This itinerary, one of the highly successful and innovative travel programs in the VILLAGE LIFE series, is ideal for exploring the region’s ancient history and learning the authentic culture and way of life of its people. More than 3,500 years ago, the ancient Mycenaeans constructed one of the earliest great civilizations on the archipelago stretching from Greece to Turkey, across what the legendary bard Homer called the “wine-dark” waters of the Aegean Sea. This world of classical ruins, rustic whitewashed houses and bright sandy beaches is infused with the spirits of mythical figures from Olympian gods, sea nymphs and Argonauts to Hercules, Hera, and Helen of Troy. Here, explore the fascinating culture and history of the Aegean Sea during this seven-night cruise encompassing the islands of Delos, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes and Pátmos, and the scenic coast of Turkey to visit Troy, site of Achilles’ mythical exploits, and Ephesus, the best preserved and most spectacular Greco-Roman city in the world. Travel aboard the exclusively chartered M.S. LE DIAMANT, offering state-of-the-art amenities, high standards of comfort and service, and the distinctive cruising experience only a small oceangoing ship can provide. Among the many features of this travel program is the unique VILLAGE FORUM, where local residents share their perspectives and insights into life in the Greek Isles. To further enhance your understanding of the traditions and history of this region, this program also includes exclusive guided excursions, lectures and opportunities to experience local culture and traditions. The camaraderie of fellow alumnae and alumni, the exceptional value including accommodations, meals and excursions, and the convenience of unpacking only once come together with a fascinating destination to create a truly enticing program that will sell out quickly—so make your reservation today! Today, the city’s ancient greatness is encapsulated in the spectacular Acropolis, the political and spiritual center of ancient Athens, which still commands the city’s skyline. Here, step back 2,500 years while looking over the city of Athens and standing before the gracefully proportioned Parthenon, a perfectly executed work of Doric architecture dedicated to the goddess Athena in 438 B.C. v ATHENS, GREECE GREECE Aegean Sea TURKEY Cappadocia • Athens • • Ephesus Mykonos •Kusadasi Piraeus• ¸ •• • Patmos ´ Delos Santorini • • Rhodes whitewashed houses and golden sandy beaches, it epitomizes life in the Greek Isles. The labyrinth of dazzling white alleys and cube-shaped houses of Mykonos Town was deliberately designed both to block the winds and to confound raiding pirates. From the dawn of Greek civilization, Delos held an esteemed position as one of the most sacred islands in the Greek world. The mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, it was as central to Greek spiritual life as Olympia or Delphi. Drawing close to the shore, gaze upon the magnificent Lion Terrace—sleek marble lions carved from Náxian marble in the seventh century B.C. The Sanctuary of Apollo is a spectacularly rich archaeological site with remains of three separate temples from the fifth and sixth centuries B.C. Delos’ awe-inspiring ruins also include an entire district of ancient houses dating from 700 B.C. and the ancient Theater built in 300 B.C. Especially fascinating is the House of the Dolphins, where intricate mosaics crafted in the second century B.C. elegantly depict a dolphin swimming around an anchor, a common motif throughout Delos. Wake to awe-inspiring black cliffs soaring above the ship in Santorini, the “black pearl of the Aegean.” A cable car rises above Santorini to the town of Thíra, whose stunning white walls stand in stark contrast against the dark volcanic cliffs. The picturesque village of Oia, renowned for its traditional architecture and cliffside setting, offers spectacular panoramic views of the island’s coastline and the surrounding seas. Far below, in what remains of an extinct volcano’s caldera, may be the legendary remains of Atlantis— possibly lost during a cataclysmic volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C. MYKONOS, GREECE RHODES, GREECE According to ancient legend, this island’s craggy hills and clefts were formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. With charming windmills, SANTORINI (OIA), GREECE Located closer to Turkey than to mainland Greece, Rhodes has been one of the most prosperous islands and important strategic strongholds in the eastern Mediterranean since the dawn of history. Its most important cultural center, Rhodes Town, is an extraordinarily well-preserved medieval city. Built over a great Hellenistic metropolis, its monuments and architectural styles reflect the past rule of the Byzantines, Ottomans and the crusading Knights of St. John, who erected the splendid 14th-century fortifications of the Palace of the Grand Masters. ´ PATMOS , GREECE Explore the glories of Delos where these lions were masterfully crafted 600 years before Christ. Known as the “Jerusalem of the Aegean,” Pátmos is the island where St. John the Divine received the vision of fire and brimstone in A.D. 95 that he dictated as Today, the original fort (restored) still stands atop a small island linked to the shore by a narrow causeway, while the town itself offers a unique opportunity to bargain for Turkish carpets or sample a taste of Turkey’s legendary cuisine while overlooking the blue waters of the Aegean. ÇANAKKALE (TROY), TURKEY Stroll along the Arcadiana as you approach the Library of Celsus, an ancient symbol of Ephesus’ power. the Book of Revelation. Founded in 1088, the Monastery of St. John was built to protect priceless religious treasures and the Cave of the Apocalypse where St. John is said to have received his vision. EPHESUS, TURKEY Accessible from the Turkish port of Kuşadasi through the sunflowerbrightened countryside, the extensive ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus are among the world’s greatest relics of antiquity. The location of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and later one of the Roman Empire’s regional capitals, Ephesus holds astonishing memorials to its importance in ancient times. The multi-story Library of Celsus is a breathtaking example of Greco-Roman architecture. Harbor Street, or Arcadiana, was one of the few illuminated roads during the classical period, and the Marble Way leads to the astonishing 24,000-seat amphitheater, where gladiators battled and St. Paul preached to some of the world’s first Christians. The role of Ephesus in early Christianity is further manifested in the nearby ruins of the Basilica of St. John, constructed by Emperor Justinian in the sixth-century on the burial site of St. John the Apostle, author of the Gospel of St. John. Located near the port of Çanakkale on Turkey’s Aegean coast, the ancient city of Troy was immortalized by Homer in The Iliad, which chronicled the Trojan Wars of the 13th century B.C. and inspired many of the tales central to ancient Greek mythology. Explore remnants of the Bronze Age citadel and ruins of the sixth-century B.C. Temple of Athena and the Roman Theater, and see how over the millennia subsequent civilizations built nine new cities and settlements over those of their predecessors. ISTANBUL, TURKEY Acclaimed for centuries as “the city of the world’s desire,” this legendary city overlooking the Bosphorus Straits was established by Constantine the Great as the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire in A.D. 330. Originally known as Constantinople, it grew during the Byzantine and Ottoman eras to become the most magnificent city in the western world and the center of the glorious Ottoman empire. A thriving and cosmopolitan city, Istanbul offers an unmatched collection of historic landmarks including Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and houses one of the world’s largest and most colorful bazaars. KU ŞADASI, TURKEY A lively Aegean resort known for its bazaars, seaside restaurants, and beaches Kuşadasi—whose name means “bird island”—was a minor Genoese naval outpost settled in the 14th century.
