The total number of years is 5.5 years (11 semesters), consists of a minimum of 7 (seven) semesters in
the academic stage and 4 (four) semesters in the clinical (profession) stage
Eighty percent (80%) of the curriculum in each medical school must be developed based on the
National Standard of Indonesian Medical Doctors Competency. Around 20% of the curriculum may be
designed to reflect local needs (differ among medical schools).
The structure of medical education consists of academic stage (minimum of 7 semesters) and
clinical/profession stage (minimum of 4 semesters). The number of credit units in the academic stage is
around 140 credit units and around 70 credit units for the clinical stage. The number of credit units may
differ between each medical school, but the general rule is around 20 credit units in each semester (1618 weeks).

The arrangement of subjects in the form of modules/blocks/units is designed and developed by each
medical school, however the curriculum of medical schools should consists of the following subjects, as
listed in the National Standard of Medical Education Program and National Standard of Indonesian
Medical Doctors Competency:

microbiology, parasitology, anatomy pathology, clinical pathology, pharmacology
Humanistic science: medical education, health behavioural sciences, medical sociology, medical
anthropology, religion, bioethics and medical laws, language, Pancasila and nationality
Clinical medicine: internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetric and gynecology, neurology,
psychiatry, dermatovenerology, ophthalmology, ENT, clinical nutrition, radiology, anesthesiology,

Community medicine science: biostatistics, epidemiology, population health, family medicine,
occupational medicine, environmental health, health management and policy, social and
behavioural science and community nutrition.
At least 50% of the materials/subjects in the curriculum must be delivered using an integrated
approach (both vertical and horizontal integration).
Each medical school should design elective components to enable medical students explore and study
specific subjects according to their interests

Assessment system is designed by each medical school with reference to some general rules: 1)
assessment system must be able to assess students' attainment of the pre-determined competencies,
2) pass/fail standard is determined using the criterion-referenced method, 3) both hard and soft skills
must be assessed, 4) the principles of validity, reliability, feasibility and educational impact must be
taken into consideration when designing the assessment system.
Common assessment methods: written assessment (for example: MCQ, essay, MEQ/modified essay
questions), skills/performance based asssessment (for example: OSPE/Objective Structured Practical
Examination, OSCE/Objective Structured Clinical Examination, long case examination, checklist),
logbook and portfolio. Students are also assessed through case reports/presentations, research
projects and written papers.
