The Flower

The critters that live at Whippoorwill Farm
will have peace and quiet until Monday, July
11 when we resume playing in the woods out
here after the 4th of July week off.
This week as usual, kids found many
crawdads, a 2 inch tree frog that has amazing
pads for toes allowing him to jump across the
small aquarium and stick to the glass sides,
two tadpoles that started the week with only
their tails now have four feet and still have
their tails two tadpoles that have two legs. We
also found several black beetles and a leech.
On Wednesday afternoon, Log Cabin camper
Dru Cox helped to identify and collar a 13”
inch Northern Water Snake
In the 100 gallon aquarium in the Nature
Museum, we have a 15 inch smallmouth
Bass, a 15 inch Catfish and a 6 inch Sunfish.
The Bass gobbles up anything we offer them
to eat (mostly worms and crayfish). The
Catfish hides out in the lower right corner
of the aquarium. This Friday we will release
the three fish from the aquarium back into
the pond. All the other live critters will be
released into the habitat where we found them
as much as possible.
There was a flower. It was beautiful. It shines in the sun
and one day a princess found the flower and she placed it on a
brown rock. She put it in her father’s hand and the castle was
gone and she went on a journey to find her through many tests
but she finally found it and she lived happily ever after.
The Magic Broom which goes to the
cleanest camp all week belongs to
Teepee
for session 5. Great job Teepee camp
for keeping your camp clean!
Pottery
By: Lindsay • Bear Cub
Today me and Jessica and some other girls
went to make pottery at the art place. We
made a pocket. We made it out of clay. And
then we painted it.
Riding Jazzy
By: Dottie Eastwood • Log Cabin
Today I rode Jazzy the horse and she was so calm. She
was also so small but the perfect size. I had a wonderful time
riding the horses. I think everyone should have a chance to
ride the horses.
I really want to do zip line and I will defiantly do it this
week. I think it was a lot of fun even though I am afraid of
heights wishe me luck!
Margaret, the Bear Fighter
By: Bradley G • Teepee
I don’t know if you guys knew this, but Margaret, the
ropes director, happens to be an excellent bear fighter. This
past Tuesday, while four brave campers were tree climbing, a
big, angry bear emerged from the forest! The campers started
screaming in horror, but not MARGARET! She shouted
“fear not, young campers!” I was trained in the valleys of
ancient Russia to combat all types of bears! Raaghhaghh!
She let out a fierce battle cry and charged the bear yielding
only her super fists. She beat that bear up so badly that he
run away crying for his mommy! This is why Margaret is so
cool. She is my hero!
Fun
By: Hannah Fisch • Log Cabin
On Tuesday it rained a lot so we went in the field and
played windmill tag. It was sooo fun and my cousin Ellie
and me hung out together all week. So we like did everything together. Camp Whippoorwill is SOOOOO much fun
and awesome!

Session 5: June 27 - July 1, 2011
American Pride Week
Session 5 celebrated American Pride and what better way to celebrate then with real life cowboys, a parade
and a spectacular firework display during the daytime? Campers were visited by Adam Jensen and DJ Roberts . Adam and his brother Cody are both members of the Tennessee High School Rodeo Association and compete on a regional and
national level in team roping. The boys demonstrated with their
horse Biscuit and their plastic “calf” the proper technique to rope a
calf. Some campers and a few counselors even got the opportunity
to try their hand at roping. It’s a lot harder than it looks.
On Friday, camp will celebrate the 4th of July a little early with a
parade hosted by Teepee camp, followed by a firework show put on
by a local firework business. It was a very busy & patriotic week!
About Whippoorwill
By: Davis Key • Log Cabin
I like Whippoorwill. They have horses, tie-dye,
shirts, pool, creeks, a zip line, archery, and kayaking. My favorite activity is zip line. I like it because
is so much fun you can do front flips on it. I road to
camp on the red fox. The bus ride is very bumpy and
you always squished but it is still really fun. And you
make new friends. There are four different busses;
The red fox, the purple parrot, the orange turkey, and
the green lizard.
Change for our Troops
This year at Camp Whippoorwill, we are showing
our support to our Marines and sponsoring a unit
currently deployed to Afghanistan. All summer long
our campers are making cards, banners, cookies and
collecting change for our troops. We have collected
over $300 dollars in change. We will be collecting
change for our troops all summer so keep finding
those coins! Thank you to all our campers for showing your support and helping out.
Whippoorwill’s Haunted
Shack
By: Rebecca Page – McCaw • Teepee
Whippoorwill has a haunted old shack on the
creek. Some campers go down there at creek hike.
As you near the old shack, the water grows straight
and the rocks become slippery. Suddenly nobody
wants to be at the back of the group anymore. Splash
Splash. Our feet move slowly as me round the corner
and the old comes into view. It is old and abandoned
and creepy. We can hear every noise from the gurgle
of the stream to the squeaking of the old tire swing
on the mold wooden porch. The wing moves with no
wind. Though no one admits they are scared we all
move closer together. “I’m going in” someone says.
The waters swish as they walk to the shore and then
push their way through the old house. We all tried to
convince ourselves there is nothing to be scared of.
“It’s Okay” the call comes from the porch. Everyone
relaxes. Really nothing to be afraid of.

The hilltop barn has 14 solar panels generating electricity for the camp. We have our best generation day this week,
22.8 kilowatts. On any given cloudy day we only make 18
kilowatts. Campers can write their name using the sun’s energy and learn about watts, kilowatts, and mega watts.

By: Emily • Log Cabin
Tuesday I did a posting trot on Jazzy the Horse. A posting trot is when you trot on the horse and push
up with your leg muscle and go down like a pattern. At first it was fast so I said “Woah”, so I would not
fall. Then I got the hang of it and went on with it. After that we ride on the trail. The End!
