UNTOLD FACTS ABOUT CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS With Columbus Day approaching, here are some eye raising facts about Christopher Columbus which go against the myth we’ve learned in our history classes. Did Columbus prove that the Earth is round? We have long been taught that when Columbus set sail in 1492 “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue”to find a new route to the East Indies, it was feared he would fall off the edge of the Earth because people then thought the planet was flat. Forget those myths spread by everyone, there was no need for Columbus to discredit that myth, the ancient Greeks had already done so. As early as 600 BC, the Greek mathematician Pythagoras concluded the world was round. By 1492 most educated people knew the planet was not flat. Were the famous names of the ships really the Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria? In 15thcentury Spain, ships were traditionally named after saints. The Niña is believed to be named the Nina in honor of its owner, Juan Nino. Although the Santa Maria is called by its official name, its nickname was La Gallega, and the Pinta is Spanish for “the painted one” or “prostitute,” though the ship’s real name is unknown. On Christmas Eve of 1492, a cabin boy ran the Santa Maria into a coral reef on the northern coast of Hispaniola, near presentday Cap Haitien, Haiti. Did Columbus discover America? During four separate trips that started with the one in 1492, Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands that are now the Bahamas as well as the island later called Hispaniola. He also explored the Central and South American coasts. But he didn’t reach North America, which, of course, was already occupied by Native Americans, the Native Americans discovered North America about 14,000 years before Columbus was even born! Was Columbus was a saint or brutal ruler of the Caribbean islands? Columbus landed in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492, he discovered that the islands were populated by friendly, peaceful people called the Lucayans, Taínos and Arawaks (American Indians of the Caribbean and Florida). Columbus wrote in his diary that they were handsome, smart and kind people. He noted that the gentle Arawaks were remarkably hospitable. The Arawaks had no weapons; their society had neither criminals, prisons nor prisoners. They were so kind- hearted that Columbus noted in his diary that on the day the Santa Maria was shipwrecked, the Arawaks labored for hours to save his crew and cargo, they were so honest that not one thing was missing. Columbus was so impressed with their hard work that he immediately seized their land for Spain and enslaved them to work in his brutal gold mines. Within only two years, half of the population of the original natives on the island were dead. Columbus supervised the selling of native girls into sexual slavery. In 1500, Columbus wrote about it in his log. He forced the natives to work in his gold mines until they died of exhaustion. Columbus’ acts of cruelty were so terrible - even in his own day - that Governor Francisco De Bobadilla arrested Columbus and his two brothers, chained and shipped them off to Spain to answer for their crimes against the Arawaks. The King and Queen of Spain pardoned Columbus and let him go because he provided them with an abundance of gold. Even with all the gold he found, most of his income was earned from slavery. After all that we just learned, the question stands, why do we celebrate Columbus Day? The first Columbus Day celebration recorded in the United States was in New York on October 12, 1792, held to honor ItalianAmerican heritage. In 1937, President Roosevelt proclaimed October 12th to be Columbus Day, a national holiday. In 1971, the holiday date was changed to the second Monday in October. For various reasons, many places have changed the name of the holiday. In 1992, Berkeley, California, replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day to honor the original people of the islands where Columbus landed. In 1989, South Dakota started calling the holiday Native American Day. Alabama celebrates a combination of Columbus Day and American Indian Heritage Day, and Hawaii calls it Discovery Day. Other countries also celebrate this day with different holidays; for example, in the Bahamas, it is called Discovery Day, and as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain. Maybe we need to create a holiday to replace Columbus Day. Page Page22 KITTY KUBS What You Need 8 white bread slices (optional) 8 slices OSCAR MAYER Bologna 4 KRAFT Singles 1 Tbsp.
