Materials Needed: Newspaper Article Blank Paper for Daily Routine Thinking Map Model Computer/Projector Listening Activity Sheets Listening Activity Answers Instruction Handout Reflexive Verb Worksheet Objectives: The student will: 1. Demonstrate the ability to conjugate present tense reflexive verbs 2. Produce a sequenced timeline of their daily routines for use in a future assignment Opening Activities: 1) My Daily Routine: Students will start the class by making a sequence map of their daily routine starting with waking up. This should be done with a flow chart. In the top box the information should be in English. Underneath each box there should be a secondary box with words they would need in Spanish to write the routine as a complete sentence. If they can do it as a complete sentence that is great, but not required as this is more of a brain storming activity (Pre-Practice) Students will see the following example on the board when they arrive in class. Students may also use synonyms. My Daily Routine Wake Up Despertarse, Levantarse, Cama, Mañana, Temprano, Abrirse los Ojos, Malhumorado, Feliz Leave For Work Shower Ducharse, Lavarse, Limpiarse, Champú, Jabón, Agua, Caliente Teach Students Get Dressed Eat Breakfast Lesson Structure: Time Take roll visually 2 minutes Warm-up. Students will start immediately upon entering the classroom. They will produce a sequence (Flow) chart, following the example on the board. This is a good thinking activity, particularly for vocabulary recall. Students may even want to note in their notebooks the words they wanted but don’t know of the top of their heads. THIS WILL BE USED LATER TO DO A MOCK JOURNAL ENTRY IN CLASS!! STUDENTS NEED TO KEEP IT. 20 minutes Listening Activity 10 minutes Students will watch a Jack in the Box commercial. They will respond to the questions on the sheet given them. They will see the commercial 4 times. We will then correct it as a class Direct Instruction Students should have their Present Tense notes page which they received Tuesday. They will add on to these notes today giving examples of present tense reflexive verbs. 1) What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say “reflexive verb”? Some answers may include reflect, mirror, done to self etc. 2) Explain that anytime an action is done and can be followed by the following in English it is reflexive; Myself, Yourself, Himself, Herself, Ourselves, Themselves 3) Using a reflective verb is like looking into a mirror. Visualize a girl combing her hair: Where does she stand? In front of a mirror. Why? So she can see the action she is doing to herself. 4) Explain that reflexive verbs REQUIRE a reflexive pronoun and that this pronoun is going to come BEFORE the conjugate verb. Write the Reflexive Pronouns on the board: REFLEXIVE PROUNS ME NOS TE OS SE SE 5) Explain to the students that all reflexive verbs can also be used non-reflexively. Can you bath someone else? Can you shave someone else? Of course although it might not be a lot of fun. When we are talking about bathing ourselves then it is reflexive. Think of it this way. I bathe myself. Start by conjugating to bathe to the subject pronoun. Who is performing the bathing? I am. So what is the verb to bathe. BAÑAR, So conjugate it to yo; YO BAÑO. Now if I wanted to bathe mi son, then it would be YO 15 Minutes BAÑO A MI HIJO. However, If I was going to Bathe myself now it is reflexive. Now I go back to the reflexive pronoun chart and use the pronoun from the SAME box as the verb I conjugated. Thus I say YO ME BAÑO ASSESMENT 15 Minutes Students will conjugate 20 reflexive verbs on a worksheet. If they do not have enough time that can do it for homework. Correct the assignment *All assignments are modified as needed to meet each student’s individual limitations and/or abilities. Homework: Signed Permission Slips Prior to September 3 (Extra Credit) If Students do not complete the worksheet then it will be due at the beginning of the next class hour Assessment: -Warm-up *Sequence (Standards 1.2, 3.2): Students will demonstrate vocabulary recall from previous units while putting it into a meaningful format for future use -Worksheet (Covering reflexive present tense verbs) Unit test date/format:
