– we can only assume the injury occurred while he was on
it. I have never heard of a fractured splint bone in quite
such a position under the knee.
“It is terribly disappointing. He ran such a blinder at
Royal Ascot to finish a close third in a Group One on his
first run of the season. Everyone involved has been so
patient in allowing the horse to mature and develop.
Among the many top sprinters I have trained he is without
doubt the quickest.
“We have just got to hope that he recovers and can race
on but the advice is that the chances are 50/50 at best.”

INJURY RULES OUT
SECRET FOR SEASON
Smart sprinter Pearl Secret (Compton Place) has
suffered a freak injury and will miss the remainder of the
season.
Trained by David Barron for Qatar Racing, the four-yearold has fractured a splint bone in his near foreleg under his
knee, a position which leading vet Antony Clements
described as ‘extremely rare’. He is now undergoing
treatment at the trainer’s yard and vets are hopeful he will
make a full recovery.
The winner of four of his six starts, Pearl Secret posted
a career-best performance on his seasonal reappearance
in the Gr.1 King Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, finishing a
close third to Sole Power (Xaar). He had been reportedly
working brilliantly ahead of Friday’s Gr.2 King George
Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and was among the leading
contenders for next month’s Gr.1 Coolmore Nunthorpe
Stakes at York.
Barron, who said Pearl Secret is the best horse he has
trained, added: “He did his final piece of work before
Goodwood on Friday and was in great shape. I could not
have been happier with him. He pulled out perfectly sound
on Saturday and was fine when we put him on the walker

RUNNER IN LENNOX STAKES
Goodwood’s five-day ‘Glorious’ meeting starts today with
the feature races on the card the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes
for juveniles and the Gr.2 Lennox Stakes.
Nine horses have been declared for the Molecomb
Stakes, run over the track’s fast five furlongs, and it looks
an open race this year.
Richard Hannon is doubly represented and his stable
jockey Richard Hughes has opted to ride Anticipated

Stakes and, most recently, fifth to Vorda (Orpen) in the
Gr.2 Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte, a place ahead
of another of today’s rivals, the Mick Channon-trained
Ambiance (Camacho).
Supplicant (Kyllachy), trained by Richard Fahey for the
colt’s owner/breeders Cheveley Park Stud, is closely
matched with Anticipated on their Windsor Castle Stakes
running, as the son of Kyllachy finished a short head in
front, and the pair are likely to feature prominently in the
betting.
There are two fillies in the line-up, the trailblazing
Majestic Alexander (Bushranger) and the Ed Walkertrained Reroute (Acclamtion), who finished fifth in the
Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes just five days after she had made
a winning debut at York in a very fast time.
The Lennox Stakes is run over the specialist trip of
seven furlongs and has attracted a strong field of twelve,
of which the likely favourite is the Roger Varian-trained
Aljamaaheer (Dubawi), provided that the forecast rain
does not soften the ground too much before racing. He
gained reward for a string of good efforts in Gr.1 company
when winning the Gr.2 Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot last
time.
An intriguing runner in the race is Caspar Netscher
(Dutch Art), who has been purchased to back into training
by his former owner, Charles Wentworth, after proving
sub-fertile at stud. Wentworth has sent the four-year-old
to David Simcock instead of returning him to Alan McCabe
and he would have strong claims if back to the form he
showed when winning the Gr.2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen and
the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes last year.

GR.1 FLORIDA DERBY WINNER
TAKE CHARGE INDY RETIRED
Gr.1 winner and millionaire Take Charge Indy was retired
from racing yesterday after surgery to repair his left
foreleg resulting from an injury sustained in Sunday’s Gr.2
Monmouth Cup at Monmouth Park. The son of A P Indy
will stand at WinStar Farm for the 2014 breeding season.
“I was in the lead with a big smile on my face. He was
cruising. The only question was how much would he win
by,” said Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens after the race.
Immediately afterwards, the four-year-old colt was
shipped to nearby Hogan Equine. Dr Patty Hogan
successfully performed a 30-minute procedure on him
yesterday morning and he come out of the surgery in good
condition.
“It’s unbelievable how classy this horse is,” said Dr
Hogan. “The surgery went very well. He’s a super patient.”
A Graded Stakes horse at two, three, and four, Take
Charge Indy broke his maiden by six and a half lengths at
Arlington Park on his two-year-old debut. He followed up
that performance with a close second in the Gr.3
Washington Futurity, setting the stage for his three-yearold season. In a strong Gr.1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream

Padrino, Take Charge Indy wired the field and won the
Gr.1 Kentucky Derby prep race by a length. Earlier this
year, he took the Gr.2 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs,
posting a 109 Beyer Speed Figure.
“We purchased Take Charge Indy because of his gene
pool. Considering he might be the last great son of A P
Indy, his mother winning three Gr.1s, and he being a Gr.1
winner as well, we feel he has a tremendous chance at
stud,” said WinStar Farm President & CEO Elliott Walden.
“When I first went to see him, I thought I was looking at
A P Indy himself.”
Take Charge Indy is out of the three-time Gr.1 winner
and millionaire Take Charge Lady, making him a halfbrother to top three-year-old Will Take Charge, a favorite
for this year’s Gr.1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga. His stud fee
will be announced at a later date.

number of weight-for-age novices’, beginners’ and
maiden steeple chases would be reduced by up to 20%
and all horses going chasing would be required to have
run in at least one weight-for-age steeple chase prior to
running in a handicap chase.
The trial ran from 1st October 2012 until the conclusion
of the 2012/13 season, with the objective of addressing
the trend of declining field sizes in novices’ chases. The
trial achieved this objective, as novices’ chases produced
an average field size of 6.8, compared to 5.6 for the same
period the preceding year. In addition, races attracting
fewer than six runners were down from 62% to 43%.
As part of the 2012/13 trial, three additional £60,000
races were programmed, open to horses who ran in at
least two weight-for-age novices’ or beginners’ chases.
These races performed well and will remain in the
programme in 2013/14.
Ruth Quinn, Director of Racing for the BHA, said: “Overall
we were pleased with the results generated by the trial in
terms of field sizes and the competitiveness of races in this
category. The worrying trend towards increasingly smaller
fields in previous years needed to be addressed and the
trial was a positive first step in doing so.”
Throughout the trial the BHA were in communication
with representatives of the National Trainers Federation
(NTF) to discuss concerns raised by trainers. As a result of
this ongoing dialogue, recommendations for further
adjustments to the trial were agreed and presented to the
Board of the BHA by the Jump Racing Committee on 5th
June 2013. Those recommendations have now been
approved.
The main recommendation is an amendment to the Rule
that requires a horse to have one run over fences in a
weight-for-age chase before running in handicaps. Under
the revised rule a horse will now be required to have its
first start over fences in a weight-for-age steeple chase or
a novice chase of any description, including handicaps.
Ruth Quinn added: “The objective of the amendment to
the Rules is to build on the increased field sizes, which the
trial produced, while allowing more flexibility for trainers in
placing their first-time runners over fences.
In order to assist with the execution of this amendment,
a significant portion of the existing novices’ and
beginners’ chases will be converted to novices’ handicap
chases.
Rupert Arnold, chief executive of the National Trainers
Federation, said: “Before the trial of the new novices’
chases system began last October, trainers forecast
several problems caused by many horses being
uncompetitive when forced to have their first run in weight
for age races. The NTF coordinated extensive consultation
between trainers and the BHA Racing Department
throughout the trial and we are pleased that the changes
announced now reflect trainers’ comments.”

two, she won at Deauville from five outings and also
took third in the Listed Criterium de l’Ouest and the Prix
des Sablonnets. Last year, she won her first two starts,
the second of which came in the Listed Prix Volterra,
then finished third in the Gr.3 Prix Chloe, second in the
Gr.3 Prix de Psyche and captured the Gr.2 Prix de la
Nonette.
Bred by Kilfrush Stud, Dream Peace is a three-parts
sister to the Gr.1 French 2,000 Guineas runner-up and
sire Catcher In The Rye (by Dansili’s sire, Danehill),
and bred on very similar lines to black-type winning
Truly Mine (by another Danehill son, Rock Of
Gibraltar, out of a half-sister to Dream Peace). Their
dam, Truly A Dream, won the Gr.2 (then) E.P. Taylor
Stakes and the Gr.3 Prix de Royaumont. Truly a Dream
is out of French Group winner Truly Special, dam of
Wareed, a multiple Group winner who also took third in
the Gr.1 Ascot Gold Cup, and ancestress of several
other major winners, including the Gr.1 Prix Saint-Alary
heroine Cerulean Sky and Moonstone, a three-parts
sister to Dream Peace’s dam, who took the Gr.1 Irish
Oaks, and finished second in the English equivalent.
STARSTRUCK (2009 f. by Galileo – Agnetha by Big
Shuffle) overwhelmed a Churchill Downs allowance
field on her U.S. debut on the 1st May, but could only
finish third and then second in Allowance/Optional
Claiming events at the same track on her next two
starts, despite starting as odds-on favourite on both
occasions. Happily, she chose an opportune moment
to recapture winning form in the Gr.3 Matchmaker
Stakes at Monmouth Park, in which she scored by one
and a quarter lengthss.
Racing in her native Ireland, Starstruck made five
starts before breaking her maiden going 11 furlongs at
Dundalk. Her only other Irish outing saw her finish a
close fourth to Paene Magnus in the Listed Carlingford
Stakes at the same venue.
Bred by Mrs C L Weld, Starstruck is out of the Gr.3
King George Stakes heroine Agnetha, a sister to crack
German sprinter and successful sire Areion and to
stakes winner Anna Frid, and a half-sister to German
black-type scorers Apollinaris and Aristaios.
Third here after cutting out much of the pace was
MINAKSHI (2008 m. by Footstepsinthesand – Maria
de La Luz by Machiavellian). The five-year-old took
second in the Owsley Stakes on her US debut, which
came on 1st May, then finished third in the Gr.2
Sheepshead Bay Handicap and fourth in the Gr. 2 New
York Stakes. Previously the French-bred campained in
her native country, where she won four of 13 starts, and
on her final start last November took second in the
Listed Prix Isola Bella on her Stakes debut.
Bred by Elevage Haras de Bourgeauville, Minakshi is

IN DIANA STAKES
Dansili’s excellent season continued on Saturday as
his daughters LAUGHING (2008 m. by Dansili – Comic
by Be My Chief) and DREAM PEACE (2008 m. by
Dansili – Truly a Dream by Darshaan) delivered a onetwo in the Gr.1 Diana Stakes at Saratoga.
Laughing took the initiative from the start and held off
the determined challenge of her paternal half-sister by
a head. On her previous outing, she had emerged from
an eight-month absence to prevail by three-quarters of
a length in the Gr.3 Eatontown Handicap at Monmouth
Park on 29th June.
The five-year-old had proved progressive during her
time in Ireland, winning a maiden at Navan on her third
outing, before saying farewell to her homeland with a
tally in the Listed Nijinsky Stakes at Leopardstown. She
ran once in North America in 2011, finishing unplaced in
the Gr.1 E. P. Taylor Stakes. She enjoyed a productive
2012, with six starts bringing a wins in the Gr.3
Matchmaker Stakes and a one mile allowance at
Aqueduct, as well as finishing second in the Gr.3 Athenia
Stakes and Lady Baltimore Stakes and a third to the
formidable Zagora in the Gr. 3 Gallorette Handicap
Bred by Floors Farming and the Duke of Devonshire,
Laughing is half-sister to Hong Kong star Viva Pataca,
winner of the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Hong Kong
Derby, and two renewals of the Champions and Chater
Cup, which saw him twice be Horse of the Year in that
country. The dam is half-sister to Brave Act, winner of
the Gr.3 Solario Stakes in England and subsequently
successful in eight Graded Stakes events in the U.S.,
and to the Listed March Stakes victor Jellaby Askhir.
The grandam, Circus Hat, is a sister to the Stakes
winners Lady Shipley and Stakes winner Ellie
Ardensky and is out of Champion Two-Year-Old Filly
Circus Ring.
Dream Peace has been battling with some of the best
in her division since her second to the talented Winter
Memories in last year’s Gr.1 Diana Stakes, which
served as her US debut. She rounded off last year with
thirds in the Gr.1 Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes and to
another European, Siyouma, in the Gr.1 E.P. Taylor
Stakes.
She kicked off her 2013 campaign the Gr.3 Beaugay
Stakes at Belmont Park on 4th May and gained another
Graded Stakes credit with a third. Her only other outing
Stateside saw her take third in the Gr.2 New York

Hero of the Gr.3 San Franciso Mile Stakes on 27th
April, TIGAH (2008 h. by Dalakhani – Macina by Platini)
went to the sidelines until 24th July, when he
reappeared to take third in the Wickerr Stakes at Del

triumph, he had earned the first black-type of his career
with a third, beaten a head and half a length by Battle
Force and Fed Biz, in the Thunder Road Stakes,
having kicked off 2013 with a third to Irish-bred
Willyconker in an Allowance/Optional Claming test at
Santa Anita.
He made his US debut at Santa Anita in January
2012, finishing sixth in an Allowance/Optional Claiming
event, but rebounded to take an allowance event at the
same track in February. The five-year-old had only
started twice since then, taking a fourth in an allowance
race at Hollywood Park in April and finishing unplaced
in the the Gr. 2 American Handicap in May.
Bred by Newsells Park Stud, Tigah is a half-brother to
black-type placed Fat Choy Oolala, and to Royal
Punch, the dam of the Rockingham Stakes victrix
Royal Rascal. The dam, who was Group placed in
Germany, is out of three-time black-type scorer
Mamma’s Too, also dam of Group-placed The Loan
Express.
TO MY VALENTINE (2010 f. by Dyhim Diamond –
Lisselan Firefly by Monashee Mountain) began her US
career with a second in a Gulfstream Park
allowance/optional claiming event on 31st January.
Raised in class for her second outing, she stepped into
Stakes company for the seven and a half furlong Allen
LaCombe Memorial at Fair Grounds and missed out by
just a head. Unplaced in the Gr.3 Appalachian Stakes,
the three-year-old rebounded for a second in a
Churchill Downs allowance test on 15th June. She
returend to action in action over five and a half furlongs
at Saratoga on 26th July, when she kicked clear in the

To My Valentine started six times in her native France
last year. Successful in a maiden at Maisons-Laffite on
her debut, she went on to earn black type with a third
in the Listed Prix La Fleche and a second in the Gr.3
Prix du Bois before closing out her career with a
seventh in the Listed Prix de Vallee d’Auge. Bred by
S.A.R.L. Haras de Bouguelot, she is out of Lisselan
Firefly, a half-sister to the U.S. Stakes-placed filly
Cute Connie. The second dam, Fire West, is halfsister to US Stakes-placed runner Firey Ridge.
Luz. A winner in France and the US and black-type
placed in the provinces, Maria De La Luz is a half-sister
to to Happy Heart (the dam of Arapaho Miss, who
took the Gr.1 VRC Oaks in Australia), and to Flicker Of
Hope, the dam of Midas Touch, a multiple black-type
winner in Turkey. The grandam, Light Of Hope, is a
sister to the top-class sire Alzao.
WATSDACHANCES (2010 f. By Diamond Green –
High Finance by Entrepreneur) upset the locals in the
nine-furlong P G Johnson Stakes at Saratoga on her US
debut, which came on 29th August last year. She
stepped up on that effort in the Gr.3 Miss Grillo Stakes
at Belmont Park on 8th October, scoring by two and a
quarter lengths, then ended the year on a high by
chasing home subsequent Gr.1 French 1,000 Guineas
heroine Flotilla in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
Fourth, after a wide trip, in the Gr.3 Appalachian Stakes
on her reappearance this April, she improved to finish
third in the Gr.2 Sand Point Stakes on 27th May.
Tackling Graded Stakes opposition again in the Gr.2
Lake George Stakes on 24th July, the three-year-old
closed well from off the pace to take second behind
favourite Kitten’s Dumplings. Watsdachances started
just twice in her native Ireland, finishing third in a five
furlong maiden at Cork on her debut, then taking a
maiden at Navan over the same trip by six lengths.
Bred by P. G. Lyons, Watsdachances is out of High
Finance, a winning half-sister to the Gr.3 Nell Gwyn
Stakes victrix Reunion. The grandam, Phylella, was
black-type placed in France and the US. She is a sister
to Karman Gal, a European-bred who took the Zinnia
Stakes at Philadelphia Park and subsequently became
a good producer in New Zealand, where she appears
as dam of three Stakes winers, including the Gr.3
Doomben Classic Scorer, Galroof, grandam of Gorky
Park, a multiple black-type winner who also took
second in the Gr. 1 Victoria Derby, and third dam of
Planet Rock, successful in the Gr.1 New Zealand 1,000
Guineas.
A classic performer in her native Italy, GOOD KARMA
(2008 m. by Tobougg – Greedy Slewpy by Slewpy) was
not an instant hit in the US. She did take third in the
Middle Stage Stakes at Aqueduct on her debut, which
came in Novermber 2011, but was unplaced in three
outings last year. She reappeared off a 12-month
absence to finish unplaced in the Rendondo Beach
Stakes on 6th June, but a trip to Santa Rosa on Sunday
paid off with a victory in the Luther Burbank Handicap.
Racing in Italy, Good Karma won six of 11 starts,
including the Premio Ubaldo Pandolfi, and she also
took second in the Gr.2 Italian Oaks and third in the Gr.3
Italian 1,000 Guineas.
Bred by Soc Aga Al Deni SRL, Good Karma is a halfsister to Last Night Show, an Italian Listed winner,
who finished second in the Gr.3 Italian 1,000 Guineas.
Her dam, Greedy Slewpy, is a half-sister to Grease,
who captured six Group events in Italy and France,
including the Gr.1 Gran Criterium, and who

Following the publication of the Supplementary
Catalogue, DBS Managing Director Henry Beeby said:
“We are absolutely delighted with the number and quality
of supplementary entries that we have received for the
August sales. The original catalogue was 18 per cent
bigger than last year and, with the addition of these 38
extra horses, there is now far more on offer at the DBS
August Sales in 2013.
“We are also extremely excited to be offering for sale
such household names as For Non Stop and Sanctuaire
and we look forward to a lively two days of trading at
Doncaster next week.”

(370)
Teruya Yoshida was very happy on Sunday night after his
brave filly Elusive Kate won her fourth Gr.1 – and second
in a month – in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville yestereday.
Elusive Kate was the cherry on top of the cake for the
Yoshidas. Teruya and his brother Katsumi were the
breeders or owners of 13 of the 35 winners in Japan on
Sunday.
They also landed the most interesting races for
newcomers at Niigata. Katsumi Yoshida is the breeder of
Visby (Neo Universe), who opened her account over 1600
metres. The dark bay filly broke fast from stall 16 and set
an honest pace, saving the best for the finish. She scored
by three-parts of a length from the fast-finishing Just
Vehicle, who completed a 1-2 for sire Neo Universe.
Visby, a ¥12,600,000 purchase at JHRA Selected Foal
Sale by Tomio Ono, is the first foal out of Allwise (Mr
Greeley). Katsumi Yoshida went to $120,000 to buy her at
the 2004 Keeneland November Sale. Allwise had a solid
career, winning three races on dirt and finishing third in the
Gr.2 Kanto Oaks, earning more than ¥51 million. She is a
half-sister to three Stakes winners, including
Radharcnarraige (Distorted Humor), winner of the Gr.3
Ballyogan Stakes. The third dam Victorian Queen was a
Champion in Canada who proved her talent also in US,
finishing second in the Diana Handicap and in the Matron
Stakes, both Gr.2 then but now upgraded. Victorian Queen
produced three Group winners, headed by Judge
Angelucci, a triple Gr.1 scorer and sire. Allwise foaled a
filly by Stay Gold in February.
Teruya Yoshida is the breeder and owner of Lawine
(Zenno Rob Roy), who won the fillies’ event over 1400
metres. The race, run at a stronger pace, turned into a
protracted battle between Lawine and Aramasa
Kurofune (Kurofune), prominent all the way. In the last
stride Lawine pipped her rival and the pair finished five
lengths in front of the rest of the field.
Lawine is a full-sister to the four-year-old Ichiokuno
Hoshi, a multiple Group-placed filly over 1400 metres, and
Caramack (Danehill Dancer) has been placed nine
times and is rated 73 on the flat. He is a half-brother to the
Gr.2 winning Hatta Fort (371)
●
● Bright Abbey (Halling) has won on the flat and over
hurdles. He is rated 77 on the flat (372)
● Dumbarton (Danehill Dancer) has won on the flat and

Danandy (Cloudings) is the winner of a Bumper and a
Point-to-Point and won a maiden hurdle on his most
recent start (374)
●
● Priestley’s Reward (Whipper) has won three times on

● Kiwayu (Medicean) has won three times and is rated 88
on the flat. He is out of a full-sister to the Gr.1 winner
Milan (491)

produced a yearling full-brother to Hopetoun. Generous
Option is a half-sister to Court Masterpiece (Polish
Precedent), who won the Gr.1 Prix De La Foret and was
even better at six, when he defeated Soviet Song in the
Gr.1 Sussex Stakes.
Hush is out of the Japanese-bred Silent (Layman), an
elder full-sister to Layman, who won the Gr.3 Prix de
Cabourg by five lengths when trained by Andre Fabre and
ran second behind Divine Proportions in the Gr.1 Prix
Morny. Moved to Godolphin, Layman added another Gr.3
to his record and subsequently found a place at stud in
France. Silent, trained by Henry-Alex Pantall, was less
talented than Layman but won once and ran fourth at
Listed level. Silent foaled Youm Al Mizayin, a filly by
Cape Cross, bought for €130,000 at the 2008 Goffs Orby
Sale, who won once at three and was sent back to Japan
in foal to Dubai Destination. The result of that mating, a
colt named Dubai Sunrise, won once and Silent had
another one winner, the filly Speak Softly (Alkaased), a
dual scorer just a step below the Stakes level.
Swept Overboard (End Sweep) is a good sire of fast
juvenile. He was second in the sires’ standing for
individual juvenile winner in 2009 with 34 scorers, just two
less than the leader Kurofune. The 16-year-old grey
stallion, who stands for ¥700,000 at Breeders Stallion
Station, is well known for his good dirt performers but the
filly Belle Lumiere proved effective on turf, sprinting
home in the Sunday’s newcomers event over 1200 metres
at Kokura.
Belle Lumiere, a ¥19,000,000 purchase at Chiba Breeze
Up, is the best of three foals produced by the four-time
winner French Bikini (Sunday Silence), a mare from the
female line of the Champion Ma Biche.
Swept Overboard recorded his eleventh juvenile winner
(three of them in the JRA circuit) and is at the top of sire’s list.
a half-sister to Harbor Commando (Manhattan Cafe),
who won a couple of Stakes racec and ran fourth in the
Gr.1 Japanese St Leger won by Orfevre (Stay Gold). Their
dam Lady Ying (Kendor) was Listed placed in France, a
low standard for the Teruya’s top-class broodmare
portfolio.
The US-bred All Stay (Cape Cross), a $150.000
purchase by JS Company at Keeneland September Sale,
opened his account in the newcomers’ race over 1800
metres at Hakodate on Sunday. He set the pace and
stayed on well over Tsukuba Azuma (Stay Gold).
He is a half-brother to Arraignment (Include), who was
Gr.3 placed. His dam Flowerette (Victory Gallop) was
unraced but a good deal for a Japanese buyer. She is an
half-sister to Flower Alley (Distorted Humor), who won
the Gr.1 Travers Stakes, the Gr.2 Jim Dandy Stakes and
ran second in the Gr.1 Bredders’ Cup Classic. Flower Alley
sired I’ll Have Another, who won the Gr.1 Kentucky
Derby and started his stud career at Big Red Farm at
¥3,200,000. The second dam Princess Olivia (Lycius)
was a shrewd purchase by Shadai Farm at the 2005
Keeneland November Sale. A ten-year-old broodmare at
the time of the sale, Princess Olivia was in foal to an
unfashionable sire in Monashee Mountain. Teruya
Yoshida brought Princess Olivia to Japan and she was
bred to Symboli Kris S. The result of that mating was the
Gr.2-placed Blooming Alley, who landed four wins and
earned more than ¥86 million. Princess Olivia twice visited
Deep Impact and foaled two colts. The first is Tosen Ra,
who won the Gr.2 Kyoto Kinen and placed several times at
Gr.1 level for more than ¥286 million. The second is
Spielberg, a Stakes winner and multiple Group placed
who had a tilt at the Gr.1 Japanese Derby 2012.
Princess Oliva has failed to produce a foal since 2009
but her three previous runners combined earnings of more
than ¥422 million, around five times her price at the
Keeneland.
Bago (Nashwan) had his third juvenile winner this
season at Kokura. Kashino Talon led home a 1-2 for owner
Kashiwagi in a newcomers’ race over 1200 metres. She
had a perfect stalking trip and kicked on well to leave
Kashino Edel (Dandy Commando) two and half lengths
behind.
She is a half-sister to the three-year-old gelding
Kashino Runaway (Marvelous Sunday), who won twice
and ran in a couple of Group racess earlier this season.
Their dam, the decent dirt sprinter Kashino Escape
(Suzuka Street), recorded three wins in a five seasons
career and earned more than ¥55 million. Kashino Escape
has a yearling colt by Came Home.
The Australian sire Commands (Danehill), who was
shuttled to Japan in 2010 and 2011, recorded a double at
the weekend. On Saturday at Kokura, the filly Hush
relished the swtich from dirt to turf and outsprinted
Shigeru Kawachi (Daiwa Major) in a maiden over 1200m.
On Sunday at the same venue, in a similar race, the colt
Hopetoun finished fast to beat the filly Feb Nohea
(Johannesburg) over 1200 metres. Both juveniles were
bred by Darley Japan and ran for Sheikh Mohammed.
Hopetoun is out of Generous Option (Cadeaux
Genereux), who won twice in England for Maktoum Al
Maktoum and left Europe in 2007, leaving behind her the
unraced gelding Dune Grass (Green Desert). Generous
Option has two winners from two foals in Japan and
