(Positive Behaviour for Learning)
This week during our weekly PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) lessons we are focussing on the topic:
Be responsible:
- Follow adult instructions straight away
- Be Active in class activities
Within the Dalby South community we continue to focus on the importance of good friendships and developing positive
relationships with others. The following information about friendships comes from KidsMatter.
Parents are children’s first and foremost teachers when it comes to relationships. The ways that parents relate to their children
and the guidance provided helps to develop children’s social skills. Parents can help children develop and maintain friendships
by modelling effective social skills, providing opportunities for children to practice interacting with others and offering support
when they go through difficulties. Taking the role of coach helps children learn the skills they need for themselves.
The following suggestions may be helpful:
Make time to play too- Parents can improve their children’s social skills by playing with them regularly.
Allow your child to try all sorts of different activities- Children who have a wide range of interests are more likely to have
something in common with others and so find it easier to make friends and get along.
Invite children for play dates- Having friends over to visit helps children to establish friendships and practise their social
skills. It also provides opportunities to provide ‘on the spot’ coaching for children as they develop their friendship skills.
Talk with children about what is happening for them with their friends- Find a relaxed time,
like the drive home from school or after dinner, to talk about what is happening in your child’s
friendship group.
Encourage positive, relevant strategies- Parents can talk about and encourage, friendly and
cooperative strategies that can help their child to develop friendships.
Take a problem-solving approach- Parents don’t need to have all the answers to all of their
children’s problems. You can support your children to think through a problem for themselves by
talking with them and asking some questions.
PE – Athletics
This term we have been hard at work developing the
fundamental skills of
running, jumping, and throwing to excel
at each athletic event. Preps classes are
busy participating in running and
throwing games, while the years 1-3 are
learning new ways to create force in their
throwing by using leg power, and have
been introduced to the shot put
technique. Years 4-6 are refining and
building upon skills in each event. So far
we have covered sprinting, shot put, and
long jump. This week we are excited to
be doing discus!
Round 1 LLI Celebrations
This week on parade we celebrated the successes of our 1st round of LLI students for 2017, who recently
graduated from the program. These students attended targeted, small-group reading lessons over an
11-week period to improve their word-attack skills, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Excellent results
were achieved by the students,
who gained on average almost 4
PM (reading) levels, and also
developed much confidence in
themselves as readers. Students
were awarded a certificate on
parade and shared a morning
tea afterwards with their proud
parents and LLI teachers. Great
job to all our LLI students! You
should be very pleased with your
efforts.
CREST Awards
Also on parade this week, our year 4 & 5
Enrichment students were presented with CREST
awards from the CSIRO. CREST stands for
CREativity in Science and Technology. Year 4
students were awarded a Green CREST award – for
completing both a science and technology project
around the topic of rocks and minerals. Meanwhile,
year 5 Enrichment students were awarded Blue
CREST awards for designing, conducting and
evaluating an open-ended science investigation with
real life application. Topics included “Which brand of
bubble gum blows the biggest bubble?” and “Which
chemicals will preserve cut flowers the longest?”.
Term 1 Perfect A endance Awards
Term One Perfect Attendance Awards were presented during this week’s
Parade. Seventy Dalby South students received these awards which celebrate
their attendance at school all day every day in Term One. A further 257 will
receive Excellent Attendance Awards which signifies a 95% attendance rate or
above. Every day counts! Congratulations to all these students.

Hi) is actually more of a festival for boys!! My grade 4 classes
were ecstatic to hear this news, particularly after I had them
making cut-out dolls for the girl’s festival (Hina Matsuri) on 3rd of
March (3/3). But what are these occasions all about you ask?
Great question!! In short, both festivals stem from parents’ desire
to see their children grow up healthy and happy. In the case of
the girls, they display doll size figurines of the Emperor and
Empress on their wedding day in the hopes that their daughters
will find a suitable partner in marriage. But most of the activities
for the boys focus on symbols of strength and courage, such as
the warriors helmet (Kabuto) and the carp (Koinobori). (a
veritable pest here in Australia, but seen as a strong swimmer for
its ability to swim upstream) Students delighted in folding their
pieces of Japanese paper to create fancy Kabuto warrior
helmets. A tad small for most heads and not quite battle
standard, but we had fun either way.

Yesterday afternoon our South Development Cup team played Central. It was a thrilling match with our
boys putting their stamp on the game with a very early try. The boys have been busy in training over the
last two weeks practicing their tackling skills. Throughout the match both sides worked hard to overcome
the opposition. The final score line was 30-20. Players of the match for Game one and this game were
named. Congratulations to Jake Flanagan and Matthew Drews. They both scored an NRL lunchbag. Next
week the boys are off to Pittsworth. We wish them well!
Good luck to Nicholas Goodwin, Noah Cubby and Doug Hunter who are off to Stanthorpe this weekend
as part of the Bunya Soccer Team. A reminder that nominations for the Bunya Rugby Union Team (boys
and girls) are now due. Forms are available from the Office or from the Notes Homes section on
Skoolbag.
