, I joined in 1986. Ever since then Molly has been an inspiration to me and to all of us in Altrusa. When Molly was Altrusa President (1988-89) she was a great leader. The lasting impact she made on our club was to change the way we handled our funds and budget. She suggested we base our service budget on the funds we made the previous year, not the current year. We have been doing that ever since and we have been solvent since then. Most of all I will remember Molly as a gracious, brilliant, kind, positive woman who touched all the people she met. She always looked to make things better for our Altrusa club, her profession, her family and her friends. Her courageous fight against cancer was done with determination and grace. She will always be my role model for how to live life and face death. I will miss her. Tammy Skubinna “As the song says…”I can only Imagine”… Molly now knows … Praise God she is free and at Peace by His Grace.” Julie Livingston “Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers. Molly fought a long and courageous battle that resulted in her survival way beyond expectations for what was possible. She just never gave up. Her sister and I were laughing yesterday, through our tears, that we are certain Molly arrived at the pearly gates with a long To Do list so we pity the poor angel who first encountered her! Molly was an incredible person, and I shall miss her every day for the rest of my life.” Lynda Warren Molly’s celebration of life will be held on Sunday, December 15th from 5 to 7pm. It will be in Corvallis at the Chintimini Senior & Community Center at 2601 NW Tyler Ave., Corvallis, OR 97330 Borrowed photo from Molly’s facebook page. - Karen French “ L AT E S T O N O U R L A D I E S ” Tammy Skubinna and Dana Poling took another trip to Mexico, this time to Loreto to celebrate Tammy’s birthday in November. Their resort was on a beautiful bay that was also a nature preserve. They learned to paddle board and also used a glass bottom kayak to see colorful fish. It was great to enjoy perfect weather, nice people, the Sea of Cortez and the pool. Jeanette and Bill Maier were pleased to have their foster daughter Lola and her husband join them for Thanksgiving. Lola was 15 when they “adopted” her while they were living in Roseburg and she has continued to be part of their family. They now live in Nampa, Idaho with their daughter Storm, who graduated from high school this spring and is now working. Page 5 “ L AT E S T O N O U R L A D I E S ” Carolyn Powers was in Torrance, California with her son Matt and his family. She came to stay with her granddaughters while her son and his wife went to a business conference in Florida and then stayed on an extra week. She says that it was fun to be part of their lives, going to soccer games, music lessons, helping with homework etc. She also spent time on her computer with the other Altrusans from the membership committee conferring about the gala holiday meeting at the Holiday Inn on December 4. They have a fun evening planned and hope everyone will consider bringing at least one guest. It will be a good way to share Altrusa with prospective members. The cuisine furnished by Forks and Corks promises to be excellent, the entertainment delightful and all of the Altrusans in their holiday sparkle will give a great boost to the beginning of the holiday season. Bettina Schempf made her visit as First Vice Governor to the two Altrusa clubs in British Columbia earlier in October. She used public transport via train, bus, sky train and ferry for most of her trip. An unplanned missed connection in Vancouver B .C. on the way back added an overnight stay in a hostel and some time to tour the city. Ask her for details. Bardon Maginnis is avoiding the Holiday routine that Lupe and he followed, in hopes that it will make it easier to cope with the Holidays without her. He is going to Orange County, CA for Christmas and New Year where his two sisters and many relatives live. For Thanksgiving his daughter Amy and her Pat cooked dinner and fed eight. Bardon is gearing up to expand his CPA practice in 2014. 2013 has been an amazing transition year for him. He is thanking the Altrusans for helping him.
