Allegany County Library System Calendar of Events for October, 2004 All Events are Free and Open to the Public County Commissions Have Proclaimed October as "One Book, One Allegany County Month! Rosie the Riveters turned out to tell us their stories. "One Book One Allegany County 2004" is now under way. A grant from the Cumberland Rotary Club is making this year's campaign possible. Other sponsors of this event include: Allegany County Board of Education, Allegany Arts Council, Cumberland Theatre, New Embassy Theatre, Main Street Books in Frostburg, Book Center in Downtown Cumberland, Waldenbooks & Country Club Mall, and Cumberland TimesNews. Radio stations WCBC, WFRB, WKGO and WTBO will have chances to win book-store gift certificates during the month. We have all kinds of multimedia events planned for the month, but don't forget a lot of the success of this literacy initiative is dependent on having as many people as possible actually reading or listening to Mary Shelley's book Frankenstein. See below for events planned. It's Alive! Read for the fun of it! TEEN READ WEEK - (OCT. 17-23) Reading this year's "One Book" selection, Frankenstein with pre-teens/teens is a great lead-in to open up discussion. There are many themes that would be of interest to older kids. Some of the Frankenstein movies are based on only a part of the book; so, if you haven't read the book you may not understand this monster? at all. During October thru November 9th., our libraries are joining Community Unity In Action, Inc to bring you "Kids Don't Be A Joke--Don't Smoke Contest" for youths ages 9-18. Details are available at the library or online at www.alleganycountylibrary.info. During renovation of the Main Branch, the LaVale Branch will be open on Sundays from 1-5 pm! Mon. 4 Computer Class: Introduction to the Internet Designed for people with no prior experience using the Internet. Learn about browsers, search engines, and hyperlinks. Perform simple searches. Gates Computer Lab at Frostburg Branch 10 am Mon. 4 "One Book" Kick-off Narrative readings from the book and portrayal of Mary Shelley by Juanita Salazar and fellow actors. Program will end with some pre-Frankenstein from the movies. New Embassy Theatre in Cumberland Twilight (7 pm) Wed. 6 thru Oct 24 Production of the Play Frankenstein at the Cumberland Theatre. George's Creek Branch 7 pm Wed. 13 Meet the Blind during Meet the Blind Month Blind Industries and Services of Maryland will be available to answer questions about what it's like to be blind. This will be a perfect opportunity for children and adults. South Cumberland Branch 3-4 pm Thurs. 14 Get Ready for TEEN READ WEEK!
