2015-2016
Dear Memorial School Family,
Welcome to another exciting year at Memorial Elementary School!
This year our school theme is Today’s
Learners, Tomorrow’s Leaders. The Memorial Elementary School PTA has many exciting events and opportunities
in the works to connect to this theme and we are very excited to share them with you throughout the upcoming
school year.
In order to be successful, we will need the support and involvement of our families, faculty, staff, and community
business leaders. Your support really makes a difference in what we can offer to our children throughout the year.
Be a LEADER and become a member of the Memorial Elementary School PTA today! We look forward to
your participation in the many events and programs that we are planning for the year. Your participation could be
that of a committee member, volunteer, or as an attendee. Whatever level of participation you select, your time and
involvement will certainly be appreciated.
Parent involvement makes a key difference and shows children the value in working together toward common
goals. Getting involved is easy! Chairpersons head each event and can be contacted through personal email,
home numbers or send your message to [email protected]. I know many of you think that
volunteering only once means you’re going to get sucked into way more volunteering than you’re ready for. We’re
committed to making sure that’s not true. We’ll thankfully accept any time you can provide.
Within this PTA packet your will find information you will need throughout the school year. Please take the time to
look over and fill out each of the enclosed forms. This will help greatly in the preplanning process for events and
also gives you an idea of what kinds of volunteer opportunities are available during the course of the year.

Why Join PTA
What is the PTA?
PTA stands for Parent-Teacher Association. It is an organization that was created over 100
years ago to bring parents and teachers together to improve the lives and education of children.
Research shows when parents are involved, students do better in school. Their grades are
higher, they are more confident, their self-esteem grows and schools improve.
Who can join the PTA?
Everyone should join. We welcome parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, and
community vendors with open arms. Our members determine the strength and impact of our
organization.
Why should you join the PTA?
#1: It benefits your child! It sends the message that they are important to you and that you value
education.
#2: You can be part of the solution and make suggestions for change. Your voice and ideas help
improve the quality of education for your children and their peers.
#3: You can be a role model for your child and their classmates.
#4: You can help raise necessary funds to improve and enrich the school environment.
#5: You can share and expand your skills and talents in the classroom and during events.
Why shouldn’t you join the PTA?
Hmmm….We cannot think of any!

10 Reasons to Get Involved at School
1. Volunteering makes a big difference. Research consistently shows that kids whose parents
are involved in their schools do better.
2. Volunteering offers tangible ways to be part of things. Sometimes we might mean well, but
our busy lives get in the way of committing. Joining a parent group will provide concrete
ways to get involved, whether at events, in the classroom, or on a committee.
3. It feels great to participate! Your child spends a lot of time at school, and it’s great to share
some of her school-related experiences with her.
4. You’ll get to know other parents. It’s powerful to create a circle of adult friends around a
school, and having a shared interest is a good place to start. What’s more, it can help foster
connections between families in your community.
5. Your help is always needed. Whether it’s helping run the next big event or providing support
in the classroom, there are always ways to pitch in.
6. It’s a manageable commitment. Volunteering can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.
Spend an hour at a bingo night or talent show, and your efforts will be appreciated. And
remember, it’s always OK to say no when you’re busy.
7. It’s fun! Even simple events like game night can spice up your week.
8. You can tailor volunteering to play to your strengths. Within a parent group or school
community there are many ways to contribute, some of which are sure to complement your
strengths, interests, or professional skills.
9. Have a great idea? Volunteering gives you opportunities to get your ideas out there.
10. Volunteering provides another way to get to know school and support staff to better
understand their needs and ideas.

MEMORIAL SCHOOL PTA invites you to join us and become a PTA member for the 2015-2016 school year. PTA is
the largest organization of its kind dedicated to advocacy on behalf of children and public schools. Becoming a
PTA member does not require a time commitment nor does it mean you have to volunteer. By joining PTA, you’re
simply saying, “Yes, I support our children and public schools!”
Our goal is to reach 100% school-wide participation. Please help us meet this goal! All adult family members are
encouraged to join, along with extended family and friends.
ANNUAL PTA MEMBERSHIP DUES ARE $15 PER FAMILY
Many people ask, “What does my PTA do? Why join? Why donate?” MEMORIAL PTA plays a critical role in both
sustaining and supporting many school programs. Our School theme this year is “Today’s Learners, Tomorrow’s
Leaders” Here are just a few examples of where our PTA money goes to support this theme: Student Assemblies,
Author Visits, Theater Week, Scholastics Book Fairs, Teacher Grants, Teacher Appreciation, Field Day, Library
Purchases, Technology and more.

In an effort to "Go Green" and help the environment, the PTA will no longer send out paper reminders for events

Student Directory
Please return this form in a sealed envelope labeled “PTA Directory” within your child’s backpack or you
can email the information to [email protected] with subject as PTA Directory.
Although the Memorial School PTA no longer sends home a student directory to each family, we do keep a family
database that provides student information to our classroom parents that can be shared with families who request
contact information for play dates, birthday parties and other social gatherings. We hope this year’s directory can
include as many students as possible.
** Without your annual consent, your family information cannot be added. **
Please check and complete one of the below options:
1. ______ YES, please publish the same family information as last year.

within the school and/or community. It will also be the way the PTA will send reminders, updates and information
about events, programs and other topics that may be of interest. By checking this blank, your email will be removed

Classroom Parents
The PTA is looking for three volunteers per class to be Classroom Parents for each classroom.
While this is a rewarding and fun job, the volunteers do have some very important
responsibilities. Volunteers MUST coordinate with each other to manage a class party each.
Parties are tentatively scheduled for October 30, December 23 and June 15.
Room Parent duties:

Class Parties – You will be assigned a class party to plan and run with the help of other parents.
You will communicate with the teacher as to time, activity, etc. You will need to contact parents
of the children in the class for donations and/or purchase what is needed for the party with
funds provided by the room parent chairperson. This involves phoning and inviting parents to the
party. Room parents must be able to attend the party or arrange for an alternate in the event of
unforeseen circumstances. Younger siblings may not attend class parties.

Emergency Notification – You may be asked by the school to help ensure each parent from your
class is aware of early dismissal, delay or cancellation. It is put into effect when the children are
already in school and the weather worsens, or before school hours due to maintenance
problems. You will be notified if/when these calls are to be made. You MUST be able to make
these calls as needed.

Classroom Gifts – Purchase a gift card to be presented to the teacher as a mid-year gift to class.
Purchase an end of year gift for the teacher.
** Please Note: The PTA WILL NOT provide water for class events this year. **
Interested parents MUST attend the PTA class parent meeting on 9/21/15 @ 7:00 PM and
must be a paid PTA member to be considered for the position.
This is a great job that needs committed, responsible people. You get to know all of the children
and teachers and are involved in planning some fun for the children!
