barry trotter

DAILY SPARK
In literature, a PARODY is a text that makes
fun of another book, usually by imitating the
author's style to comic effect. A writer named
Michael Gerber recently wrote a parody called
Barry Trotter and the Unauthorized Parody. You
can probably guess which book it satirizes.

BARRY TROTTER
Think of a book you’ve read recently and write a
short parody of it. Try to imitate the author’s
style.

Rime (pp. 522-523)
➔ Consonance, a kind of slant rime, occurs when the rimed
words or phrases have the same beginning and ending
consonant sounds but a different vowel: chitter and chatter,
spilled and spoiled.
➔ Masculine rime is a rime of one-syllable words (jail, bail) or
(in words of more than one syllable) stressed final syllables:
di-VORCE, re-MORSE.
➔ Feminine rime is a rime of two or more syllables, with stress
on a syllable other than the last: TUR-tle, FER-tile, or (to
take an example from Byron) in-tel-LECT-u-al, hen-Pecked
you all.

Chappell on p. 525
■ Consider masculine and feminine
rimes. Which lines end in each? Are
there any examples of consonance in
the poem?
■ Also consider the 3 questions that follow
the poem on page 525. Answer them
briefly in your notebook and be prepared
to discuss them.
DAILY SPARK

Bubba’s is, hands down, the best barbecue
restaurant in the country. Anyone who tells you
differently is just stupid. Their ribs are huge and
juicy; their coleslaw is creamy; and most
importantly, everyone on their waitstaff is
stunningly beautiful. The absolute best thing about
Bubba’s is their incredible barbecue sauce. I think
Bubba’s mother came up with the recipe originally.
It’s so good that is could convert vegetarians to

Rime (pp. 522-523)
➔ In eye rime, spellings look alike but pronunciations
differ--rough and dough, idea and flea, Venus and menus.
➔ Rime in American poetry suffered a significant fall from favor
in the early 1960s.
◆Modeled
poetry on the open forms of Whitman, Pound, and
William Carlos Williams.
➔ Recently, the New Formalists, have been skillfully using
rime again in their works.

◆Poems use rime and meter to present unusual contemporary
subjects, but they also write poems that recollect, converse, and
argue with the poetry of the past.
