Letter from College President
and Board Chair
Change is inevitable. Change is what makes us aspire to be better. It is necessary in order to
stay relevant in today’s fluid economy and in the rapidly changing face of higher education.
Ultimately, change is what keeps us innovative.
Throughout 2013, the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences was no stranger to change,
not only accepting it, but anticipating and embracing it.
This was a milestone year for our College. We began the year as the Lancaster General
College of Nursing & Health Sciences. We ended the year as the Pennsylvania College of
Health Sciences. Our new name is the culmination of an extensive branding initiative. Our
new brand promise underscores the fact that the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences
remains focused on successfully preparing learners with the knowledge and skills necessary
to meet the challenging demands of a reforming health care environment.
The past year has also witnessed positive strides in the implementation of our Comprehensive
Institutional Blueprint. The College has made upgrading its technology a priority and as such
has made significant investment in this area over the past year that included infrastructure and
software upgrades and staffing expansions. In addition, we initiated a robust, comprehensive
training initiative for faculty to assist them in better utilization of the College’s current and
planned technology upgrades.
In an effort to broaden our geographical reach, we began online educational programming,
offering our RN-BSN program in a fully online format in addition to face to face. In preparation
for this inaugural event, seven primary faculty participated in a 10-week Sloan-C Teaching
Certificate program, nationally recognized as a thorough preparation for faculty members who
are teaching online.
This past year 1,375 learners were enrolled in the College, once again setting a record for the
number of students enrolled in a given year. Our commitment to a transformative educational
experience was witnessed in the classroom, in clinical and laboratory settings, and throughout
the campus. The continuing increase in enrollment has challenged our existing physical space.
Currently, the Board of Trustees and College Administration are evaluating the need for
additional space and are working diligently to determine the most appropriate, cost-effective
answer to address this ongoing issue.
As you review this annual report, you will discover more of the hidden moments in the daily
life of our College. From numerous new initiatives to an operating surplus, it was indeed a
year to remember.
We are thankful for the continued support of alumni, donors and friends. That support
energizes our College Community, ensures our future success, and allows us to engage our
students in rigorous programs of study that will prepare them to meet the challenges they
will face in a complex and rapidly changing health care arena. We are also grateful for the
dedication, hard work and leadership of our Board of Trustees, faculty and staff. Because
of their efforts, Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences is well-positioned for a strong
and vibrant future. We can all look back at 2012-2013 with pride and look forward with
confidence and a sense of excitement as a new chapter in our College’s history unfolds.

Remembering Anna Lombardo
Anna Lombardo impacted many people during her career in central Pennsylvania as a
nurse, and her family has insured that her legacy will continue to impact many more lives in
the future.
Miss Lombardo graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. She valued
education and obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1960. Following graduation, she worked at
St. Joseph’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital, and she shared her love for nursing by
passing on her knowledge and skills through teaching at Vo–Tech in Willow Street.
After retiring from LGH, she continued to give back to the community by volunteering at St.
Anne’s Retirement Village in Columbia. When she passed at age 94, she left her estate to her
nieces and nephews who share fond memories of her and her love of nursing.
They wanted to do something special in her memory and endowed the Anna A. Lombardo
Scholarship for nursing students at the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. Future
nursing students will benefit from the generosity of her nine nieces and nephews who made
the gifts in memory of Miss Lombardo.
Her niece, Donna King, stated, “She loved working with the student nurses! We just made it
happen the way she would have if she had thought of creating a scholarship herself.” Their
generosity will keep her alive in the memory of students who receive her scholarship each year.
Pictured above: Lombardo’s 1951 class photo.

Fourteen faculty members submitted a portfolio and the selection committee chose the 2013
recipient: Dr. Krista White.
The student who nominated Dr. White wrote, “This particular faculty member showed dedication
by giving the class 100% of her time, every class. This time also extended outside of class as
well, as she was available as needed for students. She created games that were interactive
and fun for class lessons. Her teaching style was innovative and fun. She was very clear about
her expectations of the class and pushed the boundaries of your personal learning. Because
of this she made me more motivated to learn. Her consistent encouragement, commitment and

field. I am a better student and a
