The Administrator’s Note
Welcome, Oh Beautiful May!
I walk along the path as it gently meanders through the woods.
Daily this is my ritual for least a few moments, longer if I’m
lucky. After I have done this many times in the same area, I
begin to feel as though I know the place. Almost like I’m the
path’s monitor or guardian. The trick with this familiarity is to
not think that I have become
so fluent that I forget to slow
“...And for those wise
down and look deep into
woods and be aware of what enough to notice and learn,
is really going on. Over
they too will grow because
the past several weeks I
of your ever increasing
have seen the world go from
beauty and life.”
a landscape of old dead
leaves and brittle sticks
stuck in of the ground to a flurry of fresh, budding life
emanating from everywhere. And as you would expect, each
time that I return the tiny life has become larger and larger. The
growing never seems to end. What seemed in full bloom one
day
continues to develop even larger and more beautiful
with each succeeding pass. The growth is visible and
apparently never ending. Certainly, the same is true for us.
Even though our rate may not be as dramatic as the forest, it is
unrelenting all the same.

May
Therefore, despite the thought that you
may have at 80 or 90 or 100+ years
old of what is left to do or know, realize
that we never stop growing. We all
have it in us to become enhanced and
more beautiful as each day goes on.
Growing in wisdom, kindness, grace
and humility. Ever increasing in the
light that we shine on others. Steadily
becoming that apparent figure who will
be appreciated as an inspiration to
others. And for those wise enough to
notice and learn, they too will grow
because of your ever increasing
beauty and life.

Kathy’s Corner
The Story Of Kate
By Katherine Wismer
LPN DORC
In the last episode, Kate had been discharged from the
Emergency department after having a TIA or a mini stroke.
She was lucky no major damage was done and she can go
on with her life as usual. While she was in the hospital,
they took a lot of her blood for tests. Kate thought to herself, “I hated tests when I was in school and they don’t get
any better the older you get.” The doctor called her to discuss the results of the tests — that can never be good when
they call you. Well, first off she was anemic so here comes
a pill. Then, he noted her thyroid was slow and you
guessed it, it’s another pill to take first thing in the morning.
Last but not the least, he noted the clotting time of the blood
was slow, and she always thought she was thick headed
but no it was her blood! So another pill for that. But wait it
gets even better. Now, she has to go to the lab once a
week to have a PT/INR to measure the clotting time and
how much medicine she needs to take. Then the doctor,
who didn’t look old enough to shave, told her she need
more exercise. She thinks that means Rex and her will be
going for a daily walk. Kate’s daughter got her a life alert
pendant to wear in case she have fallen and can’t get up.
She is now also in the cell phone crowd. The phone has
big numbers that light up so she can see them and all emergency numbers are stored in. Now, Kate is all set to start a
new adventure with Rex by her side. See you next month.

Tokyo in Full Bloom

Japan may be famous for its cherry blossoms, but
springtime in Tokyo brings an abundance of other
flowers and flower festivals. By the end of April, many
of Japan’s cherry blossoms have already flowered,
but Tokyo’s city dwellers still have plenty of blooming
flowers to look forward to. The Nezu Shrine is a quiet
place for 11 months out of the year, but by the first
week in May, its 3,000 azalea plants burst into a
palette of bright colors. The Bunkyo Azalea Festival,
or Tsutsuji Matsuri, attracts thousands of visitors
during Golden Week, its busiest viewing week. The
300-year-old azalea garden is home to rare varieties,
such as the black karafune flower, and is complete
with a Shinto shrine, bridges running over streams,
traditional Toriii gates, and women dressed in their
best kimonos.
Across town is yet another sacred spot draped in
wondrous springtime color: the Kameido Tenjin
Shrine. This shrine is home to its famous trellises
boasting a sea of cascading purple wisteria vines.
The wisteria were planted 300 years ago when the
original temple was built. Visitors can stroll over the
shrine’s beautiful red bridge, spying darting koi and
lounging turtles in the pond. The wisteria are so alluring that old Japanese shoguns made pilgrimages to
visit the garden. Many of Japan’s most celebrated
artists have captured the garden’s scenic serenity in
color prints.
Perhaps the most celebrated of all flower festivals is
the Kyu Furukawa Garden Rose Festival. The
gardens, sprawled at the foot of a western-style
mansion, have been designated a national place of
scenic beauty. The roses hit their peak in May with a
dazzling array of colors and an intoxicating bouquet
of aromas. Over 90 rose varieties can be found, including Princess Michiko, a variety named for Japan’s
Empress, and Royal Princess, a variety offered as a
gift from France and named for Princess Aiko,
daughter of Japan’s Crown Prince and Princess.
