Bolivia and Peru. Fulbright Professor in Brazil with research collaboration on genetic resource
conservation and development of sugarcane, soybean, pineapple, and wheat (1991). Ten-year
(1989–98) collaboration with an international consortium of organizations in Brazil, Columbia,
Mauritius, and the United States supporting development of sugarcane for fuel ethanol. The

National Professional Service
National Science Foundation, National Evolution Synthesis Center Task Force —Reporting
Across the Culture Wars: Engaging the Media on Evolution, 2013–present. Member of a task
force consisting of university scientists, popular-science book authors, and national media
representatives organized by the National Evolution Synthesis Center at Duke University and
funded by the National Science Foundation to improve the quality and accuracy of national
and global media coverage on evolution.
U.S. Department of State, Global Innovation Through Science and Technology (GIST), 2012–
2013. Panel member for judging proposals submitted by scientists in economically
impoverished countries through a U.S. Department of State sponsored program to promote
appropriate technologies aimed at generating profitable small-scale business ventures in the
sciences.
Peer Reviewer, 1988–present. Peer-reviewer for manuscripts submitted to scientific and
education journals, peer reviewer for competitive grants programs sponsored by the National
Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

State and Regional Professional Service
Utah Science and Mathematics Education Consortium, 2009–present. Current chair of
consortium, which was instituted in 2009 as a group of leaders in science and mathematics
representing major educational, governmental, and private institutions in the State of Utah. It
consists of all the deans of science and mathematics from USHE institutions, Brigham Young
University, and Westminster College, and representatives from the Utah Board of Regents,
the Utah State Office of Education, the Office of the Governor, and leaders of commerce and
industry organizations. I was one of the founding officers (secretary/treasurer) in 2009 and
have been serving as chair since January 2013.
Utah State Office of Education–University Partnership on Evolution Education in Public Schools.
Member of a group of university faculty with specialties in evolution and science education
who in collaboration with the Utah State Office of Education present half-day workshops at
teacher development meetings throughout the state and at national conferences. Our objective
is to assist science teachers with resources and recommendations on teaching evolution. Our
work has been published in the journal Evolution Education and Outreach and we have
presented invited workshops for the National Science Teachers Association in Dallas and
Baltimore.
