“He must become greater, I must become less” John 3:30 Sioux Falls Christian Schools Newsletter April 19, 2017 Principally Speaking . . . . . Mr. Covey From the Mountain Tops? Do you remember singing the song “It Only Takes a Spark”? Some of you may have fond memories of this song from Sunday school and/or Bible school/camps. It was one of my favorites. I haven’t sung it for years, but I could still sing it to you by heart. The line, “I’ll shout it from the mountain tops, hey world!”, refers to our telling others about Christ’s love for them. The song is wonderful, and there is nothing wrong with shouting about Christ’s love from the mountain tops. We should tell the world about Christ’s love whenever and wherever; but as a strategy to fulfill the great commission? I am not so sure. Those of us who are Christians are keenly aware of the need for those who don’t know Christ to hear about the Truth He has shared with us in His Word. However, Satan is inventing new ways to mess people up every day, and technology has seemingly sped up the pace (I don’t have any quantitative evidence of this, but it seems to be the case in the American culture.) As a Christian I often wonder how often I “shout” God’s truth to others (believers and nonbelievers alike) from a “mountaintop” rather than sharing Truth in relationship. “Mountaintops”, of course, are an analogy in the context of current culture for social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. How about you? How often do you “shout” Truth from these “mountaintops?” And what’s with the shouting? How effective is that tone? Do you respond well when someone is screaming at you? How often did Jesus yell at people? And yes, he did yell, but I would argue He was very selective when He employed this communicative strategy. There has to be an argument for sharing the Truth of Christ’s love utilizing relationships with others rather than screaming at the top of our lungs across the valleys of social media . . . doesn’t there? What do you think? Should we be against social media as a tool to fulfill the Great Commission? Not at all. It has its place. However, 1 Peter 3:15 tells us to share our hope in Christ with “gentleness and respect.” As Christian’s, we have to be mindful of this biblical exhortation. As a Christian school community, let’s be mindful that we are being held to a higher standard. Others associate our (teachers, administration, parents, grandparents) actions with Sioux Falls Christian (I would argue even more so than the church you attend or the workplace you are part of). They will then connect our association with Sioux Falls Christian with Christianity. Handling God’s Truth carelessly can do more to repel those searching for Truth than draw them closer to it. The song “It Only Takes a Spark” was intended to serve as an analogy for the warmth of God’s love for humankind and His desire that we all seek Him. Let’s be careful to draw others towards the glow of His love by being gentle and respectful with all who are searching and those who vehemently disagree. This is God’s command for us. Spring Play This Week! SFC’s Fine Arts Department is presenting The Diary of Anne Frank, this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in the MS Gym. In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne Frank emerges from history as a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl, who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit, and determination. As you observe the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic, the story captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence — their fear, hope, laughter, and grief. Each day of these two dark years, Anne's voice shines through: "When I write I shake off all my cares. But I want to achieve more than that. I want to be useful and bring enjoyment to all people, even those I've never met. I want to go on living even after my death!" Recommended ages to attend is middle school and up.
