Donor Spotlight — FMA Communications
Community-Driven Giving
While the nonprofit organization as a business model dates
only to the 20th Century, groups have been organizing for
charitable or religious causes for thousands of years. So just
as these groups have driven the idea of fundraising throughout
history, it’s not surprising to see communities continue to come
together to raise funds for a common cause.
The new evolutions of community giving, however, are exciting
to witness. In August 2012, Campaigns and Elections magazine
estimated Barrack Obama’s 2012 text to donate campaign had
raised over $836 thousand in small increment campaign donations. Two years later in 2014, one family’s grass roots efforts
to raise awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease leveraged social
media to turn the “Ice Bucket Challenge” into a global phenomenon and $220 million dollars for ALS causes.
Goldie B. Floberg Center has been fortunate throughout our
history to connect with charity-minded communities. This year,
we witnessed two sisters drive a Crowdrise campaign to raise
over $7,000 to support their brother Joey’s favorite daily
enrichment program, LEEP. Twice in 2016, the employees of
FMA Communications directed proceeds from their quarterly
employee fundraisers to Goldie B. Floberg Center.
Founded in 1970, FMA brings metal fabricators and equipment
manufacturers together through technology councils, educational programs, networking events, and trade shows.
FMA employees raised funds through several creative
approaches, like selling “casual (shorts or
jeans) day” stickers,
a taco lunch sale, an
ice cream sundae
social, additional
cash donations, and
FMA’s corporate gift matching program
Later in 2016, FMA prepared to relocate their offices and held a
“garage sale” of equipment and furniture. Employees “bought”
these items for personal use by donating to Goldie Floberg. All
together, FMA’s generous community came together to donate
over $2,500 in both individual and corporate matching donations in 2016.
Steve Kling, Digital Marketing Manager for FMA noted, “This
was a great opportunity for everyone to win. FMA cleared out
large items prior to our move, I received a good deal on shelves
and cabinets, and Goldie Floberg was able to benefit as well. It
feels good to know my money went to their worthwhile programs, and ultimately to the people they serve.”
We at Goldie B. Floberg are grateful for every donor who feels
compelled to support the Mission and the children and adults
we serve. Drives like these show that as much as fundraising
may evolve to reach even more donors, at its heart it remains
rooted in community coming together for the greater good.

only providing safety and care.

we communicate outside our walls, executive
to executive, grant seeker to foundation, we
use the quantifying language which communicates the best possible picture of outcomes
and achievements. This isn’t just non-profit
nature or professional nature, it’s human
nature. This is the most direct path to
emphasizing our point.
Inside the figurative walls of Goldie B. Floberg
Center, our mission, “to empower and enrich
the lives of all people served,” may only be
achieved in single digits, one person at a time.
Yes, we serve children and adults with developmental disabilities. But that broad brush
stroke does not paint the wide spectrum of
unique abilities and challenges of each boy,
Each of us finds our richest personal growth
after we’ve been empowered by our support
systems, like family or education. My proudest moments, when I felt most fulfilled in life,
culminated from paths which I chose for myself
and my own passions.
These meaningful experiences are the right
of each and every one of us; and this is our
philosophy of service. We must gather every resource, directors, funders, community
members, behaviors specialists, DSPs—most
importantly, each individual ability, interest,
or “spark”—to help craft a path of meaning.
Meaning is not a program, it’s personal. And
the closer we come to delivering this right, the
further we move from a language of quantity.
Every year and every day, we seek the incremental steps towards an immeasurable
outcome for every individual we serve. I love
when we can’t measure that kind of success.

Achievements
Number of people served who
have her/his own bedroom: 65%.
This coupled with the fact that each
home supports between three and
four people separates us from many
other service providers (with larger
settings) and, above all, helps create
a more personalized home that supports each person’s basic need for privacy and personal space.
We doubled the number of people served who went on
their own vacation last year. Travelers include Erin who
went to Disney for her first ever vacation, thanks to the Dreammaker Fund; and David who achieved his first independent
vacation to Indiana.
We have four adults served who are working part-time and
earning at least minimum wage for the first time in their lives.
LEEP participants generated additional funds for their
program though the sales of produce grown by LEEP on
Center land, handmade candle crafts, jellies, candied nuts,
and salsas. Participants sold these goods in their own booth
at three farmer’s markets within our community, earning
additional income for themselves and this their program.

Goldie B. Floberg Center is a multi-program charitable
organization formed to provide programmatic services for
children and adults with developmental disabilities. Goldie
B. Floberg Center was incorporated as a nonprofit Illinois
Corporation and is exempt from federal and state income taxes
under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.
The Center’s programs are:
• Group Home - Residential, therapeutic counseling and
related services for children in a community setting.
• Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA) Supervision, counseling, job training and support for adults
living independently in the community.
• Learning, Enrichment, and Empowerment Program Supervision, support and educational services related to
activities of daily living, vocational activities and
development of leisure skills.
