Name Commas Comma, Comma, No Comma! Coordinate adjectives are adjectives that describe the same noun and are equal in importance. To determine if adjectives are coordinate adjectives, ask yourself these questions: Does the sentence make sense if you insert the word “and” between the adjectives? Does the sentence make sense if the adjectives are reversed? If the answer is yes, then they are coordinate adjectives. EXAMPLE: He was a thoughtful, reliable man. These are coordinate adjectives. The sentence still makes sense if you say, “He was a reliable, thoughtful man” or “He was a thoughtful and reliable man.” EXAMPLE: He had an old black dog. These are not coordinate adjectives. The sentence sounds awkward if you write, “He had an old and black dog” or “He had a black old dog.” DIRECTIONS: Decide which sentences below contain coordinate adjectives. Rewrite each sentence, adding commas where needed. ________________ 1. We watched a long boring movie. ________________ 2. The busy responsible students always get their work done. ________________ 3. The mighty old lion let out a roar. ________________ 4. They enjoyed the delightful surprising afternoon. ________________ 5. The boy rode a slow old horse. CCSS.L.7.2.A |© www.EnglishWorksheetsLand.com
