Thursday 2nd February, 2017 Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members, It’s been a great start to the year, with learning well and truly underway in all classrooms. I have greatly enjoyed visiting the classrooms each day, and have been very impressed with the work ethic and focus that I have seen from our students. It also makes me feel so proud to walk around the school each morning and hear the students greeting each other and their teachers so warmly – well done! Instrumental Music forms were sent home on Monday for students from Yr 36 who have expressed interest in learning a strings instrument this year. If any students missed out on a note please see the office to collect one. All notes must be returned to school by this Friday 3rd February which is when instruments will be allocated and lessons will commence. Instrumental Music lessons will run every Friday morning so it is important that students remember to bring their instruments on this day so that they don’t miss out on their lesson. Yesterday our Year 3–6 students Received a visit from the North Queensland Cowboys Development Team. Our students greatly enjoyed participating in a variety of games and learning new skills! This term our school will once again be offering soccer lessons after school on Friday afternoons through the Jamie Gosling Football Academy. Lessons will run from 3:00 – 4:00pm, starting in Week 3. For more information or to register your child please see the attached flyer. There are still a number of students who have not yet purchased book packs. It is important that students have the materials that they need to start the school year, and their learning may be compromised if they don’t have the books or equipment required for their lessons. If you have not yet purchased school supplies for your child/ren, please contact our school office or P&C as soon as possible to arrange payment. Supplies will then be delivered to your child’s class. News from the Prep Classroom – Miss Mason Thank you to all the parents who have purchased book packs, hats and uniforms. Students were all prepared for their first year at school so we were able to dive into learning straight away. Last week, we learnt about the letter ‘s’ and the number ‘1’. We made pop out snakes and practised our handwriting each day. In Science, we are learning about Minibeasts so we are looking closely at insects in our area. We have made ladybugs and ants and labelled our Discovery Table. If you find an interesting creature at home, please send them in a sealed container for display. Our Indoor Explore Group Rotations this week have included playdough, construction, painting, computers, threading, gluing and cutting. Our timetable is near the Storytelling Chair, so come and check it out in the mornings to see what we are up to. Sight words and Home Readers have started this week, so please read with your child each night. Read each book 3 times (I do, We do, You do) and return the folder EVERY DAY so that your child receives a new book each night. Practise Sight Words as a warm up to reading. If your child knows a word, they can colour in the word. They will be tested at the end of each week at school. Thank you again for your wonderful attendance and support at the Parent Info afternoon. If you missed it, please come and collect an Information Letter (in the box near the door). News from the Year 1/2 Classroom – Mrs McCarthy The year 1/2 class has had a wonderful week. The students have been settling in well and have been earning lots of points for good behaviour. Our morning routine includes firstly using the calendar to find the day and date, we then have handwriting time. The improvement in handwriting over just these 2 weeks is fantastic. We are spelling everyday and are practising our sight words. In maths we are adding groups of numbers from 1 to 10 and the kids are loving our new maths plus textbook. We have also been on a science safari finding bugs and other living creatures in our school yard. Home reading has begun this week. Reading is very important so don’t forget to read each night and return your home reading folder every day for a new book. Parents can make make a comment about your child’s reading. I am very excited about teaching the 1/2s. We are going to have a great year! News from the Year 3/4 Classroom – Miss Roe It was predicted in the stars that 2017 would be a year of exciting new beginnings, so with that I am very excited to be teaching 3/4 this year. I am extremely blessed to be teaching every single student in my class, each one unique and capable within their own right. Week 1 was a crazy week of sorting and shuffling and getting to know one another, students working well together and welcoming the new pupils who have joined our class. As a new year begins, students have done a wonderful job of remembering and following class and school expectations even with new routines set in place. I’d like to remind parents of crunch and sip break in which a piece of fruit or vegetable only can be brought in to snack on during the morning session. Sports is on Tuesdays and Music and Library on Thursdays. If it is possible, please send a library bag in with your child on Thursdays in case they would like to return and/or borrow a book. I wish everyone a beautiful Week 2! News from the Year 5/6 Classroom – Mrs Newcombe Welcome to the Senior Class of 2017! This year our class is made up of Year 5 and 6 students who have all managed to settle in well to their new class. We have been busy learning about different strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. Students have also started their Science unit which will focus on the ‘Living Environment’ where they will investigate living things and how they grow and adapt. They are also excited about their Art unit – ‘The Animal Within’, where they will investigate different animals that represent their own personality. I have also started to settle in to this lovely school and fabulous 5/6 class. The students have been extremely helpful – especially reminding me when the bell has rung for lunch! I look forward to a great year of learning together. A quick reminder to all students that PE is held on Tuesdays, Library and Music classes on Thursdays. Please remember to bring a hat and water bottle on Tuesdays and a library bag on Thursdays. Also, Year 6 students have been given a note about their senior shirts. This note is due back to school by Friday 10 February. Please do not forget – we don’t want anybody to miss out on their 2017 senior shirt! TUCKSHOP NEWS Hi from the Tuckshop! We operate 9.30 - 11.30am on Mondays, Wednesday & Fridays creating healthy & delicious meals for Machans Beach School kids. This term we are serving Chicken Quesadillas on Fridays. Quesadillas originated in Mexico, and are made by toasting flat a tortilla or wrap filled with chicken & cheese with some vegies snuck in! They are then cut into wedges & served with sour cream. Yum! Come & visit us anytime, we still need a few more parents volunteers to help out for only 2 hours a week. Thank you to those who have already put their hands up! Until next time, Emma Outside School Hours Care P: 0456588886 E: [email protected] Last week we got straight back into before and after school care action! We have a mayfly larvae which we are nurturing until it becomes the mayfly! P: 0456 588 886 Raff and Marley took it outside for a walk to collect some green ants for it to eat! Marley and Lilly collected star fruit. We didn’t eat them but it was fun to see how many could fit into their t-shirts and then cut them and see their star shape. Ping pong was popular as were the hamburgers on Friday afternoon!
