Newsletter:2014, No. 2 http://www.aoapo.org/Default.aspx The 4th Asia Oceania Agricultural Proteomics Organization Council Meeting The 4th Asia Oceania Agricultural Proteomics Organization (AOAPO) council meeting was held in the city of Harbin, China on June 24th, 2014 during the period of the 6th International Symposium on Frontiers in Agriculture Proteome Research (FAPR). It was organized by Prof. Setsuko Komatsu, the president of AOAPO. Nine council members from eight countries, including China, Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Pakistan and South Korea, and three invitees attended this meeting. The council members discussed about the FAPR, including the places and time for the next two, and changes on its title. Prof. Sun Hee Woo from South Korea presented some information about the 7th International Symposium on FAPR. They proposed to hold this symposium in July or August 2015, in the city of Daejeo, South Korea. Prof. Subhra Chakraborty from India introduced something about the 8th International Symposium on FAPR, which will be held in December 2016 in India. All the Council members agreed to keep the name still as 7th and 8th International Symposium on FAPR, meanwhile, the 2nd and 3rd AOAPO conference will be used. After that, the conference name will be changed into AOAPO Conference solely. The attendees also discussed and confirmed the newly nominated council members. They are Profs. Boxiong Zhong (China, Insect), Lal Chand Rai (India, Microorganism), and JongSoon Choi (South Korea, Microorganism). Council members decided to have a join review paper on Agricultural Proteomics in 2015. The potential title will be “Crop Proteomics in Asia and Oceania region: current status and future perspective”. The president of AOAPO will lead the review paper and contact authors to contribute in manuscript. The goal of this conference was to promote the development of proteome research in agricultural and plant biology areas and to enhance communication and cooperation between the members of the international plant proteomics community. The conference was primarily organized by AOAPO, the Chinese Society for Cell Biology and the Heilongjiang Province Proteomics and hosted by Heilongjiang University, the Hereditary Tree Breeding State Key laboratory from Northeast Forestry University and Qiqihar University. The corporate sponsors of the conference included the Wuxianfeng Scientific Corporation in Harbin, Thermo Fisher Scientific, GE, and AB SCIEX. The conference was a big success with over 200 participants from China and overseas including the US, Japan, Australia, India, South Korea, Parkistan and Saudi Arabia. It has also invited world leading scientists in plant and agricultural proteomics areas to present how the fast advancing proteomics technologies are applied to solving important agricultural and plant biology problems. The topics including plant signaling proteomics, posttranslational modification proteomics, developmental and organelle proteomics, stress proteomics, and agricultural and GMO proteomics. In addition to leading scientists including national academy members from different countries, scientists from Asia and all over the world who worked on the related areas have enjoyed attending this important conference in the beautiful city of Harbin. The attraction for the budding proteomics leaders was the “Best Poster” and “Best presentation” Awards. Finally, there was the announcement of the 2015 meeting in South Korea. Around 1200 participants from various scientific disciplines, including Human and non-human field attended the conference. Of which approximately 200 participants were from Asia and Oceania region. It was inaugurated by the Congress Co-Chairs Profs. Concha Gill, Fernando J. Corrales, and Juan Calvete with their opening remarks and tribute to Prof. Juan Pablo Albar. Two keynote talks were delivered by Profs. Tom L. Blundell and Mathias Uhlen during the inaugural session in the area of human multiprotein assemblies and human protein atlas, respectively. The conference was attended by leading scientists in the field from across the globe. Their presentations showed how the fast advancing proteomics research and technologies are applied to solve important issues related to human health. The lectures delivered during the conference covered various areas, including Human and Non-human proteomics and could be broadly categorized under Human Plasma Proteomics, Disease Proteomics, Liver Proteomics, Proteomics of metabolic disorders Organeller Proteomics, Phosphoproteomics, Proteogenomics, New Trends in Biomarker Discovery, Immunobiology and Cell Signaling, Redox Proteomics, Interactomics and Computational Proteomics, Model organism (iMOP) Proteomics, Non-human/Food proteomics. The sessions on iMOP and Non-human/Food Proteomics focused on various facets of how the proteomics study of non-human organisms could contribute to the HUPO initiatives and in turn benefit the human life. There were lectures on plant, marine organism, and animal besides talks on food safety, linking of genome scale metabolic data with other omics data, different proteomics workflows and databases for the study of orphan species. From research field of the plant proteomics, Profs. Wolfram Weckwerth and Setsuko Komatsu lectured. Every day the morning session was devoted to the updates in the Human Proteome Initiatives in various directions. There were parallel sessions that included five plenary talks, more than hundred and fifty invited talks by leading national and international scientists in their respective field of research and luncheon Industry talks on new technology developments in mass spectrometry, omics data analyses and protein interaction studies. Besides the plenary lectures and invited talks, there were informal poster sessions and exhibitions by sponsors, which played a central role in vibrant discussions and exchange of scientific ideas amongst the students, researchers, and fellow colleagues. Organizers provided ample opportunity for everyone especially for students and young investigators to participate in this congress. Two sessions were devoted to the talks by EuPA and HUPO young investigators. The attraction for the budding proteomics leaders was the “Best Poster” and “Young investigators” Awards. The conference was a great success and it was brought to a close by vote of thanks to the organizers, and the announcement of the 2015 meeting in Canada. -3- Overall, it was impressing to observe the enthusiasm of young proteomics researchers and the positive attitude of the World proteomics community. This is encouraging as it serves the purpose and goal of HUPO. Nevertheless in comparison to human and animal proteomics, non-human proteomics including agriculture and plant proteomics has miles to go to usher in the benefits to the living world. The 14th HUPO congress will be hosted by Canadian National Proteomics Network in coordination with the BC Proteomics Network in Vancouver, Canada.
