From the Pastor’s Desk…
Dear Friends:
The kingdom of heaven is like an oasis of unlimited water and hot dogs for a
tuba player who just finished marching two miles in full dress uniform.
The kingdom of heaven is like a professional entertainer who welcomes high
school amateurs to his stage and makes them the star of his show.
The kingdom of heaven is like a church on a holiday weekend whose pews are
empty because her members are all out of town. Instead of locking the doors
and closing up, they go outside and start inviting everyone who passes by to a
party. The church begins to swell and they have more people than they have had
all year -- even more than on Easter Sunday.
What happens to a church on a holiday weekend? Usually we expect attendance
to be a little lighter. But what if a church decides not to carry on with business
as usual, but to join with the community in their celebration of the holiday?
If you were at our church at 3:30pm on May 24th you would have seen the answer. The kingdom of heaven was near. A lawn packed with first time visitors
who were having a great time!
There were a few things I noticed about the people who joined us for our
Memorial Day post-parade party. The group that gathered on the lawn was
much more diverse than we typically see on Sunday morning. It was also much
more representative of the Saint Clair Shores community. We had more young
children than we have seen in many years. There were more high school
students than we have on our membership rolls. We enjoyed more racial
diversity and greeted more racial minorities in the period of one hour than we
have welcomed throughout the entire past year. What a blessing to have so
many people who are not like us!
Those who are regulars at Lake Shore Church found themselves enjoying the
event not merely as hosts but as participants. We had Florence King (an 82 year
old member) proving to our youngest guests that church ladies can have fun too
as she climbed up and down the bounce house 10 times. Our youth manned a
“tattoo booth”, desiring to serve rather than to be served. We had adults grilling
hot dogs. Others served home-baked cookies. We had people mingling and
sharing their passion for our church as they encouraged people to make themselves at home.
Thank you to all who invested in this outreach with your dollars, time, energy,
and most importantly, prayers. It was a fitting celebration for Pentecost as the
Spirit pulled together people who might not have considered themselves
religious, but who nevertheless found themselves blessed by the ministry of
Christ’s church. How nice that Pentecost was not just a memorial event that we
commemorated in our sanctuary, but became a visible celebration in our
community. How nice to welcome new friends who have been passing by our
church for years but who just noticed us for the first time.
In Christ,
Pastor Adam

A Message from our CLM’s……
Lexiphile
"Lexiphile" is a word used to describe those that have a love for words, like: you can tune a piano,
but you can't tuna fish, or:
To write with a broken pencil is . . . pointless.
When fish are in schools, they sometimes . . . take debate.
A thief who stole a calendar . .. . got twelve months.
When the smog lifts in Los Angeles . . . . U.C.L.A.
The batteries were given out . . . free of charge.
A dentist and a manicurist married. . . . They fought tooth and nail.
A will is a . . . dead giveaway.
With her marriage, she got a new name . . . and a dress.
A boiled egg is . . . hard to beat.
When you've seen one shopping center . . . you've seen a mall.
Police were called to a day care where a three -year-old was . . . resisting a rest.
Did you hear about the fellow whose whole left side was cut off? . . . He's all right now.
A bicycle can't stand alone . . . it is two tired.
When a clock is hungry . . . it goes back four seconds
The guy who fell onto an upholstery machine . . . was fully recovered.
He had a photographic memory . . . which was never developed.
Those who get too big for their britches will be . .. . exposed in the end.
When she saw her first strands of gray hair, . . . she thought she'd dye.
Acupuncture: . . . a jab well done.
Hope you enjoyed the above. It is something fun for all ages. It reminds me of a saying I saw recently,….
“The way of your day will go the way the corners of your mouth turn.” Hope these silly sayings “lexiphiles”
put a smile on your face to share with others throughout the day.
Wishing you a blessed month filled with much laughter.

Graduation Pictures
If you have (or are) a High School senior or a soon-to-be College graduate, please send the office
your graduation picture. We love to update the picture board in the Narthex each year with any
and all graduation pictures! Your pictures will be returned if you wish. Be on the look out for
the 2015 Graduation Board……….. and, Thank You !
June 1st is the last day to turn in your cook book recipes! Thank you for your
DEACON NEWS submissions. Now our work begins in earnest. We need to compile, program
and arrange them as the company requests. We’re certainly looking forward
to sharing the results with everyone!
We have been reviewing our ministries to the grieving. We hope to expand our programs according to the
needs we see here at Lake Shore Church. Your input would be appreciated. Leave us a note in the
“Suggestions” mail slot (see below).
Information sharing mail slots are now located in the mail room (the room next to the main office). Each
month copies of board minutes will be in the mail slot marked “Interesting Information”. We hope every
group will place notes in the slot to be read and returned by all who wish. This can help everyone know what’s
being planned and talked about. A second mail slot (under the first) is labeled “Suggestions”
for this communication to go both ways. We want to hear from you!

Toiletries
With summer vacation upon us, remember to save your wrapped, unused sample sized toiletries. We are looking for soaps, conditioners,
shampoos, lotions and deodorants. A couple times every year our youth
bag these items. We distribute them to MCREST guests and for other
persons in need. When we made dinner at Second Mile we brought100 of these bags and gave them to the kids. They loved them!
There is a bin in the coat room for these items. Thank You!
MISSION NEWS...
Food Pantry/Clothes Closet
If you would like to help out in either, please check the schedule posted on the bulletin board across from the office. On that
schedule are posted two dates when we pick up food from MCCSA for our pantry. Those dates are the first and third Wednesday of
the month. We meet at church by 9:30am and unload and shelve the van of food we pick up from MCCSA. We can always use
volunteers on those days. Your time commitment for that volunteer job would be less than an hour on those days.
We are always in need of canned fruit, tuna, peanut butter for the pantry. We can also use the small sized water bottles for our
shampoo and dish soap. (We always break down our full sized bottles into the little ones for distribution to families). We can also
use paper grocery bags.
The Clothes Closet is only accepting spring and summer clothes for the closet. We do not have any storage space. Also, please limit
your household donations to linens and towels only.
Thank you for always supporting the Food Pantry and Clothes Closet
June Free Lunch Saturday
On Saturday, June 20th, from 10:30 am - 2 p.m., we will again be preparing and serving lunch to the community at Westminster
Church, Detroit. Sign up in the Atrium. Our friends at Westminster are grateful for our help in providing this outreach.
New Members/New Ideas
The Mission Team is looking for some new members. We would like to increase our outreach events, but definitely need some help
to do that. We are also always looking for new ideas for outreach events. If you would like to be part of the Mission Team, please
contact Cheryl Smark.
We are Lucky
- Living in SCS all my life, my exposure to people who are visibly homeless has been minimal. A
recent trip gave me a whole different perspective on the numbers of homeless individuals and how different cities deal
or not deal with the issue. In Oklahoma City there are numerous soup kitchens and missions that provide a meal for
those in need. In L.A. I saw dozens of tents and makeshift cardboard shelters along the freeway. The next day I saw the
city crews going through and dismantling and throwing away those same tents and shelters. In San Francisco and Seattle, people are sleeping right on the downtown streets and in both cities the homeless have been given a designated city
park where they can sleep overnight legally. Probably the worst city was Las Vegas, where every few feet I encountered
someone obviously homeless and begging.
But seeing all of these sad situations made me reflect on the problem of homelessness in our own area.
We see homeless families and individuals who are being housed overnight by MCREST. These same families and
individuals are being guided to permanent housing as it becomes available. We see the homeless men and few women
who are being fed and sheltered overnight by MCWARM.
Our church family here at Lake Shore understands how important it is that we do our part. Our church family always
supports any outreach that provides food and clothing for persons who are homeless or in need.
Even our involvement in Second Mile is a reflection of our concern for kids who are at risk. Second Mile
provides a hot meal once a week for these kids. Should a hot meal once a week be a treat? Shouldn’t a hot
meal every day be the norm?
Our church family at Lake Shore might not be able to change the course of people’s lives who are homeless
or in need, but we can change the course of their day. Through our efforts with MCREST, MCWARM,
Second Mile, and our own Food Pantry/Clothes Closet we can make a difference. The person who can
come to our food pantry, receive free food, and then use that money saved to pay a bill, is being impacted
by Lake Shore Church.
Our church family is a caring, generous, giving family who knows that we have so much and need to share
with those who are less fortunate.
I feel very lucky to have found Lake Shore Church and my much loved church family.
Thanks for letting me share,
Cheryl Smark

The Family Christian bookstore on Schoenherr (at
Hall Rd) has an amazing offer out there for all of
us to use! They have “Ministry Builder” stickers
that are used like - going old school here...S & H
Greenstamps!! For every $5 spent in store the
shopper is awarded one sticker, 20 stickers
collected on a Ministry Builder Card is worth $5
off anything in the store. It’s said that a local
church paid for their whole VBS curriculum with
these Ministry Builder Cards - approximately
$175 worth! That is something we can all get
behind and promote. We would like to take this
opportunity to collect these stickers and cards in
the church office, with all proceeds going to
further the ministry here at Lake Shore Church.
