Essen Haus History Essen Haus opened in early September, 1983, in the remodeled Wilson Street Dinner Theater. The building is best known as the site of the original Hoffman House, which was considered to be one of the best dining places in Madison in the 1940’s and 1950’s. The building is also part of the historic Germania Hotel built in 1863, the first to be built in the 500 block of East Wilson Street. The hotel is believed to have offered quarters to German immigrants new to the Madison area. Much of the original decor is revealed in the wooden floors and brick entryways. The Essen Haus is decorated with antique pieces, including one of the original cherrywood back bars from the Fauerbach Brewery, wine barrels made by Confederate German immigrants and a grand collection of bier steins and pilsners. The bar and oversized wooden booths overlook the stage area for nightly live oompah music. Your Essen Haus experience promises to be filled with good times, good food and good drinks.
