Telecentric lenses correct perspective errors that yield variations in magnification through the depth of field. The TECHSPEC® Silver Series lenses offer superior image quality and less distortion than conventional fixed focal length lenses. Our high quality optics, combined with a simplified non-focusing mechanical design, yield a more symmetrical image for superior software-integrated measurements while featuring adjustable iris control. primary magnification 4.0X 2.0X 1.0X 0.60X 0.50X 0.40X 0.30X 0.25X 0.20X 0.16X telecentric backlight illuminator Adjustable Aperture Allows Variable Output Without Varying Color Temperature Accepts Z\v” Fiber Optic or LED Input Increases Contrast on Product Edges for Inspection Systems Easy to Integrate The Telecentric Backlight Illuminator uses optics to direct light from a fiber optic light guide or LED onto an object, producing high contrast silhouette. The illuminator increases edge contrast and measurement accuracy in gauging applications by decreasing diffuse reflections that increase edge softening. The telecentric backlight illuminators, based on design principals from the Telecentric Measuring lenses, substantially increases illumination, compared to a standard backlight, at nominal working distances. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 1/09 Z\z.,” 1600x1200: Using telecentric lenses Perspective errors, also called parallax, are part of everyday human experience. In fact, this is what allows the brain to interpret the 3-D world. We expect closer objects to appear relatively larger than those placed farther away. This phenomenon is also present in conventional imaging systems in which the magnification of the object changes with its distance from the lens. Telecentric lenses optically correct for this occurrence so that objects remain the same perceived size independent of their location in space. A traditional lens’ perspective errors become more noticeable when dealing with such minute detail. In Image A above, we see a conventional lens viewing the jumper pins of a typical computer circuit board at a 45° angle. As clearly shown, the lens begins to introduce perspective errors and the angled pins begin to slant toward the center of the field-of-view. An observer analyzing the distances between these pins for alignment purposes would get errors in their calculations. Perspective error in this example is 3%, but can be much higher for other applications. Image B shows the same pins through a telecentric lens. In this captured image, the angled pins show their accurate distances and perspective errors are eliminated. With the use of a telecentric lens, correct and consistent distances can be determined and a higher degree of accuracy achieved. The reasoning behind this stems from a constant magnification that occurs as the distance from the lens changes. This allows the user to maintain the correct perspective over a change in height or a change in slope. Nominal Diameter An electronic imaging system is used to measure the diameter of metal posts, which can vary in height by as much as 25mm. The posts are placed in a mounting fixture and measured using the 0.5X Telecentric lens (#54-798). The IMAQ™ Vision Builder software is calibrated using our Concentric Square Target (#46248). Even though the objects are different heights, the software does not have to be recalibrated for each post under inspection. As long as the top of the post is within the telecentric working distance, the magnification is constant and the calibration file is valid. This saves valuable time in software set up. The measurements of two different posts, with known same diameter, were as follows: Diameter Tolerance Post 1 Post 2 An error of only 1 pixel is typical in electronic measurements made at the same object height – however, in this example the objects were at two different heights and the only thing that changed was the focus. The diameter difference of 0.03mm is well within the 0.1° telecentricity specification. USA | UK | France | Germany | Japan | Singapore | China | Korea | Italy Important tools for machine vision systems and metrology applications, telecentric lenses yield images from which precise measurements can techspec® GOLD series telecentric lenses be taken. We offer TECHSPEC® Gold Series Telecentric Lenses, for either X\c” or Z\x” format sensor sizes. The X\c” Format Series includes 5 lenses for use with either X\c” or smaller size sensors. The Z\x” Format Series includes 4 lenses for use with Z\x” or smaller size sensors. The new Z\x” series maximizes field coverage, matching the optimum field of view of the X\c” sensor and allowing for larger fields with smaller sensor formats. The Gold Series yield constant magnification over a defined depth of field and are optimized to provide <0.1°* telecentricity when used in the specified working distance range. Also within the specified working distance, the same magnification can be obtained simply by refocusing. Because maximum field of view in telecentric systems directly relates to the lens aperture closest to the object, larger front lenses are necessary for larger fields of view. All of our TECHSPEC® Gold Series Telecentric Lenses have a front filter thread for easy integration with color filters, polarizers, or other mounted components used for maching vision optimization.
