Black Cats Go

So Furry is So Loved
a.k.a. “Gary”
Did you know that black cats have the
lowest adoption rate of all kitties? Some
people are superstitious of them and
some like more colorful cats because
they are easier to photograph.
I want to give you an update on our
gorgeous orangecicle Persian my
husband, Matt, and I adopted from
Furry Friends in December of 2010.
What you may not know is that of the
rest of the world considers black cats
to be lucky and a sign of prosperity.
If you are style and design conscious
keep in mind that a black cat goes with
everything. They are an accessory to
any home decor and to any clothes
that you might wear. They also will look
elegant posing on your pink velvet sofa.
Back then, she was called “So-Furry,”
but today, she’s our “Gary.” Her foster
mom told us she was found living
outdoors with three newborn kittens,
two of which did not survive due to birth
defects. She is the sweetest, gentlest cat
I’ve ever known.
Although she still doesn’t like to be held,
she tolerates our cat-crazy 10-year-old
daughter dressing her up. Gary is an
absolute angel and I can’t imagine our
family without her. She is the Best Cat in
the World and I think she’s as happy with
us as we are with her. Thank you so much
for bringing us together — and enjoy this
photo of Gary lying on my purse.
If you want a cat that really needs you,
you should be looking at adopting one
of these black diamonds. They are full of
personality and will be loyal to you for
years to come. Check out some of the
black felines that Furry Friends has to
offer such as Crimson, Faith, Magic and
Ross. These exotic beauties would love
to come home with you.
P.S. We named this girl Gary because
years ago, I heard that cats and dogs
responded best to a hard-g name like Gus
or Grady. It allegedly gets their attention.
So I decided when I had a pet, I’d only
pick G-names. I was planning to have a
dog named Gary, but fell in love with this
female cat and she became Gary. It just
kind of fit and she likes it.

Adoptions and Expenses
Since the beginning of the year we have
taken in 59 adult cats and 41 kittens, and
we have adopted out 62 adults and 25
kittens. We pride ourselves on the high
quality of food and health care we provide
our cats and this year we have dealt with
stomatitis, diabetes, polyps, parasitic
disease, dermatitis, teeth cleanings and
extractions and infections and issues with
malnutrition and old age. Some of our

for veterinary, $8,492 for medical supplies,
and $7,380 for food and litter. We also had
rent $8,800 and utilities $2,770.
Fundraising
Our supporters were especially generous
this year. This fall we raised nearly $30,000
at “The Great Catsby,” our annual dinner

Most of us expect to outlive our animal companions. But what
if, due to unexpected medical incapacity or death, we are no

Why Spay and Neuter
The problem of cat overpopulation is a
global one and requires a solution on a
global scale. But like every journey that
begins with a single step, this particular
journey must begin with every cat owner
in every community, town and city in the
country. Those conscientious owners who
act responsibly by spaying and neutering
their cherished family pets.
Spaying (ovariohysterectomy) is the
surgical removal of a female cat’s ovaries
and uterus, while neutering (castration)
is the removal of a male cat’s testicles.
To minimize discomfort and pain, both
procedures are performed under general
anesthesia. Most cats are back to their
“normal” selves within a few days, the
surgery site usually heals within two
weeks, and any skin stitches removed by
your vet at a follow up appointment.
few homes to either foster or adopt them.
Why? Because there are still too many cat
owners unwilling to spay and neuter their
family pets.
Both intact male and female cats may
try to escape their homes in order to
roam outside. Neutering your male will
eliminate roaming, urine spraying, and
fighting with neighborhood cats. Spaying
your female will eliminate the estrus or
“heat” behavior of yowling that attracts
and invites mounting by roaming males.
Did you know that in seven years, an
unspayed female and unneutered male
cat (and their offspring, if none are spayed
or neutered) can result in the births of a
staggering 781,250 kittens?
Despite some owners’ fears, spaying
and neutering will not alter their cat’s
basic personality — except many males
will be less aggressive and more docile.
Their playfulness, general activity levels,
excitement, and vocalization will remain
the same. Although neutered males and
spayed females may gain weight due
to decreased roaming and other sexual
behavior outdoors, keeping them active
indoors and managing their weight
through diet will keep this potential
problem under control.
And the inevitable outcome? Hundreds
of thousands of cats being euthanized
each year through no fault of their own.
Why? Because they are the tragic, but
avoidable, results of over breeding and
overpopulation. Why? Because there are
too few shelters to house them and too
Spaying and neutering cats before the age
of six months is growing in popularity and
the benefits to their health and well being
are well documented. Spayed females
are less likely to develop breast cancer
and won’t be at risk for either ovarian
or uterine cancer. Neutered males won’t
develop testicular cancer, and without the
need to roam, their risk of being injured
or infected by other cats is drastically
reduced. And males neutered prior to
puberty (six months) won’t develop the
large head and thick skin of intact males.
Early spaying and neutering may also
prevent problem behaviors before they
occur and may either eliminate or reduce
certain behaviors in older cats.
Imagine if every conscientious cat owner
in every community, town and city in the
country took responsibility for spaying and
neutering their family pets. Imagine what
we, as part of the global community, could
accomplish then.
