SUM MER CAM PS at Christianne’s Lyceum of Literature & Art MA G IC ! M AK E Preschoolers to Young Adults June 26 to September 1, 2017 About Christianne’s Lyceum Christianne’s Lyceum is a centre that celebrates literature and art and puts it at the centre of family and community life. Through programs that emphasize making connections between literature and what’s going on in the outside world, the Lyceum encourages young people to see themselves as readers, writers and artists, as they engage with abstract ideas and reflect on their own place in society. Armed with these experiences, students begin to seek possibility and explore ways that they can use their voices and actions to participate in their communities. About Summer Camps at the Lyceum Our summer camps support children and youth as they engage in the process of making, discovering the joy of manipulating materials with their hands, transforming it to leave traces for others to decode. Join us to experience the thrill of watching words pile up on a blank sheet of paper, or invent imaginative worlds and dare to get lost in them. Our staff gently facilitate these creative endeavours, helping young people see their initial concepts of their stories or art projects come to fruition. We co-construct curriculum to recognize the partnership between teacher and learner. Lyceum staff listen carefully to students reactions and questions, and allow these to guide the direction of further investigations. This means the summer camp your child attends will take into account their interests and experiences, tailoring curriculum to meet, support and challenge them. At the end of each camp, we’ll send home a brief snapshot of our time together to let parents in on the magic we’ve conjured. Let’s get creating! What Makes Our Summer Camps Unique? • A focus on the process of making, and on valuing such making as a sustaining, life-long activity • Co-constructed curriculum which makes it possible to meet individual needs of participants • High-quality art materials • A welcoming, inspiring and spacious environment • The flexibility to meet children where they are and honour their • • • • individual timelines Outings that support camp inquiries Documentation, which is provided after each camp An emphasis on process over product Actual fairies Dr. Christianne Hayward, Ph.D Dr. Hayward is the primary architect and teacher of each summer camp. She brings more than thirty years of experience as an educator, storyteller, post-secondary school professor, teacher consultant and pioneer of community literary programs to every literary and creative investigation that evolves in our studio. As class sizes are capped at approximately twelve students, each young artist will have the chance to work closely with Dr. Hayward, with additional support from her staff of artists and writers, as well as two to three volunteers. Snack We provide a healthy snack for participants that includes rice crackers, cheese, a variety of fruit and water. We are able to accommodate for most allergies. The Lyceum is a peanut-free environment. Whenever possible, we try to have a picnic snack in a local park to bring our adventures outdoors. Age Restrictions Age restrictions for our programs are guidelines only. If your child is interested in a program that is aimed at a slightly older or slightly younger age group, please give us a call to discuss if this class would be a good fit for your child. He or she may be welcome to join us. They’re crawly. They’re fascinating — so fascinating that we set aside a week every summer to look closer. Each day we’ll share some of our favourite bug-related stories to engage your preschooler’s natural interest in the world of insects. Then, we’ll take trips into the outdoors where children will be encouraged to observe bugs closely, and safely capture some specimens for more in-depth investigation. These close encounters will become the inspiration for a mixed-media canvas to be constructed over the course of the week, celebrating the important role that bugs play in our urban ecosystem. This is a catch and release program. NOT a BOX June 26 to 29 (four afternoons) 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM S Ages: 3 to 5 S $190 + GST When is a box not a box? When it’s a spaceship, obviously. When it’s a castle, of course. When it’s ever-changing in the hands of a group of imaginative preschoolers. In this camp, we’ll look at the many things, large and small, that boxes can become with some basic art supplies and a whole lot of creativity. We’ll share stories about the transformative power of the imagination, including Not a Box by Antoinette Portis and Box by Rosaline Beourd Shaw and allow them to inspire our creations, pushing ourselves to explore new ways of thinking about something as basic as cardboard. As our ideas grow, so will the scope of our projects, until by the end of the week, we’ll be able to transform an ordinary box into something truly extraordinary. A Garden for You, A Garden for Me July 4 to 7 (four mornings) S 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Ages: 3 to 5 S $190 + GST There are so many reasons to plant a garden! They can be a source of food, a source of beauty, or a reason for community to come together. During this camp, we’ll explore some of the reasons people plant gardens, as well as some of the unexpected and unusual forms these gardens can take. Guided by a number of beautifully illustrated picture books, including Varmints by Helen Ward and Rose’s Garden by Peter H. Reynolds, we’ll also create our own unique gardens, including a garden in a large shell, a garden to share with the Lyceum’s neighbours and a tiny balcony garden to take home and enjoy all summer long. E ating Stories July 17 to 21 (five mornings) S 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Ages: 3 to 5 S $235 + GST Food brings us together through story — the stories we tell around the table, the stories of the people who prepare our food and the stories of the people who grow it. During this program, we’ll share a number of our favourite food picture books, and use them as a jumping off place for some food experiments of our own. Who makes Vancouver’s best bagels? Can food ever become art? Can you really make soup from a stone? Is it possible to turn a preschooler into a pizza? These and many other delicious questions will be answered in a program that will focus on having a sense of adventure when it comes to what you eat. (Ages 3 to 5) Wildlife in the City July 31 to August 4 (five mornings) S 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Ages: 3 to 5 S $235 + GST Have you ever thought about how many wild animals call Vancouver home? In this camp, we’ll explore the city through the eyes of the raccoons and birds, squirrels and skunks that make up our urban eco-system. We’ll share a number of picture books that detail some of the challenges these animals face to survive, and set up our own game camera to see if we can find any critters prowling through the Lyceum’s garden at night. We’ll use our discussions, stories and observations as the basis for a series of animal-friendly art projects, including teacup bird feeders and multi-media wildlife collages. The Secret Life of Stuffies August 8 to 11 (four mornings) Ages: 3 to 5 S S 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM $190 + GST Do your stuffies come alive at night and have marvellous adventures while you sleep? We’re pretty sure that the Lyceum’s stuffies do, and during this camp, we’re hoping a group of preschoolers can help us come up with a plan to find out a bit more about about these after-dark escapades. To help us in our quest, we’ll read some of our favourite picture books featuring stuffies, including Bun Ban Button by Patricia Polacco and Red Ted and the Lost Things by Michael Rosen. We’ll also spend time creating accessories for our stuffies, including clothing items, backpacks and disguise masks. That way, no matter what our stuffies get up to while we sleep, they’ll be well-equipped, well-prepared and ridiculously fashionable. Celebrating Friendship August 14 to 18 (five mornings) S 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Ages: 3 to 5 S $235 + GST Join us this August for a week devoted to exploring the life-changing magic of friendship. How do we make friends? How do we keep them? Are there people in our lives who could use a friend that we could help? As we explore the Lyceum’s vast collection of picture books about friendship, we’ll answer these questions, and many others. We’ll also create beautiful pieces of friendly art as we go along, including friendship bracelets and friend art profiles. The Art of Spott i n g Patterns August 28 to September 1 (five mornings) 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM S Ages: 3 to 5 S $235 + GST Patterns are all around us. They tower above us as high rise windows. They bloom in garden plots. They appear under our feet in carpets and interlocking brick paths. In this camp, we’ll practice the art of spotting patterns, while we use some of the Lyceum’s favourite activities to create no end of patterns of our own. We’ll create patterns with food, in mosaic tile, with beads, and on beautiful collages. As we go, we’ll share a number of stories that use patterns, either in their illustrations, or in their language. This camp offers preschoolers a wonderful opportunity to try a variety of different art media. Beautiful Words Camps for Primary Students July 4 to 7 (four afternoons) helium S 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM r spe whi pterodacty l Ages: 5 to 9 S $190 + GST The foundation of beautiful writing? Beautiful words, of course! Over the course of four days we’ll take on the task of collecting beautiful words. We’ll venture out into our neighbourhood to see what words we can find, go on a word treasure hunt at a local park and invent some much-needed words of our own. Then, we’ll use the words we’ve collected and invented in a plethora (great word, right?) of writing and art projects — everything from word charm bracelets to haikus! What constitutes a beautiful word? That’s up to you, but here are some that we like: whisper, helium, pterodactyl. The Secret Garden S July 10 to 14 (five full days) Ages: 5 to 12 S 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM S $465 + GST Want to immerse yourself in a classic work of children’s literature, plant a secret garden in Kitsilano and discover the joy of watching something you’ve tended grow? More information in the Intermediate section. Magical Fairy Lands: A Brief Introduction July 17 to 21 (five afternoons) S 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM Ages: 5 to 9 S $235 + GST For one week in July, Vancouver’s preeminent fairy anthropologist, Dr. Christianne Hayward, will lead a group of young fairy experts on a magical field research expedition. With the goal of better understanding fairy society, the group will explore some of the places in our community where fairy activity has been reported and delve into the fairy tales and folklore that has been passed down to us from fairy researchers of previous generations. Taking what we learn, we’ll fashion intricate miniature fairy scenes in glass globes — the perfect way to let fairies know that your home is a safe and welcoming place for them to touch down as they fly throughout the Lower Mainland this summer. At the end of camp, we’ll celebrate our (no doubt vast) contributions to the burgeoning field of Fairy Studies with one of the Lyceum’s famous fairy teas. Community Art July 24 to 28 (five mornings) S 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Ages: 5 to 9 S $235 + GST What can we do to make Kitsilano more beautiful? In this camp we’ll approach this difficult question with paintbrushes in hand, setting out into the neighbourhood around the Lyceum to create works of public art. From murals to Andy Goldsworthy-inspired site-specific installations, we’ll look at the ways that art can make the ordinary extraordinary, and work together to make something truly amazing for our truly amazing community! Journaling & Drawing Our Way Through the Neighbourhood July 24 to 28 (five afternoons) S 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM S Ages: 5 to 12 S $235 + GST What makes a community? Find out by joining us for this writing and drawing camp. More information in the Intermediate section. Inventing Art July 31 to August 4 (five afternoons) (Ages 5 to 9) S 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM Ages: 5 to 9 S $235 + GST One of our favourite words at the Lyceum is possibilities. When presented with a pile of second-hand appliances, toys and knick-knacks, what possibilities will our young artists see? What amazing things will they make? We’ll look at some of the amazing found object sculptures that are being created by artists around the world, and some of the important messages they convey. As we embark on our own artistic journeys, we’ll be supported by the Lyceum’s vast collection of art materials, and some truly astounding literature, in particular the work of Shaun Tan. You know what word goes really well with possibilities? Endless. Gnomes August 8 to 11 (four afternoons) 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM S Ages: 5 to 9 S $190 + GST For the past three summers, we have struck up a relationship with a small group of gnomes that live in Pacific Spirit Park. From them, we have learned a bit more about the lives of these fascinating protectors of the forest. To further cement our relationship, we plan to create a series of free stores — places where gnomes can go to collect items to aid them in their woodland care taking. During this camp, you will create your own small free store, and stock it with everything form tiny maps to minuscule bowls, fire starters to button paintings. At the end of the week, each camper will take their store home and set it up in a bedroom or garden, creating a city-wide support system for our gnome friends as they continue their important ecological work. A Forest Fairy Village August 14 to 18 (five afternoons) S 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM S Ages: 5 to 9 S $235 + GST We’ve partnered with a very special 8-year-old in our community to create this camp for those looking to bring a touch of magic to their summers. Over the course of the week, we’ll be delving into the diverse and wondrous world of the fey — learning a bit more about the fairies, gnomes and pixies that make their home in nearby Pacific Spirit Park. As we go, we’ll be creating a village for these creatures from natural materials, working together in teams to make elaborate structures, and fill them with intricate furniture, and tasty fairy-sized morsels. With dwellings complete we’ll take them to the park, where we’ll photograph them in detail before sprinkling them with Attracting Dust and leaving them to be discovered. Harry Potter August 21 to 25 (five full days) S 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM Ages: 5 to 12 S $465 + GST We solemnly swear that we are up to no good. Find out more in the Intermediate section. Found: Art, Poetry & Geocaching August 28 to September 1 (five afternoons) S 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM Ages: 5 to 9 S $235 + GST This city is full of treasure, if you just know how to look for it. And look we will! We’ll look around our homes and neighbourhood to find objects that we can turn into beautiful works of art. We’ll look in books and magazines to see whether they might contain hidden poems and images. We’ll also go out into our community and hunt for geocaches — adding our names to the lists of other treasure hunters who have found them before us. Finally, we’ll create a geocache of our own, filling it with treasure of our own making for others to find. During our week together, we’ll try to capture some of the magic that Mary discovered in tending to the soil, watching plants grow and finding beauty in unexpected places. We’ll find the hidden growing spots in our community, and take ownership of one of them for a week, creating our own secret garden. Not only will we tend this bit of land, and fill it with colourful flowers and mosses, we’ll also add our own magical touches, including mosaic tiled stones and places to sit and watch the world go by. We’ll also spend time reading The Secret Garden, getting to know Mary, Colin and Dickon and their just-coming-to-life surroundings. At the end of the week, students will take what they have learned and create their own balcony garden to take home — a reminder that, as Mary says, “If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden.” Teas, Treats & Crafts: A Camp for Youth & Their Parents July 10 to 14 (five evenings) S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM S $260 + GST Spend a special week creating art with a parent. More info in the Teen section. Journaling & Drawing Our Way Through the Neighbourhood July 24 to 28 (five afternoons) S 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM S Ages: 5 to 12 S $235 + GST What makes a community? Each student will be given a journal to write and sketch in as we journey around our neighbourhood and chronicle meaningful landmarks. We’ll visit local entrepreneurs to learn a little of the history of their business, documenting as we go. Even if you live far away, getting to know one urban district sets the base for learning about others. We hope that this camp will help students develop a keen eye for observing both the ordinary and unusual. Those who have enjoyed this workshop in the past may wish to take it again as we’ll be visiting a number of new locations this year. Comic Camp August 8 to 11 (four evenings) Ages: 9 to 12 S (Ages 9 to 12) S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $190 + GST Calling all doodlers, illustrators and visual storytellers! Join us at the Lyceum for four evenings of comic mayhem! Each night, you’ll be presented with a unique comic drawing challenge and then given the materials you’ll need to complete it with flair. We’ll move from single strip comics to longer comic zines, being sure to discuss everything from point of view to gutter placing to capturing the passage of time as we go. Along the way, our efforts will be supported by the Lyceum’s extraordinary collection of comics and graphic novels. Art in the Great Outdoors August 14 to 18 (five evenings) Ages: 9 to 18 S S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $235 + GST Take your paintbrush outdoors! Find out more in the Teen section. Harry Potter August 21 to 25 (five full days) Ages: 5 to 12 S S 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM $465 + GST Have you been hearing the pitter-patter of elf feet in our mezzanine? The low moan of a ghost in our bathroom? Wait...did that picture just move? If you’ve always dreamed of the day you would get your letter from Hogwarts, now’s your chance. For one week this August, we’ll use our imaginations to transform the Lyceum into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In the course of the week, we’ll pack in as many Harry Potter-themed activities as is humanly (wizardly?) possible. We’ll visit Snape’s potion class to create fabulous fizzing concoctions. We’ll decorate our own brooms, which we’ll then use to play a game of Quidditch at a nearby park. We’ll read favourite selections from the book and visit Honeyduke’s Sweetshop. Our Harry Potter crafts are nothing short of magical, and we have a ton of new ones planned for this week! Basically, we’ll need a time turner to pack all the fun into just one week! Please imagine this information came to you by owl. Mischief managed. Writing Outside the Lines August 21 to 25 (five evenings) Ages: 9 to 12 S S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $235 + GST In this writers’ workshop for intermediate students, we’ll look at some of the many techniques that writers use to turn blank pages into unique works of art. We’ll focus on letting go of the ‘rules’ of writing so that we can play with words and ideas without stressing about what they mean, or what anyone else will say. Writing provocations will be offered to get pens flowing, writing by published authors will be read for inspiration and ideas will be aired in group discussion, By the end of the workshop, each writer will publish a pamphlet of his or her own writing complete with beautiful illustrations. On the final day of camp, we’ll invite parents to join us for the final half hour to hear a selection of our new creations. Teen Camps Teas, Treats and Crafts: A Camp for Youth and Their Parents July 10 to 14 (five evenings) S Ages: 9 and up S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $260 per pair + GST Youth and their parents are invited to join us for a special week dedicated to spending time together. We’ll be mixing our own tea blends, learning to make some delicious treats, and trying out all of the Lyceum’s best art materials. Always wanted to paint a teapot? Lose yourself in collage materials? Create a stunning necklace? This is the week for you. Bring an openness to new experiences and we’ll provide the relaxed environment for you to get making. The artistically challenged are most welcome — we guarantee that you’ll have fun (and the support to create something you can both be proud of!) Social Media Art July 17 to 21 (five evenings) Ages: 12 to 18 S S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $235 + GST Have you ever thought of how many incredible pictures you’ve taken for Instagram? In in this workshop we’re inviting teens to join us to celebrate the creative impulses that underly so much of our online life, creating art from, and for social media. We’re slightly old when it comes to the Internet, but we do know a lot about making art, so we’re proposing a collaboration. You bring your phones and we’ll bring the entirety of the Lyceum’s art supplies, and our abilities as facilitators and champions of the creative process. Then, we’ll work together to create some truly beautiful things. Coasters and magnets from Instagram photos? Visual poems? Video stories? The possibilities are endless, (and we heart them all). Craftivism July 24 to 28 (five evenings) Ages: 12 to 18 S S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $235 + GST In this camp, we’ll be looking at the ways that craft can be employed to make our voices stronger and help us in our quest for justice. We’ll look at the many ways people have used traditional crafts — everything from knitting to weaving, cross-stitching to felting — to amplify their message and get it out into the world. Then, we’ll choose a topic we feel passionately about and plan our own crafted installation which we’ll unleash onto our community on the final day of camp. Covert Publishing July 31 to August 4 (five evenings) Ages: 12 to 18 S (Ages 12 to 18) S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $235 + GST In this camp, we’ll look at the many creative ways that authors are finding an audience. From pamphlets to short films, roadside writing stands to poetry boxing matches, we’ll take inspiration from Canada’s vibrant small press scene to vision and enact our own covert and out-of-the-ordinary publishing projects. Along the way, we’ll put aside time to write, talk about the energy inherent in collaboration and make some some truly beautiful publications. Let’s get your writing into the hands of your readers! Art in the Great Outdoors August 14 to 18 (five evenings) Ages: 9 to 18 S S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $235 + GST Joining the tradition of Tom Thomson, Emily Carr and the Group of Seven, we’ll take our sketchbooks, drawing pencils, and paints out of doors this week. Using stories about these artists to ground our work in the rich tradition of Canadian art, we’ll draw inspiration from Mother Nature’s paintbrush and create our own moving lines and unique colour palettes. We’ll also disrupt realistic landscapes by twisting colour, shape and orientation to please our own aesthetics. Essays, But Fun Ages: 12 to 18 S Essays b ut fun es says but fun e ssays bu t fun essa ys but fu n essays bu t fun ess ays August 28 to September 1 (five evenings) S 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $235 + GST Just before school starts up again, the Lyceum offers to take teens through the art of essay writing. We’ll walk you through it step by step, providing you with no-fail techniques for tackling any essay that might be thrown your way. Using the strangest topics you’ll ever come across, we’ll write two essays in the course of the workshop, giving you the chance to try out everything you’ve learned and receive one-on-one feedback from Lyceum staff.
