ABOUTOURTHEME:PresbyteriansforEarthCare’sbiennialconferencein2017willfocusonwater
issuesatthenexusofclimatechangeandindigenouspeople.Caringforandcelebratingthe“watersoflife”has
alwaysbeencentraltoindigenouspeopleoftheworld,muchaswaterritualsandimagesinscripturearecentral
intheChristiantradition.Acrossournation,increaseddevelopment,includingfossilfuelextractionand
transportationprojectsthreatenwaters,especiallythewatersofindigenouslandinplaceslikeStandingRockand
theColumbiaRiverWatershed.Indigenouswisdom,leadership,andresistancehavemuchtoteachabouthowto
facethesestruggles.
TheconferencesiteoverlookstheColumbiaRiverGorge,whereanage-oldNativeAmericanspresencehasbeen
affectedbydams,pollution,fishandwildlifehabitatlossandincreasingly,climatechange.TheDoctrineof
Discovery,the15th-centuryjustificationforEuropeansubjugationofnon-Christianpeoplesunderliesmany
environmentalinjusticesthatweseetoday.Thus,ourconferencebeginswithNativeAmericanvoicesonwater
andapowerfulexperientialworkshopontheDoctrineofDiscovery.Joinusforauniquejourneyofmindandspirit
thatleadsustowardfaith-filledearthcarediscussionsonwaterandrelatedissues.
