It’s winter in the northern hemisphere. I learned that in science class many years ago. It’s a special time of the year when everything seems to get a chance to regenerate before blooming again in the spring. For me winter always meant a time to relax, read and reflect and plan for what’s next, because time is just supposed to be a bit slower. That didn’t happen. Ever since becoming an adult, time has not slowed down one iota. It seems busier than ever. This year is no exception. We just witnessed the inauguration of a new President and the departure of the old President. The inauguration signifies something more than politics. It brings to the forefront the fact that change is in the air. Change in the political arena is only one area we deal with. We also experience change in other parts of our cosmos – church included. While national church memberships are declining, sharing the gospel of Jesus is increasing, at least in our neck of the woods. How is that happening? People who follow Jesus look at ways to be the hands and feet of Christ, doing the work of God out of joy and gratefulness that God gave us such a great gift. Churches are growing, while “memberships” are not. Church is changing right along with the new challenges the world is presenting to us. We are reaching out to meet new people, instead of waiting for someone to reach in. Isn’t that what being a Christian is all about? While we love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, we also get the fantastic opportunity to reach out to other people – just as Jesus did! We had to postpone the children’s program until January 8th. This year the program was called “The New Star”. The original Christmas Star explains the Christmas story to the two new Christmas stars. The children and youth took the parts of the stars, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, sheep, wise men, Herod and the angels. The kids did a great job of telling the Christmas Story. The Sunday school teachers, Cindy Cummins, Sara Haskell, Amy Fair, Mary Ann Sander, and Lisa Dollens, did a great job of getting the kids in their costumes and in place. Between the services on the 8th the kids were able to have their Christmas party which had also been postponed. They enjoyed refreshments, games and a candy bar exchange. Santa even interrupted his vacation to pay a visit. Amy Fair did a great job in organizing the party. The youth attend WOW in Springfield in January 21st and 22nd. We left at 6:30 Saturday morning to catch the Conference bus in Columbia. At WOW the kids experienced worship services, concerts, entertainment, and indepth sessions. The youth attending WOW this year were: Kyle Haskell, Derek Calhoon, Collin Haskell, Nick Belshe, Izac Crandall, Nathan Crandall, Evan Banta, Allison Rackley, Rachel Haskell, Emma Romine, Lacey Pavlak, Breanna Dollens, Lauren Lafferty, and Emma Edwards. Sara Haskell and Scott Long attended as chaperones. The littlest lamb at the Christmas program. The next youth meeting is scheduled for February 12th at 5pm. The location is yet to be decided. We welcomed new babies and new members. We enjoyed Children’s time with an altar filled with young people. We mourned the loss of loved ones, prayed for the sick and rejoiced in the healing power of God. We provided coats, school supplies, meals, Christmas gifts and other acts of generosity for those less fortunate. We experienced awesome worship experiences lead by Pastor Bill, Mr. Long, the Praise Team, the Choir, scripture readers, numerous soloists and special presentations. We had fellowship with one another on Sunday mornings, at various meals, Men’s and Women’s groups, McDonalds, and anywhere else two or more of us gathered. We formed, trained, and deployed a Disaster Response Team. Our Youth Group once again participated in the statewide “WOW” event among their other activities. We opened our doors to the community to host a preschool, girl and boy scouts, elections, and other community events. In order for our church to do all of these things, and more, we need to have the spiritual and the financial capability to carry out these activities. There is no doubt we have the spiritual capabilities. Financially, CUMC dug deep into our pockets and made significant strides in meeting the financial challenges we faced. Through tithes and offerings and other sources of income, our Church raised almost $230,000. $70,000 of that amount was raised during the last two months of the year. Our Church was within $2,900 of meeting its operational expenses. CUMC is to be commended for their generosity. However, there are still unmet financial obligations. You may recall we had to replace the air conditioning and cold air return system which cost about $12,500. Our Church previously borrowed $51,000 to help cover financial shortfalls we experienced in previous years. These two items leave our Church owing about $63,500. The Administrative Board has approved the budget for 2017. It trimmed expenses by almost $6,000. However, the outstanding debt has to be addressed this year. The Administrative Board, Financial Committee and Stewardship Committee will be working together with the Church to address the financial needs. We will need the support and the continued strong commitment of the entire Church to meet these financial obligations. It is our hope that by publicizing these needs early in the year, we can all work together all year long to tackle these challenges. We ask that you pray for our Church and consider how you can further help CUMC continue to grow. Blessings, CUMC Financial Stewardship Team Article submitted by: Nathan Chitwood 573-424-1775, [email protected] 2017 Financial Pledge Cards will be distributed beginning Sun. Jan. 29th. Please submit your pledge card by Feb. 5th or as soon as possible - in addition to giving you a giving goal to aim for, it will truly help our Finance Team make the best possible use of our monetary resources in the coming year.
