GLEN DOHERTY MEMORIAL FOUNDATION Glen Doherty was one of the four Americans killed in a terror attack in Benghazi, Libya on September 12, 2012. On September 11, 2012 insurgents attacked the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Glen fought hard throughout the night and saved many before succumbing to a mortar attack in the early hours of September 12th. Glen died serving with men he respected, protecting the freedoms we enjoy as Americans and doing something he loved. He is an American Hero to those who did not know him; but for those who did he is a best friend who leaves behind a giant hole in our hearts. One of the driving forces was to enable people like Glen to transition from being a SEAL to a successful civilian career. Glen always recognized that being a special-forces operator was a young man’s profession, but he continued to opt-into deployments until the end, at the age of 42. He loved everything about his deployments, but he chose to put himself in danger after many of his BUDs classmates had retired, at least in part, because he could not find the right job. We want to help other SEALs build the bridge from their success in the Navy to success in the profession of their choice! The Foundation’s Board of Directors is composed of three of Glen’s friends and his sister Kate Quigley. Each member brings a unique perspective to the foundation, one with a Political background, one Financial and two in the field of Marketing. We also rely on talented friends and spouses who bring other unique perspectives and skill sets to the foundation. Our goal is to keep expenses at a minimum and put our time and energy into fundraising and sourcing the right candidates for our scholarship opportunities. Glen believed that life should be earned by hard work and hard play. He believed that we should celebrate the beautiful world that we live in and recreate as much as humanly possible. We should also help others, and surround yourself with people that you respect, who challenge you and make you a better person. Through this Foundation our goal is to pay it forward, to spread Glen’s love and passion for life to as many individuals as possible. FUNDRAISING The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation is committed to preserving Glen’s memory and helping others through celebratory fundraising events. Thanks to the support of generous donors The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation has reached an important milestone. Our goal has always been to protect Glen’s legacy. His story is so important to his friends and family and we never want to forget. Your donations have allowed us to create an endowed scholarship in Glen’s Name in partnership with Scholars First. The endowment was seeded with $250,000 and we will continue to grow this account from events like The Boston Marathon, our Annual Memorial Road Race, The New York City Marathon and Corporate Sponsorships. We are growing and protecting the principle so that the GDMF will forever fund scholarships for Special Operations veterans and their dependents. Are you looking for a 501(c)3 organization to partner with for your fundraising idea or event? Contact a member of The GDMF team for more information on how to get your fundraiser off the ground. While in his Infantry and Security Forces School he was selected to the Second Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team Company (2nd FAST Co) in Yorktown, VA. He was a part of such security missions as the bombing of the US Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya in 1998 and the security of US Embassies in Kosovo and Macedonia during a time of civil unrest. David finished his time in FAST Co conducting Maritime operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. David moved onto Private Security work in Iraq and Afghanistan in May 2004 and stayed in this line of work until Dec 2014. David was inspired to move on from his security work in war zones when Glen fought and sacrificed so bravely in Libya. David has a wife Tricia and three young children, Isaiah 5, Annelise 2 and Luke 1 and they were huge motivating factors as to the new life changing move. In 2013, soon after the Boston Marathon bombings, David took the Massachusetts State Trooper Exam and passed with a score of 101 out of 102. As the war gets closer and closer to home, David believes his skills, experience and knowledge learned from his time in the military and security contracting will best be utilized serving as a Massachusetts State Trooper. The Trooper academy starts in October 2015 and The Glen Doherty Foundation Scholarship is helping out tremendously while David makes the transition from security work in war zones to full time Husband and Dad and eventually a Massachusetts State Trooper upon graduation in mid 2016. RICH PREUSS Rich Preuss grew up in South Bend, Indiana. He is the oldest of ten children, and he enjoys spending time with his family. Rich graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2007 with a B.S. in Physics with an Arabic language minor. He then served for seven years as an active duty Navy SEAL, deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan, Latin America and The Caribbean. He has held leadership positions in SEAL and allied foreign military units conducting a wide range of missions, from direct action combat to foreign internal defense and counter narcotics operations. Rich begins medical school in August, 2015, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine with the support of The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation. He plans to become a trauma surgeon, and will continue to serve in the SEAL Reserves. As a doctor, Rich will connect with veteran patients in a way that only a fellow combat veteran can, and he looks forward to serving veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as those from past wars. Additionally, he plans to work as a physician in suffering communities around the world that desperately need quality medical care, such as in war zones and areas suffering from natural disaster. He also hopes to join an expedition to the South Pole as the team doctor. Rich is grateful for a challenging and rewarding SEAL career that has led him to the medical profession and prepared him to succeed as a doctor. MATTHEW REITH Matthew Reith is a Active duty service member serving as a Navy SEAL. As a SEAL he has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
