Script for Junior Book Awards 2016
Colorado School of Mines
The Colorado School of Mines Medal of Achievement in Math and Science goes to a
junior with particularly strong ability and achievement in the areas of mathematics and
science.
 Medallion Award - This Medal of Achievement is worth a $1,000 scholarship to
Colorado School of Mines
 RECIPIENT: Theodore Hill
Dartmouth College
The Dartmouth Book Award, presented by the Dartmouth Club of Dallas is designed to
encourage intellectual excellence and to recognize student achievement. The recipient
should be a junior who has demonstrated intellectual leadership and has made a
positive contribution to the extracurricular life of the school.
 Book – The Poetry of Robert Frost (former Dartmouth graduate and professor)
 RECIPIENT: Megan Ungerman
Harvard University
As defined by the Harvard Alumni Association, the Prize Book is awarded to the
outstanding student in the next graduating class who “displays excellence in scholarship
and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.”

 RECIPIENT: Robert Luo
Hollins University
The English program at Hollins University has been described by Creative Writing In
America as “the most productive writing program in the United States.” The Hollins
University Book Award is presented to a junior female student who has demonstrated
excellence in writing, excellence in scholarship, and has strong character. It comes with
a $250 scholarship for a Hollins summer program of her choice including Taking Joy in
the Art of Creative Writing.
 Book -Native Guard – poems by Natash Trethewey, Pulitzer Prize winner and
Poet Laureate of the U.S. 2012-2013.
 RECIPIENT: Erin Beasley
Randolph College
The Randolph College Book Award is given to a high school junior who exhibits academic
excellence and has demonstrated strong leadership skills. The recipient automatically
qualifies for a renewable merit scholarship of $5,000 per year if accepted for admission
to Randolph College.


Book - The Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art to celebrate the 100th
anniversary of the exhibit at Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College and was
compiled by four former Randolph students.
RECIPIENT: Jackson Hubbard
Rensselear Polytechnic Institute The Rensselear Polytechnic Institute Medal Award goes to a junior who is an
outstanding student in math and science in hopes of motivating the student toward
careers in science, engineering, and technology.
 Medallion Certificate- This certificate is a minimum $25,000 per year merit
scholarship offer guaranteed for four years if you apply, accept, and enroll at
Resselear.
 RECIPIENT: Laura Wilson
Rhodes College After being rated as the number one among “Most Service-Minded Schools”, Rhodes
College has chosen to honor a high school junior who has demonstrated exemplary
community service. One of the things Rhodes students take with them from their four
years at the College is a clear sense of the impact that they can make in their own
communities through service and volunteerism.
 Book – A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity by Nicholas
D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. It is a collection of stories of real life leaders
who have dedicated their lives to creating opportunities and initiatives that
have changed the world.
 RECIPIENT: Hannah Genender
Salem College
As the 13th oldest college in the nation—and the oldest institution dedicated to the
education of women—Salem has always championed independence for women in
thought and action. The Salem College Book Award is presented to a young woman
who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the classroom, active involvement in
quality high school activites, and displays exceptional character and commitment to
community service. The award also includes an $8,000 scholarship, renewable annually
for each year of study at Salem College.
 Book - Among the Ten Thousand Things, a novel by Julia Pierpoint. It is a
portrait of an American family on the cusp of an irrevocable change, and a
story of love and time lost.
 RECIPIENT : Madeline Ngo
University of the South in Sewanee
The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee is recognized for its long-standing
tradition of academic and literary excellence. The recipient of this award is chosen on
the basis of scholarship, leadership and demonstrated excellence in writing. Also taken
into consideration are the recipient’s interests, activities, and achievements in school
and community.
 Book - The Family Fang by Kevin Wilson who is an assistant professor of
English at the University of the South. Later this year, the film version of The
Family Fang will be released starring Jason Bateman and Nicole Kidman.
 RECIPIENT : Cindy Ren
Wake Forest
The recipient of the Wake Forest Book Award will embody these values:
Commitment to liberal learning, openness to new ideas and the pursuit of truth, and
recognition of his or her responsibility to serve and guide society. He or she will be a
leader both within the classroom and also within the broader school and community,
serving as a role model of conduct for other students.
 Book –The Complete Collected Poems of Maya Angelou who served as a
professor of American Studies at Wake Forest until her death earlier this
school year.
 RECIPIENT: Amanda Hodak
Washington and Lee University Book Award
The Washington and Lee University Book Award is presented to a junior
who exhibits the qualities cherished and exemplified by George Washington, a generous
benefactor to the university and Robert E. Lee, its president from 1865 to 1870. These
qualities are personal integrity, academic excellence, and significant campus
involvement.

 RECIPIENT: Field Parsons
Wellesley Book Award
The Wellesley Book Award is given to a female student in the junior class whose
academic record and character are exceptional, and who has also made significant
personal contributions to her school or community.
 Book – The Norton Book of Women’s Lives
 RECIPIENT: Sarah Hong
Yale University Book Award Presented by the Yale Club of Dallas, the Yale University Book Award is designed to
recognize a junior of exemplary academic achievements, who displays intellectual
promise and outstanding personal character.
 Book – A Little History of the World by E.H. Gombrich
