SCI 302 - MOLTEN SALT NUCLEAR REACTORS
WHEN: Monday, July 17 & 24
TIME: 1pm-3pm
WHERE: USCB Bluffton Campus, Hargray 156
COST: OLLI members Free, Non-OLLI members $10
9
Are we in the midst of a nuclear renaissance in power production, or has the Fukushima
event and inexpensive natural gas made nuclear power irrelevant? While the reactor
design used in almost all nuclear power plants has changed little in the past decades,
there is a reactor design, the Molten Salt Reactor, that is said to be intrinsically safe
(walk-away safe), to be proliferation resistant and not to produce radioactive waste that
has to be safeguarded for tens of thousands of years. Some cost analyses show that
reactors building on this design could produce electricity more cheaply than coal or
natural gas, potentially using a fuel cycle that is almost inexhaustible. A simplified
version of this reactor design has been demonstrated experimentally at the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory in the 1960s. Now multiple companies around the globe are
working to commercialize variants of this design. Is this too good to be true? This
lecture will review the Oak Ridge experiments and subsequent concept designs, and
will discuss several of the design variants that are in some stage of development,
including their strengths and weaknesses.
INSTRUCTOR: BILL JORDAN has a Ph.D. in Nuclear Chemistry from the University of
Pittsburgh. During his career at Bell Laboratories, he worked in various research areas.
He has presented OLLI classes in several areas of science and technology.
