Strategy: Summarize
A summary is a statement of the most important ideas in a passage or text. You can summarize by
restating the main ideas in a text in your own words. Summarizing can help a person understand
what they have read because it requires them to restate what the passage is about.
Skill: Main Idea and Details
The main idea is the most important point an author makes about a topic. To find the main idea, you
must first ask yourself what the sentences in a passage or text have in common, tell about, or
describe. They you can decide how the details are connected by classifying the details. Determining
the main idea is important because identifying the main idea helps a person to more easily
summarize a passage and understand what the reading selection is mostly about.
