Welcome
@squarechapel
By David McQuillan, Director
Welcome to Square Chapel Centre for the Arts. We are a
place of many stories, not only within the contents of our
bustling building and brilliant programme of work, but the
story of the centre itself. Back in 1988, six local people
paid £25 for a ruined building and set about their dream of
restoring it and converting it to a vibrant arts centre for the
people of Calderdale and beyond. For those of us that have
been at Square Chapel for some time this is an old story; it
feels like part of a mythology - but like all those stories that
endure it is filled with hope, triumph and humanity.
A home to grow talent,
ambition and to give people
a platform to be creative.

“I want people to find joy in my illustrations, for them to evoke memories,
to find magic in the mundane.” Laura-Kate Chapman
After ten years of planning and development, we are
delighted to have started work on our £6.6 million
expansion to Square Chapel. The capital build will transform
our venue by creating a new extension, a level access to the main space and
improved facilities for everyone who uses the centre. The building will include
an intimate 108 seater multi-purpose cinema/studio theatre space for film
screenings, performances and workshops; new dressing rooms, improved
toilets, a dedicated space for its committed volunteers and a café-bar area.
There will also be direct access into the Piece Hall’s new interpretation centre
creating a seamless cultural quarter in the heart of Halifax.
The project should be complete by the summer of 2017 with a full programme
of events to launch in the autumn of that year. Until then we will remain open
as normal and continue to welcome audiences from across the region. So sit
back, relax and enjoy another great season of work at Square Chapel Centre
for the Arts.

How the Koala Learnt to Hug
Brighton Rock

PG

Tuesday 29 March | 2.30pm | £8
Koalas are the cuddliest critters but just how did the koala learn to hug?
That’s the question our magical Australian storyteller means to answer as
he tries to get his daughter and the children in the audience to finally give
their parents a well-deserved hug. Will he succeed? Join us and our terrific
outback cast for this warm and wonderful story about picnics, bubbles
and the magic of family. Based on the bestselling book by Steven Lee this
charming family musical is suitable for children aged 3+.
In 1940s Brighton, the vicious criminal Pinkie Brown
(the late great Richard Attenborough) is the leader
of his small-time gang. After Brown murders a rival,
he finds an alibi through a waitress, Rose (Carol
Marsh), whom he promises to marry in return for her
corroboration. Despite the police ruling it a suicide, Ida
Arnold (Hermione Baddeley), a woman who was with
Brown’s victim before the murder, continues with her
own investigation. Meanwhile, Brown is rapidly losing his
grip on the situation. Based on Graham Greene’s novel
and screenplay, you can see this classic black and white
gangster film back on the big screen this winter.
As an extra treat, author Steven Lee will be available to sign copies of How
the Koala Learnt to Hug which will be on sale after the show.

Ivo, an Estonian man stayed behind during the war
in Georgia in 1990 - a land ravaged by conflict - to
harvest his crops of tangerines. In a bloody war at his
door, a wounded solider is left behind, and Ivo is forced
to take him in. Can these two enemies live under one
roof? Watch this powerful and poignant story unfold on
the big screen with this Golden Globe nominee for best
foreign language film.
In the week leading up to their 45th wedding
anniversary, a couple receive an unexpected letter
which contains potentially life changing news - turning
an apparently everyday story of a marriage in quiet
crisis into something rather extraordinary. Is there such
a thing as a ‘good and happy’ marriage? Can secrets
and desire tear that marriage apart and can we ever
really know someone and what they are thinking? Full
of emotion and triumph and starring award winners
Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay, see this critically

musician and songwriter, Alasdair
Roberts comes to Halifax with
his solo tour. Roberts has had
a remarkable career, starting

Elias String Quartet
Thursday 10 March | 8pm | £12 (£10 concs)
Friday 11 March | 7.30pm | £18
(£16 Concs £5 students, £2 under 16s)
You’re invited to ‘An Odd Occasion’. We’ll have a drink
and a bite and a chat. We’ll dance inappropriately.
We’ll do a quiz and pretend to be feminists of the past.
We’ll eat some unusually-shaped cake! Part theatre
performance, part riotous cabaret tea party, this is
a unique event that explores men, women and the
spaces we inhabit. It’s about identity and difference. It’s
funny, shamelessly brash and a little bit rude. Suitable
for ages 12+
The Elias String Quartet is internationally acclaimed as
one of the leading ensembles of their generation. Known
for their intense and vibrant performances, the quartet
has travelled the globe collaborating with some of the
finest musicians and playing in the world’s great halls.
“Remarkable throughout… bold, rich tone and
expressive nuances contributing to an intense and
deeply felt interpretation.” The New York Times
“No airs and graces just
fantastic music.”

techniques on the guitar… an
exceptional lyricist.” The Wire

The last decade has seen an unprecedented boom in
prices for Chinese art. Even relatively modest pieces
can achieve prices well into six figures. However, many

Becoming Hattie
Thursday 31 March | 8pm | £12 (£10 concs)
It’s 1974 and 8 year old Jo is snuggled up on the settee
in her polyester nightie, eating an arctic roll and reading
‘Jackie’ magazine. She is idly glancing at the telly when
there on the screen is a woman unlike anyone she has
ever seen. Jo knows, in that moment, the woman before
her is the woman she will one day become. That woman
is Hattie Jacques. 40 years later, and Jo has followed
Hattie’s footsteps. Thoughtful, funny, warm and nostalgic,
this one woman show takes an affectionate look at the
life and career of a remarkable woman in show business.
