few young ladies came and shook my hand to introduce themselves. A
special moment, I will treasure. All this and an Inset day too. We were
exploring how we can use technology to enhance learning and developing the
new curriculum for September 2014. The latter involved Year 5 and 6

SPORT
YEAR 8 BOYS' RUGBY
Rydon 19 : 12 Chatsmore
Rydon 5 : 12 St Andrews
Rydon played their second and third games of the League campaign
on Thursday, hoping to continue where they left off last week
against Shoreham Academy. Rydon went into these games with only
14 men, due to injuries and boys not turning up to play at 3pm.
Both games were played in what can only be described as a swamp.
Chatsmore's pitch was covered in large puddles with the majority of
the playing area under water and very very soft.
With only 14 men and key players missing, Rydon found it tough
going against a spirited Chatsmore team who were full of running.
Rydon went behind early on but responded well and scored a try of
their own from stand in Captain Jamie Davis with Freddie Cripps
converting in front of the posts. Just before the break Rydon were
caught out when Chatsmore got a second try to lead 12 : 7 at half
time.
With a quick start in the second half, Rydon played all the Rugby
and a strong run from Jamie Davis saw Rydon take the lead for the
first time with Freddie Cripps converting again to take the score to
14 : 12. Chatsmore continued to test the Rydon defence who were
standing firm. After several scrums, Jamie Davis once again scored
a try to put the game beyond Chatsmore with the last play of the
match to leave the final score 19 : 12.
The second game saw Rydon play St Andrews, a team that we had
beaten in a pre-season friendly 25 : 10. With one man short and
tired legs from the first game, this was going to be a difficult task for
Rydon against a strong running St Andrews team playing their first
game.
Both teams tested each other in the first half but neither could get a
score on the board leaving the half-time score 0 : 0.
St Andrews started to stretch Rydon in the second half and was
using their man advantage to great effect. They scored two quick
tries after they moved the ball wide to where they had an extra man.
Jamie Davis did score a late try but sadly St Andrews held out to win
12 : 5.
Next up for the Year 8 team are Steyning and Angmering.
YEAR 8 BOYS' RUGBY
WINDLESHAM 7'S 2014
On Wednesday the Year 8 Boys' Rugby team took part in the annual
Windlesham Rugby 7's Tournament. The competition includes 20
teams, 17 of which are private schools. Rydon have always competed
well in previous years and won the competition back in 2008.
Rydon were drawn in group C alongside Belmont, Brighton College,
Lingfield ND and the hosts Windlesham.
Rydon got off to a flying start with a 20 points to nil victory over
Lingfield. Harry Hartigan opened the scoring after some good
handling from the backs. Toby Baker showed his power and
strength and grabbed 3 tries to put the game beyond Lingfield.
Next up were the hosts Windlesham who always produce well
drilled sides. Windlesham's greater experience playing 7's Rugby
was the difference in this game when they ran out 19:12 winners.
Rydon were twice caught following the ball and not the man
allowing Windlesham to score twice in the first half. Rydon however
wasted two 3 man over laps which would have levelled the game up.
In the second half Rydon hit back with tries from Harry Hartigan
and Jamie Davis with Oli Vigar kicking one conversion.
Windlesham won the game with the last play when they were
awarded a harsh penalty and scored in the corner to win the game.
Rydon's third opponents were Belmont. This was an easy game for
Rydon who controlled it from start to finish. Rydon ran in four tries
coming from Toby Baker, Harry Larkin, Harry Hartigan and Max
Lowdell. Oli Vigar kicked one conversion to leave the final score
22:5.
Before the last game, Windlesham had drawn their last game to top
the group, so our game against Brighton College would see the
winner claim second place and go through to the quarter finals.
From the kick off, Luke Tolson fed the ball to Toby Baker who ran
clear to score within 10 seconds of the start. This lead was quickly
doubled when Max Lowdell went over for the second try of the
game. Into the second half Rydon continued to dominate with
Jamie Davis and Toby Baker having taken a rest to save their legs
for the quarter final. Rydon added two late tries through Oli Vigar
and Max Lowdell claiming his second. Brighton did get a try with
the last play leaving the final score 22:7 to Rydon.
The quarter final paired Rydon up with St Andrews Prep of
Eastbourne. St Andrews have won the competition many times in
the past and went into the knock out stages without conceding a
point.
This proved a tough game for Rydon. St Andrews showed their class
and experience at 7's Rugby winning the game 22:0.
This was a fantastic performance from the Rydon boys who were
knocked out by the eventual winners of the tournament. St
Andrews went on to beat Holmewood House in the final.
YEAR 7 BOYS' RUGBY
Year 7 Boys victorious in the mud
RYDON 25 : 10 SRW
On Monday the Rydon Year 7 Boys’ Rugby team played their second
game of the Season at home to Sir Robert Woodard. The pitch was
very wet and muddy in places.
In the early exchanges, both teams were committing themselves to
the tackle and working hard at the breakdown. The SRW team has
many big runners who were causing Rydon problems in defence. As
the first third wore on, Rydon started to show their class and it was
George Lock who opened the scoring when he powered through
several tackles to open the scoring.
SRW responded well and levelled the game just before the first third
ended.
Into the second third, both teams were still testing each other out.
Rydon were dominating the scrum with both teams winning their
own lineouts. It was a piece of individual brilliance that gave Rydon
their second try. Toby Taylor collected the ball from the ruck and
threw an excellent dummy to deceive 3 players to score in the
corner. SRW showed they were still in the game and levelled it up
just before the break. They could have taken the lead for the first
time only for Rydon to hold the ball up over the try line.
With the game hanging in the balance, the team that scored first in
the final third would probably go on and win. Captain Sam Hall
showed his class by scoring off the back of the scrum with a clever
run.
Cameron Reynolds put the game beyond the reach of SRW with a
strong run from one side of the pitch to the other. Sam Hall then
had the final say with another great run off the back of the scrum,
beating several tackles to score his second try.
This was a hard fought victory over a strong SRW team. An excellent
team performance with many players getting stronger and stronger
with every game.
YEAR 8 BOYS' RUGBY
Rydon 35 : 0 Shoreham
Rydon Boys smash up
Shoreham Academy
Rydon kicked off their Season with an away trip to Shoreham
Academy. On a heavy pitch, both teams were going to have to keep
the ball in hand and be patient to go through the phases.
With a few last minute changes, Rydon fielded a strong team led by
Captain Toby Baker. Rydon received the kick off and with their first
move of the game, Ashley Nimmo was put clear to run through and
score with ease under the posts. Oli Vigar converted.
Within several minutes Rydon scored their second try. Another
good break through the forwards and the ball was worked wide
where Max Lowdell handed off several tackles to score under the
posts. Oli Vigar converted once again.
Shoreham were struggling to cope with the power and size of
Rydon, with Jamie Davis at the centre of many attacks. Rydon
rounded off the half with another converted try, this time Toby
Baker went over, under the posts.
Into the second half, it was business as usual for the Rydon pack
that were dominating the breakdown and causing lots of problems
with ball in hand. Toby Baker grabbed his second of the game with
Vigar converting.
Harry Hartigan rounded off the game with the fifth try of the day.
This was a good performance from the boys who never had to work
too hard throughout the game.
Next up is Chatsmore and St Andrews.

Fairtrade Fortnight Cake Sale: Rydon pupils support Foncho to make bananas fair!
Congratulations and a big thank you to Year 7 & 8 pupils who organised a cake sale on Friday
7 March. Our pupils raised an amazing total of £93.70. This year, the proceeds will go to
supporting Foncho and his campaign to ‘make bananas fair‘ via The Fairtrade Foundation.
In Geography lessons, Year 7 pupils have
been finding out about where and how
bananas are grown, unpeeling the problem
of the unfair banana and looking at how
the Fairtrade mark supports growers and
their communities. This supports our
work as a Rights Respecting School.
The Geography Department would also like to thank all those parents
who supported in the baking and decorating of cakes.
