Calendar of Events for October, 2004
All Events are Free and Open to the Public
County Commissions Have Proclaimed October as "One Book, One Allegany County
Month!
Rosie the Riveters turned out to tell us their stories.
"One Book One Allegany County 2004" is now under way. A grant from the
Cumberland Rotary Club is making this year's campaign possible. Other sponsors of this
event include: Allegany County Board of Education, Allegany Arts Council, Cumberland
Theatre, New Embassy Theatre, Main Street Books in Frostburg, Book Center in
Downtown Cumberland, Waldenbooks & Country Club Mall, and Cumberland TimesNews. Radio stations WCBC, WFRB, WKGO and WTBO will have chances to win
book-store gift certificates during the month. We have all kinds of multimedia events
planned for the month, but don't forget a lot of the success of this literacy initiative is
dependent on having as many people as possible actually reading or listening to Mary
Shelley's book Frankenstein. See below for events planned.
It's Alive! Read for the fun of it! TEEN READ WEEK - (OCT. 17-23) Reading
this year's "One Book" selection, Frankenstein with pre-teens/teens is a great lead-in to
open up discussion. There are many themes that would be of interest to older kids. Some
of the Frankenstein movies are based on only a part of the book; so, if you haven't read
the book you may not understand this monster? at all.
During October thru November 9th., our libraries are joining Community Unity In
Action, Inc to bring you "Kids Don't Be A Joke--Don't Smoke Contest" for youths
ages 9-18. Details are available at the library or online at
www.alleganycountylibrary.info.
