Universidad de Salamanca ______________________________________________________________________________ Description Universidad de Salamanca is considered the oldest Spanish university in existence if not one of the oldest in the world. It was established in 13th century (1218) by King Alfonso IX of Leon and had a golden age during the Renaissance. It currently has around 27,000 students and 9 campuses. The University owns several libraries too. Around 2.3% of students are international. Surrounding area Salamanca is a World Heritage Site with a multitude of hidden corners and historic buildings, all located within the historic centre, so the best way to discover it is on foot. It is considered by many to be the Spanish Renaissance city par excellence. During your week-ends you can go for a walk around the city and visit the two cathedrals (yes, Salamanca is one of the only cities of the world that is proud to have two cathedrals): Cathedral Vieja and Cathedral Nueva. Then continue your visit to the University’s Historic Building, the oldest in Spain, to try and find the frog on its façade. A legend says that the one who can find it will have lots of luck during the following year. For an overview of the city, don’t forget to climb the La Clerecía Towers and enjoy some spectacular views from the tower balconies. Sunrise and sunset are magical moments. The light manages to transform both the interior of the buildings and their exterior, a unique light that bathes the gilt-coloured façades that reflect the famous people who once walked its streets, and whose presence can still be felt. Don’t forget to visit some cities around Salamanca, as the bus network is very good: Segovia, Valladolid, and Toledo...
