CÁDIZ
ADELAIDE
Having set sail on her epic Paciic tour in early
November 2015, Tenacious will be visiting old
friends in Antigua, passing through the Panama
Canal, navigating the Costa Rican coastline,
before sailing down to Australia via the tropical
islands of the South Paciic. There are only a
few berths remaining for these voyages (see
page 14 for details) so book now to avoid
disappointment. From August 2016, she will
spend 9 months operating out of Melbourne,
before returning to her home waters in the UK.
Upon her return to the UK, Lord Nelson will
commence a brand new Spring/Summer
programme. In this brochure, we are publishing
a select number of exciting voyages around
the UK, from Southampton to Pentland Firth,
and including the ever-popular Tall Ships
Races from Antwerp to Lisbon and onto Cádiz
and La Coruña. Over the next few months, we
will continue to release new voyages and day

VOYAGES
The Jubilee Sailing Trust is an international, United Nations accredited
disability charity, promoting integration through the challenge and
adventure of tall ship sailing. We provide life-changing adventures
to people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of physical ability. Over
the last 35 years, we’ve welcomed 45,000 crew members aboard our
two globally unique, custom built tall ships with over half having some
form of physical disability, including over 5,000 wheelchair users.
We change lives by improving self-esteem, building confidence, and
providing fantastic leadership and life skills.
A voyage with the JST is about joining in and getting involved with all aspects of sailing
the ship, regardless of your physical ability. Whether you are a tall ship enthusiast,
fair-weather sailor or complete beginner - we welcome everyone. Don’t worry if you
haven’t sailed before - most people step on board Lord Nelson or Tenacious with no
JST.ORG.UK
The food on board is plentiful and often praised. Our
professional cooks serve our crew three hearty meals a day
using the freshest local ingredients wherever we are in the
world, whether it is fresh ish haggled from isherman or fruit
and vegetables from local markets. They also bake cakes,
biscuits and scones for elevenses and afternoon tea (known as
‘Smoko’). If you are still peckish during your night watch, there
are always some ‘night rations’ to help you through! You’re
sure to never go hungry on a JST voyage.
A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE
On board you may be assigned a ‘buddy’. A buddy is another
crew member who will be your companion during the voyage,
and together you will learn how to sail the ship. We aim to
buddy everyone up into disabled and able-bodied pairs as this
integration lies at the heart of our mission. If you are sailing
alone, don’t worry! You will soon be part of the team as the
buddying and watch systems mean you will quickly create
strong bonds with your fellow voyage crew.

MAKING A
DIFFERENCE
It costs over £2 million every year to operate Lord Nelson and Tenacious (that’s the cost of
fuel, food, crew, insurance and maintenance). If that full cost was passed onto our voyage
crew, we would need to charge £200 per person per day to break even.
We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to sail with us - regardless of
physical limitations or inancial circumstance.
As a charity, we offer subsidised prices to those who need them, requesting a contribution
to the overall voyage cost.
We also have a bursary scheme for people who need additional inancial support.
BE THE WIND THAT KEEPS US SAILING
If you haven’t already, we would love you to join the amazing community of people whose
support really does change lives. Everyone can help keep our voyages affordable and

EXPANDING OUR HORIZONS
“The Jubilee Sailing Trust was founded to give everyone the opportunity to sail with
us, regardless of ability or background. Whilst the majority of our voyages cater for
the general public, we are now growing our mission to include exciting partnership
work with other charities and businesses. This allows us to expand the reach and
impact of our activities, attracting new voyage crews and reducing costs for our
beneficiaries. It also generates important income to help fund our core activities.
We are delighted to have already worked with partners including Barclays, VMware,
Alston Gayler and the Marine Society and Sea Cadets and look forward to building
new relationships with other organisations in time to come. Please get in touch if
you know of any organisation which may be interested in having a voyage with us.”

Nik’s Story
A voyage gave Nik the chance
to live rather than exist
Nik Royale was born with Progressive Cerebral Palsy, a rare
condition that only affects a handful of people in Europe. Nik
worked in the security industry from the age of 18, working as
a doorman, event steward and also a close protection oficer
looking after high proile VIPs and celebrities. At 29, Nik’s
Cerebral Palsy relapsed, meaning he was unable to work and
had to give up the job he loved so much.
“Not being able to work made me feel useless. It wasn’t just
due to my condition; I felt that society had written me off. At
quite a low point I found out about the Jubilee Sailing Trust
20 staff and
20 beneiciaries
came together
to make 1 crew
who joined
together to sail 1
unique tall ship
and share an
immeasurable
experience…
In the summer of 2015, 20 employees from Barclays fundraised for their berths on board
our unique tall ship Tenacious for a sailing experience they would never forget. The
Barclays Foundation match funded the staff’s costs to buddy each employee up with
a disabled crew member and give them the task to work together to help sail the ship.
They were forced outside their comfort zones, pushed to the limits of their personal
boundaries and in for an eye opening adventure of a lifetime!
CREW STORIES
through a friend and I booked my first voyage on Tenacious.
The voyage completely changed my life! Being on board is one
of the only places that I can live as an equal to everyone else
rather than just exist. People see me for me and not for my
disability. I cannot express how amazing that is.”
Nik, who hopes to continue sailing with the JST, says, “I
want go on more voyages and spread the word about the
JST. So many people in situations like mine can have their
lives changed. I am hoping to sail again and help the Jubilee
Sailing Trust in any way I can.”

FOLLOW IN COLUMBUS’ FOOTSTEPS
THE UNSUNG
The Canary Islands have been a popular stop-off for centuries, offering sailors a welcome a rest before they made their journey
across the Atlantic. Christopher Columbus himself is said to have paid a special visit to re-stock his three ships before he set sail
to discover America in 1492. It is no wonder – with the constant pull of the Atlantic swell and strong prevailing winds, the Canaries
offer a challenging but exhilarating playground for sailors. Although the rugged islands have little by way of a shoreline, there are
excellent marinas where ships are able to berth, allowing their crew to explore the many hidden treasures to be found ashore.

LA GOMERA
Join us aboard Lord Nelson as we venture
deep into the heart of this amazing
archipelago. Scattered just off the coast of
Africa, the Islas Canarias enjoy consistant
winds and are home to some of the
world’s best waters for sailing. Lunar-like
landscapes can be found on top of formerly
active volcanoes, whilst subtropical forests
nestle in the valleys below. These very
special islands are sure to win the hearts of
nature lovers and sailors alike…
AN ANCIENT TRADITION
GRAN CANARIA
LORD NELSON CANARIES ITINERARY
Lord Nelson will arrive just in time for carnival season! We
will be sailing into various ports to soak up some of the
festival atmosphere, including the world famous Fiesta de
Los Indianos (The Festival of the Indians) on the island of
La Palma. More widely known as the ‘White Party’, the event
celebrates those who emigrated to the Caribbean and South
America and returned after making their fortune. Festivalgoers are encouraged to dress in white to represent the wealth
that was brought back on return, and a grand procession takes
place through the streets whilst latin music is played. Everyone
then throws bags of talcum powder at each other during the
main event, the ‘Batalla de Polvos’ (The Battle of The Powder!).
We will then continue our voyage of discovery, calling into
Gran Canaria where you will get the chance to soak up the
atmosphere at the magniicent Las Palmas Carnival. Often
referred to as a cross between the New Orleans and Notting
Hill carnival, the celebration encourages guests to don their
most outrageous costumes and dazzling masks…especially for
the Drag Queen Gala! The theme for 2016 is ‘The Roaring 20s’
so be sure to have your feathers at the ready…

READY, SET, RACE!
After a sell-out race in 2015, Lord Nelson will be returning to
take part in the Tall Ships Races 2016. The Tall Ships Races
began in 1956 and were meant as a inal farewell to the world’s
last tall ships. However the event was hugely popular and
eventually transformed into an annual event, with races to all
corners of the globe and bringing with it millions of visitors.
The races are a great way to practice your sailing skills, make
new friends from around the world, and to immerse yourself in
the festival spirit in every port! This year’s festivities will start
in the cosmopolitan city of Antwerp, who have hosted the Tall
Ships Races four times. After enjoying the opening celebrations
including crew parties and a irework display by the quayside,
we will embark on Race 1; an exhilarating 16 day voyage across
the English Channel and through the infamous Bay of Biscay.
The inish line awaits in the port of Sines, Lisbon, who will greet

the leet for the seventh time since the races began.
Race 2 will see Lord Nelson participate in an exciting 7 day
voyage from Sines round to the historic port of Cádiz. Founded
as Gadir by the Phoenicians in about 1100 BC, there is a
deinite regal feel about this ancient city with its memorable
monuments and museums. After some time spent sightseeing,
the family of tall ships will Cruise-in-Company along the western
coast of Spain and Portugal until they reach the inal port of La
Coruña. La Coruña is no stranger to the Tall Ships Races and will
be welcoming the leet back for the 11th time - the most ever and will host this year’s closing ceremony.
With three fantastic voyages to choose from, don’t miss out on
your chance to get involved!

CREW STORIES
Tall Ships Regatta, Gothenberg, Sweden
Sat 3 Sep - Tue 6 Sep 2016
Hannah’s story
A voyage gave Hannah the
confidence boost she needed
Student Hannah Crowley joined Lord Nelson for the Tall Ships
Festival in Belfast in summer 2015, and then took part in the
Tall Ships Race from Belfast to Alesund in Norway. Having not
been away from home for so long before, Hannah was worried
about feeling homesick, but her nerves were all forgotten by
the time she set sail to Norway!
“It turned out that I was too busy making new friends and
getting involved in the activities to get homesick. I helped
to sail the ship, went on watch and even climbed aloft (a
big challenge for me as I’m terrified of heights!) and had an
amazing time exploring Alesund and joining the crew party and
parade. The voyage really helped me build confidence in social
situations. At the beginning I was quite shy and withdrawn
from the group but I learnt that life is much more fun if you
fully embrace everything!”
Hannah is already planning her next trip with the JST and says,
“This experience is one that I will never forget. I’ve come away
missing the crew an awful lot, and I’m already looking to book
another voyage! I feel much more prepared for my final years
at school and cannot wait to tell all my friends my stories from
the trip. I would recommend it to anyone.”

We are delighted to announce that the Jubilee Sailing Trust has officially established a presence in
Australia. Our new operation will be based in Melbourne and our expansion will build on the Sail the World
legacy, creating a new axis for international development and further opportunities to provide disabled
and able-bodied people with tall ship sailing adventures.
We have strong ties with Australia and supporters from the
region have already made a very signiicant fundraising
contribution to the Trust. Given this resounding success, it
was the obvious place to start our international expansion.
To mark this fantastic development, and to celebrate her 15th
anniversary, Tenacious will be visiting Australia as part of an
international tour that will see her visit some of the world’s
most exciting sailing destinations, including the Caribbean,
Panama Canal and South Paciic Islands, before arriving in
